PSV now plotting along with Liverpool talent’s agent to drive price down

da fazobetai: With Michael Edwards known for maximising the value of unwanted players in the transfer market, the Reds transfer chief could be beaten at his own game by the agent of a Liverpool talent.

Reds set for summer rebuild under Slot

da roleta: The latest news out of Anfield surrounds the future of some of the clubs' out of favour stars. Whilst the summer window is still in its early days, the Reds have already been able to shift some deadwood with Thiago, Adrian and Joel Matip all leaving the club upon the expiration of their respective contracts.

Liverpool favourites to sign “world-class” £25m star who's like Rodri

The Anfield side have the advantage in the race for this high-class midfielder.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 2, 2024

With a few hefty wage packets off the books, Edwards and Co look set to open the Reds' chequebook and bolster Arne Slot's squad. Anthony Gordon has been the main name doing the rounds on Merseyside with the former Everton winger linked with a move to Anfield.

The Boyhood Liverpool fan has been valued at £75 million by his current club Newcastle, after providing 21 goal contributions for the Magpies last term.

Newcastle player Anthony Gordon

With the funds to sign the likes of Gordon likely to be provided by further player sales, it now appears that one player's agent is set to make life difficult for the Reds this summer.

Liverpool talent set for exit this summer

As reported by Sport Witness, the local press in Eindhoven are claiming that PSV have identified Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg as a target for this summer. The report states that the club view the Reds centre back as the perfect replacement for André Ramalho, who is set to depart PSV during the window.

Van den Berg has been linked with a number of clubs so far this summer including Mainz 05, where the young defender spent last season on loan. Southampton were also said to be in for the 22-year-old, however this interest may have cooled following the arrival of Taylor Harwood-Bellis on a permanent deal.

Sepp van den Berg.

The report by Sport Witness claims that Liverpool want £15 million for the player, a fee that PSV are reportedly not willing to match. This dispute over a transfer fee is where the Dutch champions' links to van den Berg's agent come into play.

Last summer, Jerdy Schouten joined PSV from Serie A outfit Bologna in a move that saw Schouten's agent, Frank Schouten play a key role. Frank declared that Jerdy only wanted to sign for PSV despite interest from numerous clubs, forcing the selling club to bring their price down.

As Frank Schouten also represents van den Berg, the agent and PSV will try and repeat his trick this summer and force Liverpool to sell the young defender for a bargain price despite interest from across Europe.

Sepp van den Berg in action for Premier League club Liverpool.

With Edwards synonymous with making money off unwanted players in order to fund new signings, this move by van den Berg's agent will be sure to frustrate the Reds transfer guru.

Whilst the aim has always been for Liverpool to offload van den Berg this summer, it will not sit well with the higher ups at Anfield if the player's representatives engineer a move away for a cut-rate price.

Birmingham could sign perfect Miyoshi partner in swoop for deadly forward

da pinup bet: Birmingham City will be looking to romp home to the League One title next season if they can, flexing their millions in the transfer kitty to make the lowly division feel like a stroll in the park to get out of.

da dobrowin: Of course, there's plenty of risk involved in buying players for extortionate fees, with the possibility that these expensive buys become high-profile duds, but it's how the powers that be at St. Andrew's want to operate.

This will only increase the pressure on Chris Davies' shoulders to be the manager to seal an instant promotion, therefore, after walking away from the comforts of Tottenham Hotspur to join the Blues, but he will surely calm down and realise he can be the boss to pull off such a feat, if this deadly striker joins soon.

Birmingham ambitiously looking at £7m-rated striker

Football journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, has previously reported that the new League One outfit are eyeing up an ambitious swoop of Aberdeen centre-forward Bojan Miovski this summer, despite his extortionate price-tag.

The £7m price-tag slapped above the on-fire Macedonian's head will surely be too high for Birmingham to afford, you imagine, with interest from Serie A club Bologna sticking out as a more realistic next onward destination for the in-demand 25-year-old, over the relegated Blues.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

Yet, it has been rumoured that Birmingham will have plenty of money in the bank to bounce straight back up to the Championship, with Nixon further revealing recently that Davies will have a jaw-dropping £20m to play with potentially, which could see Mivoski's signature become suddenly financially viable.

What Mivoski could offer Birmingham

The Aberdeen number nine has the potential to rip League One to shreds if he does leave Scotland behind for St. Andrew's, with the prospect of him even linking up with breakout Blues star Koji Miyoshi to devastating effect, as third-tier defences struggle to keep the might of Birmingham's blistering attack at bay.

Labelled as being a "complete" forward player by football reporter Josh Bunting last season, when firing in goal after goal up at Pittodrie, Birmingham would have, arguably, the best finisher in the division at their disposal in Mivoski if he was to sign on the dotted line, who would also be an excellent Jay Stansfield replacement.

Mivoski would bag 26 goals from 53 games in all competitions throughout 2023/24, with two of those strikes even coming in the Europa Conference League for his Scottish employers.

Taking into account just the Macedonian striker's league strikes for Aberdeen, when looking at the table above, the potent 25-year-old would still be a golden addition to Davies' camp, with the Blues lacking a clinical goalscorer over the past few uninspiring seasons.

Mivoski's game could, arguably, be taken to a new level slotting into the Birmingham side alongside Miyoshi, who helped himself to seven goals and six assists in the Championship himself as a cool finisher, but also as a creative force for his relegated outfit.

Capable of playing anywhere across the attacking positions to complement the striker, with adaptability present in his game to play as a central attacking midfielder alongside bombing down the flanks, the "intelligent" Japanese gem – as he was described by ex-Blues boss Tony Mowbray – could be a joy to watch dropping down a division.

He will be another Birmingham star looking to make League One his playground next campaign, on the way to an instant promotion success being secured.

Mivoski really is a terrifying prospect to think about in the English third-tier, but this signing could soon become a reality, as Birmingham look to send out a statement to their new division.

Finals pressure for South Africa in T20Is decider

They have lost eight out of the 10 T20I deciders

Firdose Moonda02-Jul-2021

Can South Africa cross the finals hurdle?•AFP/Getty Images

Big picture A grand finale will close the first series of West Indies’ home summer and they will be itching for silverware, especially after losing the Test series 2-0. West Indies have held the lead, then fallen behind and then drawn level to lock this five-match series at 2-2, and create the kind of pressure South African teams (and their opposition) dream of.South Africa have lost eight out of the 10 deciders they have played in, only beating New Zealand home and away in 2012. Can they take a turn for the better here? There’s another reason why this finale is important for the visitors: they are on a five-series losing streak in the format. With just two series left to play (in Ireland and Sri Lanka( before the T20 World Cup this October, they need to find form. There are still a lot of eyes on Mark Boucher and his management team following their limited success over the 20 months they’ve been in charge. Though one result isn’t going to change things drastically, a trophy will make a big difference.Win or lose, South Africa will still have combination concerns, especially around the length of their batting line-up and the composition of their attack. Their specialist-heavily XI has left them short in both departments and they may have to cast the net wider to the allrounders.West Indies do not tend to place as much weight on bilateral series, because they often only have their best players all available for major tournaments. This time around, though, they’re near full-strength. The superstars have come out and shone to a degree but West Indies will know if they can get all the heavyweights firing together, they will have the makings of a side that could dominate any opposition. This will also be Grenada’s last hurrah of the international season and it has shown itself to be an excellent venue of the format after hosting just one T20I before this series. The pitches have been fairly challenging for batters, with good bounce on offer and slightly tacky surfaces, and have suited bowlers who have been able to adjust to taking pace off the ball while the spinners have prospered. Given that T20I cricket is a game of adaptability, St George’s has provided an interesting test of skill.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first) West Indies WLLWW
South Africa LWWLL
In the spotlight Talk of the West Indies’ veterans often centre around Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo but Fidel Edwards merits to be in the same category. Edwards is 39 and has made his comeback after six years as a Kolpak exile (South Africa, are you watching?) and got particular praise from Bravo for opening the bowling with an “aggression that has sometimes been missing.” Edwards only bowled two overs, and they were fairly expensive, and it’s too early to tell exactly how much he will add to the West Indian pack but with experience in England, the ability to swing the ball and longevity on his side, he is definitely one to watch.South Africa have anointed David Miller as their finisher, a job captain Temba Bavuma says the left-hander has done “for many years,” though the current numbers do not reflect that. Miller has scored 34 runs in four innings in this series and that is not for lack of time in the middle. Miller has been in in the 11th over twice, and in the 15th over once and has been out going for the big shot on each occasion. What’s evident is that Miller knows he needs to clear the boundary but he has only managed one six in the series so far and South Africa will want plenty more. Can David Miller turn around an ordinary series?•Getty Images

Team news
The lengthening of the batting line-up through the inclusion of both Chris Gayle and Shimron Hetmyer worked well for West Indies, so they may choose to go that way again, at the expense of Jason Holder, who was not in the 13 named for this game. Left-arm spinner Fabian Allen is unavailable after injuring his shoulder on Thursday, which could hand Akeal Hosein a debut. West Indies have also included left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell in the 13, for the first time in the series.West Indies (probable): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Evin Lewis3 Chris Gayle, 4 Shimron Hetmyer, 5 Kieron Pollard (capt), 6 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Akeal Hosein 10 Fidel Edwards 11 Obed McCoySouth Africa will likely want to give Aiden Markram another opportunity in the middle-order. They also seem comfortable with him as the sixth-bowling option, which could mean no opportunity for Kyle Verreynne on this tour. Lizaad Williams may get luckier, especially if Anrich Nortje does not recover from bruising on his left knee in time to play this match. Even if Nortje does, Williams may displace Lungi Ngidi, who has been expensive thus far. Sisanda Magala, who may have come into contention, has an ankle niggle and is unavailable for selection.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Aiden Markram, 6 David Miller, 7 George Linde, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Anrich Nortje/Lizaad Williams, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiPitch and conditions Tropical storm Elsa brought rain to Grenada for parts of Thursday and Friday and may linger into Saturday but the forecast for the afternoon looks relatively clear. There’s a small chance – under 25% – of rain during the match. Heavy showers may weigh the outfield down and could also affect the pace of the pitch. Markram said he noticed the wicket had slowed up a bit in the fourth match after the previous three games.Stats and trivia Both teams’ opening pairs have done reasonably well in this series, with West Indies’ top two averaging 49.50 and South Africa 39.00, but their middle orders have struggled. West India No.3-7 average 19.35 and South Africa’s 14.47. Chris Gayle is 57 runs away from 14,000 in T20 cricket. If Lungi Ngidi concedes another 35 runs, he will become the first bowler in T20Is to concede 200 runs in a bilateral series.Quotes “We had a long discussion last night about what it means to represent West Indies, what it means to be two-time World Champions and to keep playing the game with passion and pride.”
Dwayne Bravo reveals how West Indies dug deep to mentally prepare themselves for levelling the series 2-all in the fourth match. “The way we lost the game wasn’t about us batting first or second. From a bowling front, we conceded a 20-runs in the first over and upfront, that puts you under pressure and then to finish off the bowling innings like that – it doesn’t matter if you are bowling first or second. And then batters didn’t pitch up.”
Temba Bavuma is not convinced there is an advantage to setting a target or chasing in this series and was critical of his team’s overall performance in the fourth match.

Cheguei “Textor, Textor…”. Falei “I love John, I have a gift to you” (“Eu te amo John, tenho um presente para você”).

Alex Hales the solo gunslinger as stunning century overwhelms Lancashire

Opener’s fifth T20 hundred continues formidable run of form as Notts pull clear at the top

Alex Hales’ formidable form continues for Nottinghamshire•Getty Images

Nottinghamshire 173 for 6 (Hales 101*) beat Lancashire 166 for 6 (Croft 41, Carter 3-17) by seven runs
Alex Hales orchestrated a narrow Notts victory over Lancashire at Trent Bridge with a fifth T20 hundred that was as impressive for its judgment as much as its ferocity. Hales’ unbeaten 101, from 66 balls, was hard won against a determined Lancashire challenge and leaves Notts two points clear at the top of North group.Hales, aka Johnny Ringo, English cricket’s most infamous outlaw, found himself in a solo gunfight. While he fired off 12 fours and four sixes, the rest of the gang managed only eight boundaries between them. Even Hales was never entirely sure of his timing, but while others fell by the wayside, until his captain Steven Mullaney provided crucial late support, he just viewed it all laconically and got on with the job.”T20 hundreds don’t come around very often,” Hales said. “I felt like I wasn’t my usual self so I had to rein it in a bit. I didn’t think it was a particularly easy pitch to start on – there was a lot of steep bounce – but once we got a couple of partnerships going we managed to expand a bit.”Destructive batsman he might be, destructive lifestyle he might have been accused of at times, but he also showed impressive concern when he swung Tom Hartley, Lancashire’s tall and lithe left-arm spinner, over square leg for six. The ball hit a spectator in the face and Hales immediately jogged to the boundary to check on his health as members of St John Ambulance and Notts’ physio, James Pipe, also intervened.Hales now has the third most runs in the Blast, outdone by Leus du Plooy, who is relatively unswung in Derbyshire’s top order, and Glenn Phillips, Gloucestershire’s New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman. His strike rate, at 172.68, is surpassed by five players who have made more than 200 runs, including his prolific opening partner Joe Clarke.Sajid Mahmood held him to a run a ball, the tall and lithe left-arm spinner Tom Hartley not too far short of that. But he took full toll on the rest of Lancashire’s attack, none more so than his former Notts teammate, Luke Wood, whose left-arm pace was milked for 31 from 16 balls, amid a degree of good fortune.Related

He reached his fifty off Wood in bizarre fashion when he ducked a bouncer but glanced a boundary off a periscope bat. He was also fortunate against Wood, on 90, when his top-edged pull flew over the keeper for four. But no shot was more resplendent than the six that brought up his 100, his second in T20s for Notts, a short and wide one from Wood that he heaved over long on with merciless intent.Batting success in T20 is achieved by fine margins: Clarke failed on this occasion, slicing the excellent Mahmood to mid-off in the first over; Hales just cleared mid-on two overs later when Danny Lamb might have envisaged a similar outcome. Instead, Hales tormented Lamb in a 18-run over that set Notts moving, sowing confusion by swaggering around the crease wherever the mood took him.Hales was also involved in the run out of Sol Budinger, unwisely forcing him into a single to Finn Allen at backward point after initial hesitation by both batters. Budinger’s last-ball misfield had cost Notts against Derbyshire the previous night and he walked off with much puffing off cheeks.Notts’ middle order unravelled against a trio of Lancashire spinners, the weakest shot coming from Tom Moores, who tried to waft a wide one from Steven Croft, off one knee, over long off. Hales desperately needed support – just a sense of stability – and it came from Mullaney’s 25 from 16 as he stuck around for Hales’s late surge.Notts have tied three matches this season, including the first meeting between these sides at Old Trafford last Sunday and another one looked eminently possible for much of Lancashire’s innings.Alex Davies gave them a flyer with five sixes in his 39 from 15 balls, but Clarke put a stop to that on the square leg boundary, momentarily stepping over the rope with his right foot before pirouetting on his left to take a graceful one-legged catch. That wicket was one of three cheap ones for Matt Carter. The big offspinner is having an influential season; his tally of 13 wickets at an economy rate a touch over seven is arguably as good as it gets. He also bowled Allen, who failed to pull a length ball, and had Rob Jones lbw.Lancashire’s most wasteful moment was the run out of Lamb, whose lethargic response to Croft’s desire for a second run saw him yards short of his ground. From 101 for 5, Croft and Wood then shared a stand of 52 in 39, with Croft dropped on 20 at backward point, before being injured while stealing a bye to the wicketkeeper. After treatment, he was dismissed next ball as he failed to pull off a scoop. With 20 needed from eight balls, Lancashire never threatened. The game had been closed out in solid fashion by Luke Fletcher and Jake Ball. Four other members of an uncelebrated attack have gone at under 7.5 runs an over this season and this, allied to the acknowledged class of Hales and Clarke at the top of the order, is making them a tougher opposition than some anticipated. Lancashire, meanwhile, are a point outside the top four.

Since moving to Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022, Sterling has made 81 appearances for the Blues, scoring 19 times and providing 12 assists. He’s also come in for praise from West Ham forward Michail Antonio, who hailed Sterling’s pace following the Irons’ 3-1 win over Chelsea last August.

“He was unreal. After the game, we were calling him ‘Sonic’ because I’ve not seen a man move that quickly with a football. It was madness. He was driving everywhere. It’s the best game I’ve ever seen him play, he was on fire. He didn’t deserve to be on the losing team at all.”

Antonio may therefore be excited if Sterling was to move across London, but due to the forward’s huge salary, any deal could be a complicated one over the coming months.
