Bowlers squeeze Lancashire chase after Dawid Malan’s second successive half-century

There have been many wonderful Roses contests in the Blast, but perhaps for a truly momentous night there has never been one quite like this. Yorkshire, trying to rise above off-field difficulties, with one win since last August; Lancashire, with Jos Buttler added to their star-studded ranks. But it was Yorkshire, beaten eight times in the last 10 Roses encounters, who emerged against many expectations with a 15-run win. There was no immediate joy for Butter, who followed up an increasingly jaded IPL by falling second ball for 1.Victories change tournaments. Sometimes they change seasons. Is it hyperbole to wonder if this has saved a club? A club dicing with bankruptcy. A young side psychologically shaken by events beyond their control. But Yorkshire have summoned back-to-back wins against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and now in a Headingley Roses match, a result that few predicted on the most boisterous night on the Blast’s calendar. As the winless run became almost unbearable, Dawid Malan has come into his own with two match-winning performances: 95 at Trent Bridge, now Lancashire taken for 83 from 50 balls. When the going gets tough, and all that…Yorkshire’s 195 for 6 felt 15 or so under par, but they took early wickets and when Tom Hartley threatened to pull off a heist, Jordan Thompson and Matthew Revis provided nerveless contributions in the final overs that seemed beyond them a week ago. Thompson’s variations, with 60 needed from five, were at the height of his game, his confidence suddenly reborn.Related
Madsen century proves enough as Derbyshire edge thriller
Darren Gough, a director of cricket who has dared to take on the hardest job in the county game, had the guts to appear on with the game in the balance. “You learn from failure then suddenly you get to the point where it just clicks,” Gough said. It is far too early to suggest that it has, but it is a start. Lancashire remain far likelier to claim a top-four spot, but they have now lost two from two and will lack Saqib Mahmood for the foreseeable future with another as yet unspecified injury.”Ah wun’t be goin’,” a few Yorkshire old-timers would have been saying. Perhaps, instead, it was another vaguely slighted evening in front of ITV3 and a re-run of , where appropriately enough DI Vera Stanhope was “sifting evidence of grief, love and addiction.” They missed a treat.Despite deflating results on the field, and the crippling overspend and dubious decisions that marred Lord Kamlesh Patel’s time as chair and chief executive, Yorkshire, to their credit, have remained stoutly committed to a more diverse and inclusive future. The Roses match coincided with the announcement of a new LGBTQ+ supporters’ group – Yorkshire and Proud – which the club said it hopes “is an important step towards ensuring Headingley is a welcoming place for all.”If Adam Lyth made an initial batting statement for Yorkshire, taking four successive boundaries from Luke Wood’s first over, it was Malan who carried it forward. His timing was not always immaculate, but strength of body was allied to strength of character and his manipulation was precise. He has come to know the Headingley square, and as good a pitch as it was, he says that he tends to play squarer these days to combat a more tennis-ball bounce.Even as he took the third over, Lancashire’s captain, Liam Livingstone, must have wondered if his uncertain decision to bowl was wise. To make life tougher, several mishits fell short of him in the field. A catch was impossible, but the crowd took its chance to ridicule all the same. It was a bad night, too, for Wood, Lancashire’s leading wicket-taker, who conceded 55, a joint Lancashire record.By the time Malan took two steps down the pitch – not a regular sight – to deposit Matt Parkinson’s legspin into the Rugby Stand, Livingstone was not as much rotating his bowlers as running through the card. He found his solutions in unpredictable places: Luke Wells’ leg spin began to arrest Yorkshire’s charge; Colin de Grandhomme came up trumps with 3 for 24.
De Grandhomme broke the stand at 88 in the 10th over when Lyth fell to Hartley’s catch above his head tight to the midwicket boards. Lancashire’s fielding did not always survive the clamour. Parkinson dropped a sitter at short fine when Malan, on 63, was bemused by de Grandhomme’s modestly-paced bouncer, but Will Luxton fell next ball, his leg-side pick-up caught at the second attempt by Wood.Yorkshire shuffled a youthful order intelligently: individual growth demanded in a position best designed to achieve it. Shan Masood dropped himself to No. 5, an impressive self-assessment when big hittin g was needed by a captain who is bearing a heavy responsibility. He would have been run out first ball had Buttler’s shy at the bowler’s end struck the stumps. Masood became de Grandhomme’s third wicket, his flat pull to deep midwicket giving Hartley the chance to stand tall for a catch that again silenced the Western Terrace. That allowed Revis, who has the ability to go big, to make an unbeaten 24 from 16 balls. There was also the briefest of cameos from Thompson, pushed up to No. 6. This is a side getting to know itself, and that is necessary if it is to turn some of its weaknesses into strengths.Buttler’s presence in the Blast this season is an uplifting sight. So heavy have been England’s demands that he has managed only seven Blast matches in five years. This season alone with England’s white-ball season delayed until September, he can play double that. “I’m really looking to forward to getting stuck in,” he said. Not on this occasion. Dom Bess’ second ball, thrown wide of off stump, was slapped to mid-off.Yorkshire shifted the balance with four wickets in the first seven overs of Lancashire’s innings as they slipped to 64 for 4. A sellout crowd howled with incredulity. Wells had threatened to change the game in a trice with 20 from his first five balls, but Ben Mike had his best five minutes in a Yorkshire shirt, first causing Wells to hole out in the deep then holding Phil Salt’s return catch.Another display of note, rewarded by the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, caught at long-on, came from the willowy Jafer Chohan, who has arrived at Yorkshire via Loughborough University, the South Asian Cricket Academy and – lest it be forgotten – Yorkshire’s commitment to a more diverse future.
It has become commonly held that Chohan’s breakthrough came after Joe Root faced him in the England nets. That story has an international flavour and perhaps has some validity.Gough, trenchantly, burned to give his version. His son had been playing in Essex and was bamboozled by Chohan so, upon hearing this, Gough invited him for a trial. “I saw him for 10 minutes. Young man, I said, I will be sending you a contract in the next 24 hours.” A rival history, now duly implanted in the consciousness of the cricketing nation. Lovely stuff.
da luck: Juan Mata is a player who will always be fondly remembered at Manchester United for his time as a player, starring in the first team over an eight-year period.
da apostaganha: The Spaniard joined the Red Devils from Chelsea back in January 2014 for a reported £37.1m, a bargain given his impressive form for the club – going on to make over 275 appearances in the process.
Mata also scored 51 times for United, including a scissor kick against bitter rivals Liverpool which secured all three points and a rare victory at Anfield.
Juan Mata
He would eventually leave back in 2022, joining Turkish outfit Galatasaray on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams.
However, 11 years on from his big-money transfer to join the club, new boss Ruben Amorim has the opportunity to repeat such a deal in a move for one Premier League star.
Man Utd make contact to sign PL star this month
According to The Sportzine, Man United have made contact with the representatives of Chelsea star João Félix over a potential move to Old Trafford this month.
The Portuguese only moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer, joining the Blues for a fee in the region of £46m with Conor Gallagher moving in the opposite direction as a result.
However, it’s not been plain sailing for the 25-year-old since his big-money transfer, starting just three times in the Premier League, potentially opening the door to an early departure this month.
The report claims that he would be allowed to depart the capital this month if an acceptable offer was presented their way, but fails to mention what fee Enzo Maresca’s side would demand for his services.
Felix would certainly be a superb addition to Amorim’s side, bolstering his compatriot’s chances of being a success in Manchester, whilst also being their own version of a player who’s seriously in demand this month.
Why Joao Felix could be Man United’s own Matheus Cunha
Matheus Cunha has been a man in serious demand this month, unsurprisingly so given his form for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League throughout 2024/25.
The Brazilian has scored ten goals and registered four assists in his 21 outings to date, with Arsenal and Nottingham Forest two of the sides interested in a move for his signature.
The 25-year-old has also previously been on the radar of United in recent weeks, but their interest appears to have cooled with other targets such as Felix popping up in the meantime.
Cunha’s record in the top flight would undoubtedly give supporters another reason to crave his signing, but despite his lack of minutes to date, the Chelsea ace has managed to outperform him in numerous key areas – leading to FBref dubbing the former Atlético star as a similar player to the Brazilian.

Felix, who’s previously been dubbed “world-class” by former England international Glen Johnson, may have managed fewer combined goals and assists, but has produced more progressive carries and passes per 90 to date – showcasing his attacking prowess this season despite his lack of minutes.
He’s also managed to achieve a higher pass completion rate, along with more completed take-ons per 90, highlighting his ability to create opportunities within the final third.
His lack of game time at Chelsea since his move could allow the Red Devils to get themselves a hugely talented player for a fraction of the price this month, supercharging Amorim’s ambitions at the club in the process.
Whilst it’s unclear how much any deal would cost the hierarchy this month, he’s showcased that even with limited minutes, he’s capable of starring, potentially holding the key to transforming their fortunes in the coming months.

Career-best 229 not out revives Nottinghamshire after three days of being second-best

Joe Clarke turned his first red-ball century for 21 months into a maiden double-hundred as Nottinghamshire denied Warwickshire victory in an LV= Insurance County Championship match that the visitors had dominated for the first three days. Thanks to Clarke’s marathon unbeaten 229, spanning eight hours and 38 minutes, Nottinghamshire clawed back a deficit of 416 on first innings after following on to deal a blow to Warwickshire’s title ambitions. The Bears move above Hampshire and Essex to go second in the Division One table with the 12 points they take from the draw but have ground to make up on defending champions Surrey, whose extraordinary win over Kent at Canterbury gives them a 32-point lead, albeit from seven matches to Warwickshire’s six.Clarke was dropped at slip on 128 in the morning session – a difficult chance though one that needed to be taken on a slow, flat track where opportunities for the bowlers were in short supply. There were not many errors otherwise from the former England Lions player, who hit 35 fours and a six from 365 balls faced.Chris Rushworth led the Warwickshire attack manfully, taking three for 73, with Hasan Ali two for 68 but the resolve shown by Nottinghamshire’s lower-order batters in occupying the crease in support of Clarke was crucial.Clarke, whose 12 first-class hundreds in his first three seasons at Worcestershire earmarked him as a future star, has struggled for consistency since moving to Trent Bridge. He posted three centuries in his first season in 2019 but only three more in 55 innings since then but there was no doubting his quality on this occasion.Having resumed with a deficit of 149 and the second new ball available two overs into the final morning, Nottinghamshire knew that if they could emerge from the opening session without sustaining too much damage, their chances of seeing out a draw would rise appreciably. With the help of that one important slice of luck for Clarke, they achieved their objective, reaching lunch with just one casualty and Warwickshire’s advantage down to 75. The one man out was Steven Mullaney, the Nottinghamshire skipper, who was bowled offering no shot as Rushworth, the country’s leading wicket-taker, found rare deviation off the pitch in the 10th over with the new ball, which zipped back to hit off stump. The fifth-wicket stand had matched the fourth in adding exactly 100 runs, Mullaney having batted for more than two hours for his 48 runs. The Clarke let-off came three overs later, the batter slashing at one outside off stump from Will Rhodes in a moment of vulnerability out of character with the rest of his innings. To be fair to Rob Yates, who missed the chance at slip, the ball came off the edge at head height with enough momentum to reach the boundary even after passing through his hands to his right. Nonetheless, Nottinghamshire would have been six-down for 292 had it stuck, so it felt like a big moment.Unruffled, Clarke took two off the next ball to go past his previous best for Nottinghamshire (133), before restoring his equilibrium with another classically executed straight drive for four. He swept Danny Briggs for the first six of his innings and was on 166 from 341 for five at lunch. Warwickshire, having come up with a game-plan overnight to take the six remaining wickets in two sessions, were already significantly behind schedule.Rushworth made things happen again after the interval, bowling Tom Moores with a ball that perhaps kept a tad low. At 361 for six, the home side were still 55 behind, with Warwickshire now sensing an opportunity. But Clarke found another resolute partner in Calvin Harrison, who was playing in only his second Championship match yet was unfazed even as Warwickshire at times brought every fielder close in.It was with thanks to Harrison keeping his nerve as solidly as Moores and Mullaney before him that Clarke was able to bide his time, sweeping his 318th ball faced to the boundary off Danny Briggs to go to 203, a moment that saw sustained applause from the home team balcony but at first a mere tap of the gloves between the seventh-wicket pair before Clarke, determined to see the job through to the end, briefly raised his bat in acknowledgement of the spectators.Nottinghamshire moved into the lead for the first time in the match shortly afterwards and were 20 in front at tea with 36 overs to play, still time for Warwickshire to seal a win if they could break the seventh-wicket partnership soon afterwards.Yet another important chance was missed, with the lead just 40 and 30 overs remaining, when Harrison, on 33, miscued a pull against Rushworth but was dropped on the long leg boundary by Olly Hannon-Dalby, and it was enough for Warwickshire skipper Will Rhodes to offer his handshake on a draw at 5pm, Harrison finishing on 38 not out having helped add 103 runs in two hours and 19 minutes at the crease.

Everton looking for additional firepower
da winzada777: Heading into the January transfer window, it was clear that Everton needed attacking reinforcements. The Merseyside outfit had managed just 15 goals in the Premier League prior to Sean Dyche’s departure, the second lowest of any side in the division.
As a result, they languish just above the relegation zone, with no player in their ranks having managed to find the net more than three times, an achievement shared by Dwight McNeil and Iliman N’Diaye.

And there is concern over the current options to lead the line, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin out of contract at the end of the campaign and having been linked with clubs across Europe, while Italian media has continuously suggested that clubs in Serie A are desperately trying to sign Beto after he struggled to make an impact at Goodison Park.
As a result, a striker is needed this winter, and Everton have reportedly held talks with Tom Cannon over a potential return to the club that he left in search of first team football.
However, that deal is deemed “unlikely”, with Cannon more likely to return to the Championship as things stand after a successful loan spell with Stoke City. As a result, Everton have been forced to look elsewhere, and have now made contact over a potential loan signing until the end of the season.
Everton approach Brighton for Ferguson loan
Now, TBR football report that Everton have made contact with Brighton over a move to take out-of-favour forward Evan Ferguson on loan for the remainder of the campaign. The Republic of Ireland striker has barely featured for Fabian Hurzeler in the first half of the campaign, starting just twice and finding the net on just one occasion.
Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates
However, he is undoubtedly a solid player, with Football Analyst EBL on X dubbing the 20-year-old “the next big thing at centre forward” on account of him being “lightning quick” as well as having “ferocious ball-striking”.
Quizzed on Ferguson’s potential destinations this winter, Hurzeler refused to rule out a move to a fellow Premier League side, explaining: “This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club. It’s more about what is best for the player.”
Now, TBR report that Seagulls chairman Tony Bloom has fielded loan enquiries from a host of Premier League sides chasing his signature, but that Brighton are “yet to green-light any talks” involving their potential future star.
Everton pushing to sign £83m "machine" with "sky high potential" this month
The Toffees are keen on signing a midfielder.
ByDominic Lund Jan 15, 2025
One advantage that Everton could have is that Brighton are unwilling to discuss a permanent deal, instead looking for a loan where the Irishman can play regularly, something that a move to Goodison Park would definitely offer.
Any move would require some movement at Goodison Park, with Everton already having two loanees at the club in the shape of Jack Harrison and Armando Broja and Premier League rules not permitting them to add a third unless one of those deals was either terminated or made permanent.

Washington Sundar played seven matches for Sunrisers this season•BCCI
Washington Sundar, the Sunrisers Hyderabad allrounder, will play no further part in the ongoing IPL season due to a hamstring injury, the franchise confirmed on Thursday.Washington played seven matches for Sunrisers this season, scoring 60 runs from five innings and taking three wickets overall, with his team currently in ninth place on the table. This is Washington’s third straight injury-interrupted season in the IPL. In 2021, Washington was ruled out of the UAE leg of the tournament due to a finger injury, after he had picked up three wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first half of the season.Washington’s luck wouldn’t get any better, as he was then forced to miss the ODI leg of India’s tour of South Africa in January 2022 after testing positive for Covid-19, while a hamstring injury kept him out of the three-match T20I series at home against West Indies.During IPL 2022, Washington, having been signed by Sunrisers, missed four games due to a split webbing in his bowling hand. Last August, Washington injured his left shoulder while fielding for Lancashire during a county stint, and subsequently was ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.
