Newcastle hold talks to hijack West Ham deal to sign "serious" £33m star

da 888casino: Still looking to land just their second major arrival of the summer transfer window, Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has reportedly held talks to hijack West Ham United's £33m move.

Newcastle transfer news

da gbg bet: The Magpies have endured a disappointing summer so far. Having complied with PSR rules by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, it may have been assumed that Newcastle would splash the cash this summer, but that's not been the case.

Imagine him & Guimaraes: Newcastle can forget Gnabry by signing £50m ace

The talent has certainly impressed in the Premier League this season.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 18, 2024

Since signing Lloyd Kelly on a free deal at the start of the summer, those at St James' Park have only managed to welcome John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos in two deals that were never going to steal the headlines.

The rumours have, therefore, been arriving in their numbers as Newcastle fans wait for further reinforcements. The likes of Adrien Rabiot and Raphinha in two moves that would undoubtedly salvage a summer to otherwise forget, but it may well be another defensive addition who steals the spotlight in the next month or so.

raphinha-newcastle-united-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Mitchell has held talks with Jean-Clair Tobido's representatives as Newcastle look to hijack West Ham's move to sign the OGC Nice defender. The Hammers reportedly reached an agreement with the French club worth €40m (£33m) in a deal that would see the centre-back arrive on an initial loan, but could now see Newcastle steal in ahead to complete a move as they have yet to convince the player to move to London.

It would be quite the twist if those at St James' Park managed to land Todibo, especially with Juventus also involved, but it remains to be seen whether the Frenchman will pick the Premier League over the Serie A this summer.

Newcastle should go all out for "serious" Todibo

Following ACL injuries to both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle cannot risk going into next season without the addition of another central defender to join Kelly. And if they can complete their hijack of Todibo, then Eddie Howe will have himself the perfect solution at the heart of his backline. Still just 24 years old, it's no surprise that the OGC Nice star has attracted so much interest this summer.

Amid links to West Ham, Juventus and now Newcastle, Nice manager Franck Haise recently spoke about Todibo's future at the club, saying via Tribal Football: "There are many opportunities for many players. For reasons you know, the market hasn't really taken off yet.

"I work with the players I have available. I am fully aware that in 15 days or a month there will be players who have come and gone. Currently, Jean-Clair is working well, he is very serious. He had a good half (training match against Lausanne). I have no problem playing him because he might stay in Nice, we don't know."

Beth Mooney: Anyone in the Australia team can win us a game from anywhere

The left hander admitted she thought the team “were gone for all money” after early wickets

Beth Mooney reckons that Australia will attack the ODI World Cup with belief that anybody can help them win from any position, having produced a career-best knock to snatch a stunning victory over India in Mackay.Mooney, promoted to open in the injury-enforced absence of Rachael Haynes, finished 125 not out as her side rallied from 52 for 4 to reel in Friday’s victory target of 275.It was Australia’s 26th straight win in the format but none of those games have matched the drama of the latest, which had seemingly ended as India celebrated victory only for the final delivery to be judged a no-ball by the third umpire for being too high. The multi-format series continues with a third and final ODI on Sunday but the ODI World Cup, which is being hosted by New Zealand and starts in March, looms large for the rivals.Related

The final ball that wasn't: the story of a chaotically memorable finish

Mooney, who was dropped on 1 and admitted she thought Australia “were gone for all money” after their top-order collapse, feels the remarkable fightback reflects how far her side have come since the 2017 World Cup.Australia stumbled at the semi-final stage of that tournament, when India set them an imposing target of 282 in 42 overs.”That’s going to give us a huge boost, especially leading into that World Cup,” Mooney said. “We’ve been in that situation before against India, obviously in that 2017 semi, and they’re a world-class side.”To be composed the whole way through that innings with someone like Tahlia [McGrath], who hasn’t played a lot of international cricket, shows the gains we’ve made in domestic cricket.”And the importance of getting [new] people in this squad, involved in games and exposed to these kind of series. It’s pretty remarkable we came back from that to win…that will give us a huge amount of belief that pretty much anybody in this team can win us a game from anywhere.”Mooney formed key partnerships with McGrath, who scored 74, and Nicola Carey, who finished 39 not out, to secure victory.”I hope I can still get better. I was a bit annoyed at myself at the start,” Mooney said, lamenting her role in Ellyse Perry’s run out.Mooney, who was named player of the tournament at last year’s T20 World Cup then collected the Belinda Clark award as Australia’s best women’s international cricketer earlier this year, deflected praise to McGrath who also snared three wickets during a vital spell, exhibiting great composure and skill.”We just keep churning out these players who come out on the big stage and look like they’ve been there for years,” Mooney said.

He’s like Saka: Arsenal devise new plan to land £49m "level raiser"

da supremo: After a quiet first month that could be excused due to the Euros and Copa América, Arsenal have continued to be unusually subdued in the transfer window over the last week.

da bwin: Aside from making David Raya's deal permanent, the Premier League runners-up have done nothing to impact the first team, and if they want to go one better next year, they'll need to get moving.

The good news is that Edu Gaspar and Co have been at work looking for the right players, and based on recent reports, they've got a new plan to land one of their primary targets, a star who's won comparisons to the North Londoners' own starboy, Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao and have devised a new plan to bring him to North London.

The report claims that while the winger himself would favour a move to La Liga giants Barcelona, who are also incredibly keen to secure his services, the Gunners fully intend to make their move should the Catalan club's financial situation hinder them from paying the player's €58m – £49m – release clause and completing the deal.

Should Arsenal get their way, it would still represent a significant investment in a 22-year-old star, but given his recent performances and a complimentary comparison to Saka, it's one worth making.

Why Williams would be a great signing and his comparison to Saka

So, the first thing to examine here is the comparison between Williams and Saka, which stems from FBref.

Bukayo Saka for England

They compared players in similar positions at this year's Euros and then created a list of the ten most comparable players for each position. In this case, they concluded that the Englishman was the ninth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spanish star.

The easiest way to see these similarities is by looking at the underlying metrics in which they ranked most closely, such as progressive passes and passes received, passing accuracy, live passes, goal-creating actions, blocks and aerial duels won, all per 90.

However, it's not just his similarity to Saka that makes the young winger such a "level-raiser," as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, but also his output.

For example, in just 37 appearances last season, the Pamplona-born phenom scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.37 games for the Basque club – incredible.

He also played a pivotal role in the team's Copa del Rey triumph and then did the same for La Roja at the Euros this summer, scoring twice – including in the final – and providing one assist in six appearances.

Ultimately, while it might be a long shot given Barcelona's interest, Arsenal are correct not to give up on signing Williams this summer. His outrageously impressive performances over the last year or so and comparison to Saka are all evidence of his immense quality.

Tom Haines, Ben Brown lead with bat in hand as Sussex enjoy fruitful day

Unbeaten century for former skipper as Leicetershire bowlers struggle for impact

ECB Reporters' Network12-Sep-2021

Ben Brown made an unbeaten hundred•Getty Images

Captains past and present were amongst the runs as Sussex built towards an impressive first-innings score in their LV Insurance County Championship fixture against Leicestershire at the UptonSteel County Ground.Current skipper Tom Haines led the way in the first half of the day, hitting ten fours in scoring 71 off 113 balls, before Ben Brown, who was relieved of the captaincy earlier this season, followed up with an unbeaten century before bad light ended play seven overs early. With many members of the squad remaining at Hove to prepare for Saturday’s T20 Finals Day, Sussex named a team including five teenagers and two 20-year-olds, which included a debut for 18-year-old Tom Hinley. In the circumstances it was a good toss for Haines to have won, and the opener had no hesitation in batting first on a pale, dry-looking pitch. The decision was quickly justified, the only movement obtained by the Leicestershire seamers being through the air, and both Haines and opening partner Ali Orr took full advantage of the fast outfield, raising the 50 in the 11th over.Haines hit eight fours in going to his fifty off just 66 balls, and Orr looked set to join him until on 40, he hooked a Chris Wright bouncer down to long leg where Ed Barnes, running along the boundary, took a brilliant one-handed catch diving to his left.Leicestershire should have picked up a second wicket before lunch when Brown inside-edged a delivery from Barnes, but Foxes wicketkeeper Harry Swindells failed to hold the ball diving to his left. It was to prove a hugely expensive miss.Haines’ disappointment when he steered a widish delivery from Ben Mike into the hands of Geroge Rhodes at backward point was understandable, and soon afterwards Fynn Hudson-Prentice was forced to retired hurt after being hit on the hand by Abi Sakande. But Brown found solid support from Oli Carter, the pair adding 106 for the third wicket before Leicestershire took the new ball and former Sussex seamer Sakande bowled Carter with a delivery that came back to hit the top of off stump. The out-of-form Delray Rawlins nicked a catch behind off Wright, but Brown, who went to his century off 165 balls, remained undefeated at the close.

Porém, a arbitragem interveio apontando impedimento do camisa 9 do Jaconero.

Dhananjaya de Silva on batting long: 'This is what I'm meant to do for the team'

He trusted his lower-order team-mates to play big shots if he took the game deep

Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Jul-20213:02

Muralidaran: Karunaratne’s six off Bhuvneshwar changed the match

Bat long and take the game deep. These were the things Dhananjaya de Silva was telling himself during his match-winning 40 not out off 34 balls on Wednesday when he helped deliver Sri Lanka’s first T20I victory in six matches. Not known for his hitting capability, the match situation was perhaps made for de Silva, who struck only two boundaries – a six and a four – and focused instead on running singles and twos. With a severely depleted India making only 132, Sri Lanka did not require huge fireworks with the bat to chase it down.”This is what I’m meant to do for the team,” de Silva said after the match. “In the previous match as well, what I’d been told was to bat 20 overs from one side. I wasn’t able to do that in the previous game. Today was my day and I did that. If I can bat at a run-a-ball until the final overs, letting others attack around me, I can raise my strike rate towards the finish as well. That was the coach, captain and selectors’ plan.”Related

de Silva said the surface for this match was the slowest of the tour. It took a significant turn right through the game, with spinners picking up seven of the 11 wickets to fall. Only three sixes were struck in the entire match.”We knew it was a slow pitch, so our target while bowling was to restrict them to 125 or 130,” he said. “Our bowlers did well and we were able to manage that. When it came to our innings, we knew that it would be tough to bat as well, but if we dragged the game out to the 20th over, the equation becomes simple and we know what we have to do. I think even a T20 match, that’s the way to do it.”Despite de Silva’s innings, Sri Lanka’s chase was far from straightforward. They had actually been behind the DLS par score when rain arrived at the end of the 18th over, raising the possibility of the teams going off the field. In the end, the rain ceased quickly and the match continued with only a minor delay, but it required a six from the bat of Chamika Karunaratne in the 19th over to swing the game Sri Lanka’s way again. de Silva, though, said he trusted his lower-order team-mates.”We know that in the last four or five batters we have a few that can hit a six. Chamika, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana and even Dushmantha Chameera can hit a big shot. What I’d wanted to do was to take the game deep, thinking that Wanindu or Chamika would be there with me to finish it off. Thankfully, Chamika was there at the end.”
