Chelsea leading race to sign "monstrous" £66m Nkunku upgrade

da realbet: Chelsea had yet another busy summer with Enzo Maresca’s first window as Chelsea manager bringing him 11 new players, whilst a further 11 left the club on a permanent basis, and 14 exited on loan.

da esoccer bet: The Blues spent a total of around £198.8m according to Transfermarkt, with the biggest move being Pedro Neto, who signed from Wolves for around £51.4m upfront, plus £2.6m in add-ons.

The Portugal international signed a seven-year deal with the club and has already made 14 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

The other signing made by Chelsea in this window on the flanks was Jadon Sancho, who joined on an initial loan deal from Manchester United, including an obligation to buy for a fee between £20-25m next summer. The 24-year-old winger has already made five appearances for the Blues, providing three assists in his 308 minutes played.

However, one area Chelsea did not manage to recruit was another striker to challenge Nicolas Jackson, after failed attempts for Samu Omorodion, Victor Osimhen, and Jhon Duran. This could see the Blues dip into the market in the January window or next summer, looking for a number nine.

Chelsea lead race to sign European goal machine

According to reports from the Daily Star, Chelsea will be leading the race for Sporting goal machine, Viktor Gyokeres next summer.

Manchester United are also said to be heavily interested, following the appointment of Sporting manager, Ruben Amorim, who has worked closely with the Swede for the past few seasons.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has described the 26-year-old striker as “monstrous”, and it’s hardly surprising when you consider he has the blend of being able to link with his teammates, run the channels, hurt teams in transition, and, of course, score goals.

The Swedish forward – who is said to be available for around £66m – has made 17 appearances for Sporting this season, already scoring 23 goals, providing four assists, and totalling 1,436 minutes played.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In short, he has been phenomenal, and his performances were capped off just this week when he scored a remarkable hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League, showing his ability to perform exceptionally against English opposition.

How Gyokeres compares to Nkunku

Chelsea’s two current striker options are doing well, with Jackson taking the starting spot in the side, making 11 appearances, scoring six goals, providing three assists, and totalling 813 minutes.

Nkunku, on the other hand, whilst still making 15 appearances so far this season, has found himself as the backup striker, starting cup competitions and coming from the bench in Premier League games. However, the Frenchman is clearly knocking on the door, scoring eight goals already.

So, how does he compare with Gyokeres? Well, it’s a resounding win for the former Coventry srikre who has so many desirable traits, not just scoring goals but also providing opportunities for others.

Both Gyokeres and Nkunku clearly offer clinical finishing in and around the box, as shown by their goals per 90, xG generated per 90, and goals/shot ratio.

However, Chelsea are clearly missing a profile of striker who can be more of a nuisance in the box, getting on the end of crosses, and helping them increase their box efficiency in that way.

Standing at 6 foot 1, with a bulkier frame than Jackson, Gyokeres gives that option, as he can win aerial battles due to his height and build, looking to score headers, but also drag defenders away with him in the box, creating space for others.

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres

This could even see Nkunku used as more of a number ten, playing off the striker, where he excels. One thing is for sure, Jackson and Gyokeres as striker options would be right up there with the best in the Premier League if Chelsea can pull it off.

"Clinical" player now wants to quit Chelsea as AC Milan plan January bid

da dobrowin: A “clinical” player now wants to leave Chelsea and has a “desire for a change of scenery”, with an elite club looking set to knock on his door in the January transfer window.

Players linked with Chelsea exits in January

da heads bet: Manager Enzo Maresca has showcased a real ruthlessness in axing players he deems unfit for his long-term plans, with his treatment of stars like Raheem Sterling in the summer highlighting that big-name players are no exception.

Chelsea in direct contact with £161k-per-week star ahead of potential move

Alongside Sterling, Maresca and Chelsea offloaded Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Angelo Gabriel, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Tino Anjorin, Thiago Silva, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Djordje Petrovic, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, David Datro Fofana, Aflie Gilchrist and Bashir Humphreys – either on loan or permanently – and a few more players could follow them out of the door this winter.

Indeed, it is believed Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk could be allowed to leave on loan, as the Ukraine international winger has been reduced to cup appearances under Maresca thus far.

Chiefs are keen for Mudryk to justify his potential £89 million price tag, and may well green-light a temporary exit so he can accumulate much-needed minutes.

Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile could also be sold by Chelsea, with the French defensive duo not exactly standing out as key players in Maresca’s matchday squad so far in the Premier League.

Left-back Ben Chilwell is most likely to leave Chelsea. According to Maresca, the £200,000-per-week defender was meant to leave in the summer, and it is believed that Chilwell is attracting serious interest from Manchester United ahead of January.

“I think so. Hopefully we can give him some minutes tomorrow,” said Maresca before Chilwell played 45 minutes against Barrow in the EFL Cup.

“The idea for him was to leave. In the moment that he’s here, he’s one of the squad, he’s training. He will be in the squad tomorrow, and hopefully we can give him some minutes.”

Carney Chukwuemeka wants to leave Chelsea

Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who has joined Chilwell in struggling for chances under Maresca, has also been linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door.

The £100,000-per-week ace is attracting interest from Serie A as Milan plan their own January transfer window, and the Rossoneri have shortlisted the player who they believe could seriously strengthen Paulo Fonseca’s ranks.

Carney Chukwuemeka

According to Calciomercato, Chukwuemeka is ready to leave Chelsea, and has a “desire for a change of scenery”. It is believed Milan are planning a loan bid for the 20-year-old when the transfer window reopens as they look to “take advantage” of Chukwuemeka’s eagerness to quit the Blues.

Chelsea signed the player from Aston Villa for around £22 million, right at the start of Clearlake Capital’s takeover in 2022, but things haven’t exactly taken off for him since then, despite some praise from the likes of Marcel Desailly.

“I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage,” said Desailly.

“He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do and he is clinical. I love it.”

Birmingham thought they had "another Demarai Gray", now he plays in China

da pixbet: Birmingham City fans won’t just be content with their side winning promotion at the end of the season, hopeful that the Blues could potentially take the Championship by storm after rising out of League One’s murky waters.

da bet esporte: Back-to-back promotions do happen, just ask Ipswich Town supporters, with Chris Davies wanting to be the manager to hopefully take Birmingham all the way back up to the Premier League one day, having been out of the big time since relegation at the end of the 2010/11 season.

When the Blues were routinely keeping their heads just above water in the second tier, before a disastrous relegation, they were also responsible for some top homegrown starlets rising up the ranks, with Demarai Gray one standout example.

Gray's time at Birmingham

Gray might not have quite reached the insane heights of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham after he left the club, nor Nathan Redmond who went on to be a household Premier League name, but the tricky winger has had a career of note after exiting the Blues in 2016.

Gray would fire home eight goals from 78 appearances in the West Midlands, on top of picking up four assists, which would then alert Premier League suitors such as Leicester City to his services.

The Foxes splashed out £3.75m to get their desired target, with Gray going on to become a dependable first-teamer at the King Power Stadium over various campaigns, amassing 13 goals and 15 assists from 169 total clashes.

The 5 foot 11 attacker also found himself on the books of both Bayer Leverkusen and Everton briefly, before a move to Saudi Arabia came to fruition, where the Al-Ettifaq FC winger now earns a bumper £75k-per-week salary.

With Gray going on to make a name for himself away from his boyhood employers, many homegrown products back at St. Andrew’s must have looked to the winger for inspiration when attempting to cut their own teeth in the senior game, with the Blues prodigy even labelled as ‘another Demarai Gray’ back in 2015.

What happened to Birmingham's next Demarai Gray

It was an outlandish label to put above the player in question’s head nine years ago, but that pressure was still put on his shoulders by then Birmingham boss Gary Rowett, who will no doubt regret this suggestion now.

Gary Rowett at Birmingham City.

Viv Solomon-Otobar – who lined up for the Blues down the opposite flank to Gray – was the talent heralded as the second coming of the ex-Birmingham number 33, off the back of scoring his first-ever strike for the club in a 5-2 win versus Fulham.

Away from scoring a notable goal at Craven Cottage, Solomon-Otobar would only go on to score one more strike for the second-tier outfit, with just eight Championship appearances coming his way during his final campaign.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Yet, Birmingham did want to keep Solomon-Otobar rooted at the club despite some up-and-down displays, even offering him a new contract after some loan spells away, but he opted to join Bulgarian titans CSKA Sofia instead in 2019 to begin his nomadic career post-Birmingham.

The former recipient of the Blues Young Player of the Season award has played in Bulgaria, Ukraine and Scotland since exiting, with a spell now out in faraway China seeing him shine.

Solomon-Otobar is now on the books of Chinese Super League side Cangzhou Mighty Lions, as the 28-year-old continues to try and rebuild his career after failing to live up to his top billing in England.

This year, in league action, Solomon-Otobar managed to amass an impressive ten goal contributions from 29 games, as the 28-year-old’s unusual career path goes on.

Rowett would never have anticipated the 5 foot 11 attacker’s playing days going this way, with Solomon-Otobar arguably now forgotten about at St. Andrew’s, rather than being remembered as another bright star from the club’s academy.

Smith hopes to 'get into a nice groove' for South Africa Tests

South Africa have caused him more trouble than any other of his regular Test opponents

Alex Malcolm11-Dec-2022

South Africa’s pace attack could be a true examination of Steven Smith’s batting•Getty Images

Steven Smith and South Africa. Rightly or wrongly, that nation will forever be associated with Australia’s best batter since Sir Donald Bradman. But it’s not just Cape Town and Sandpapergate that link Smith and South Africa together. It is no secret that South Africa have caused Australia’s batting savant more trouble than any other of his regular Test opponents.Bangladesh aside, who Smith has only faced twice, he averages 49 or more against all other Test opponents bar South Africa. To be fair to Smith, his average of 41.53 against South Africa would be the envy of most Test batters. Mark Waugh is lionised in Australia as a modern great and his career average was 41.81.Related

But for Smith, against the backdrop of his astonishing current career mark of 60.98, his record of just one century and three half-centuries in 17 innings against South Africa is a thorn in his side. The prospect of facing them again in a three-Test series for the first time since the infamous 2018 saga has him eager to prove a point in more ways than one.”I’m really excited,” Smith said following Australia’s series victory over West Indies in Adelaide. “South Africa is probably the one team, they’ve bowled pretty well to me in the past, my record is probably not quite as good against them as some of the others.”Some of the bowlers I’ll come up against, I’ve come up against previously. I’m really looking forward to the series like everyone else. Hopefully, I can get into a nice groove.”He is already in a nice groove. Smith believes he is batting the best he has since 2014 having returned to a more side-on method that incidentally yielded his lone Test century against South Africa in Centurion in 2014.He is fresh off feasting on West Indies in Perth where he scored 220 runs without being dismissed. But he is not resting on his laurels. He was frustrated at missing out on the fun in Adelaide, registering a rare duck in the first innings which stood as a shocking outlier on Australia’s scorecard wedged between Marnus Labuschagne’s 163 and Travis Head’s 175.Such is Smith’s thirst for batting and his thirst for improvement, prior to the fourth and final day in Adelaide with Australia’s two batting innings already completed in the game, Smith was in the nets facing throwdowns with red balls from the coaching staff to prepare for the first Test in Brisbane in six days’ time.”I feel in a good place, batting nicely, feel in good rhythm and I’m looking forward to it,” Smith said. “Had a hit against the red ball this morning in preparation, just changing from the pink, so the focus can now completely go to South Africa and I can’t wait.”He knows too that South Africa are a step up from what he has just been facing. West Indies quick Alzarri Joseph bowled a couple of brisk and decent spells in the two-Test series, nudging 140kph, but Smith largely avoided them. Instead, he had gorged on the mostly sub-130kph offerings from Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, as well as the less-than-threatening offspin of Roston Chase and Kraigg Brathwaite.Steven Smith reflects on events in Cape Town in 2018•Gallo Images/Getty Images

Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj will be waiting for Smith in Brisbane, having dismissed him in Tests three times each. Dean Elgar has oddly picked him up twice too. But Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi won’t be shy to test Smith’s revamped method out in the way that New Zealand’s Neil Wagner and England’s Mark Wood had caused him to review his technique across recent summers.”You play what’s in front of you,” Smith said. “Sometimes when you are facing faster bowlers it can be easier to score and things like that than if you’re facing someone bowling 130kph and nibbling them around.”That’s the key to any attack, having that kind of variety so you’re never getting into a rhythm as a batter. I think South Africa provide that; they have Nortje bowling 150kph, Rabada 140-150, then a left-armer in Jansen, and a good spinner in Maharaj. It will be a good challenge for our batters and hopefully, we can continue the way we’ve started the summer.”Smith will relish the challenge on the field. As difficult a prospect as South Africa’s attack is, it will always be more welcome than the constant revisiting of the events of Cape Town in 2018. They are inescapable for him, particularly having just stood in as captain against West Indies in the week David Warner created headlines even while attempting to avoid reopening old wounds.”The cricket we’ve played over the last four-and-half years, we’ve played the right way, we’ve been hard and played in the right spirit,” Smith said. “For us nothing changes, we are just going to continue to go about our business and hopefully continue playing good, entertaining cricket.”Smith and South Africa aren’t a match made in heaven, but they remain a promoter’s dream.

Bird and Siddle cut through South Australia, but Manenti provides boost

Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle wound back the clock to help Tasmania run through South Australia for 227 on the first day of their Sheffield Shield match. After the Redbacks won the toss, Bird claimed South Australia’s first four wickets in the morning session before Siddle cleaned up after lunch, with both bowlers finishing with 4 for 51.Only Jake Lehmann and debutant Ben Manenti offered any real resistance for the hosts, with the latter attacking Siddle late in his innings.Manenti’s first day in the Sheffield Shield then reached another high just before stumps, when his a one-handed screamer at second slip allowed Harry Conway to remove Caleb Jewel and leave Tasmania 1 for 17 in reply. That was a rare highlight for the Redbacks on a tough Sunday at Adelaide Oval. Bird in particular had the ball moving, with the 35-year-old beating openers Henry Hunt and Jake Weatherald off the seam to have them caught behind.Former Test skipper Tim Paine caught well behind the stumps in his second game back, diving to his left to remove Weatherald when Bird had squared up the left-hander.Bird claimed Travis Head’s wicket in his next over for five when the left-hander inside-edged a yorker onto his stumps. The former Test quick also trapped Jake Carder lbw for 13, leaving SA struggling at 4-59.About the only man who looked in against the seamer was Lehmann.  He brought up 50 just before tea when he pulled Bird for four amid three consecutive boundaries, after also taking a liking to Sam Rainbird earlier. The left-hander eventually fell victim to Siddle, who removed Lehmann and Wes Agar in successive balls in the final session. Siddle also got through Alex Carey’s bat and pad to bowl the Test wicketkeeper on 25, before gaining and edge from Conway to take his fourth victim. At that stage, it looked as though the Redbacks would likely be all out for less than 200, before Manenti got swinging later and hit Siddle for two powerful sixes over midwicket and mid-on.The son of Australia’s world champion men’s rugby sevens coach John Manenti, Ben helped the Redbacks put on 35 for the last wicket to give South Australia something to bowl at come Monday.

Amorim can axe Maguire for "exciting" teen who’s not played for Man Utd

da bet7: Manchester United’s centre-back depth has been questioned over the past couple of seasons, and Ruben Amorim will need to assess who is at his disposal.

da apostebet: Despite adding Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to their options at the heart of the defence, it still feels like they do not quite have the quality or availability in their squad.

One of the newcomers, Yoro, is yet to play for the club, although De Ligt has performed well since making the move from Bayern Munich. Lisandro Martinez seems to have put his fitness issues behind him, Jonny Evans has been a good squad player over the past two seasons, and Victor Lindelof is only on the fringe of the first team now.

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

Another of their first-team centre-backs who might split opinion is Harry Maguire.

Maguire’s Man United career

England international Maguire joined the 13-time Premier League champions in 2019, signing from Leicester City for £80m, a fee that is still a world record for a defender. He has certainly had a mixed time of things at United.

In total, the former club captain has made 215 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and grabbing eight assists in that time, one of which came in the FA Cup semi-final last season, a trophy United went on to lift.

Maguire was superb under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was made the captain just months into his Old Trafford career. However, upon the United legend’s sacking in 2021, he fell out of favour and has struggled to lock down a regular first-team spot.

This came to a head under former manager Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman stripping the captaincy from United’s number five and giving it to Bruno Fernandes. Despite this setback, Maguire acted like a model professional and simply continued to work hard for a starting berth.

Sadly, the Englishman has struggled with injuries in recent times. Maguire has missed four games already this term, and last season was even more; he was sidelined for 17 games in a campaign where his fitness problems were frustrating.

It remains to be seen whether or not Maguire will remain at Old Trafford beyond the 2024/25 season. His contract expires in June, but United can trigger a one-year extension. With that in mind, new boss Amorim may well decide to cut his losses and sell the experienced defender, much like Ten Hag reportedly planned to do.

If that is the case, the Red Devils have a superb young replacement in the esteemed Carrington academy who could be ready to step into the fold in a few years.

United’s academy centre-back prodigy

The player in question here is Godwill Kukonki. At just 16 years of age, he is highly rated by many at Old Trafford, with his inclusion in first-team training described as “exciting” by Manchester Evening News journalist Steve Railston. He is, however, yet to make a senior appearance for the club.

Kukonki is a left-footed centre-back, who is exceptionally talented on the ball. He has played all of his football so far for the Red Devils under-18 side, both domestically and in the UEFA Youth League. However, he has featured on the bench once in the Premier League 2.

This term, the defender has featured eight times in the under-18s Premier League, and once in the UEFA Youth League. Not only has he proven to be an excellent defender, but can also chip in with goals, and has three goal involvements to his name this season.

An excellent example of the youngster’s talent came in the European fixture, away to Lithuanian side FK Zalgiris under-19s. Not only did he showcase versatility by starting at left-back, but Kukonki was composed on the ball, completing 90% of his passes and grabbing an assist, as per Sofascore.

The first team could be a little too far out of reach yet for Kukonki. However, Amoirm is a manager who believes in academy players and gave 27 Sporting youth players their debut.

Combine that with United’s ethos of believing in the academy, and a debut for the youngster is not out of the question if he continues to thrive, thus putting Maguire’s status in the squad at further risk.

Lendl Simmons, the West Indies batter, has retired from international cricket.”When I wore the Maroon Colours of the West Indies Cricket for the first time on debut in ODIs on December 7th, 2006, little did I know that my international career would have lasted 16 years but my passion and love for the sport fuelled me every day,” he wrote in a message on Twitter.”I’m closing this chapter of International Cricket having played 144 matches and scoring 3,763 runs from all formats.”On Monday, an Instagram post by Simmons’ management team said that he had written a letter to Cricket West Indies last week, informing them about his decision to become a free agent and pursue opportunities on the franchise circuit.”I still do extensive training and keep myself relatively fit, so my focus is to continue playing franchise cricket for as long as my body permits,” he wrote. “Hopefully, I can continue to entertain the people of my region and all over the world for a few more years as I’m still timing the ball beautifully and beating bowling.” Simmons’ international career, as he noted in his tweet, spanned 16 years. He represented West Indies in eight Tests, 68 ODIs and 68 T20Is, scoring 3763 runs across all formats. It started with that ODI debut, against Pakistan in Faisalabad, but he was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Overall, he scored 1958 ODI runs, including two centuries, at an average of 31.58.

While Simmons’ numbers in Tests aren’t eye-catching – he did not score a single fifty – he carved quite a name for himself in the shortest format. He played a key role in West Indies’ triumph during the 2016 T20 World Cup, blasting a 51-ball 82 in the semi-final against hosts India. In total, Simmons scored 1527 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 120.80, with nine half-centuries. He last represented West Indies at the 2021 T20 World Cup, struggling to 16 off 35 balls as the team lost to South Africa.Simmons has enjoyed a stellar career in franchise cricket, representing several teams like Trinbago Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Karachi Kings and Sylhet Sunrisers. He is the highest run-getter in CPL history, with 2629 runs from 91 innings, including 20 half-centuries.He also helped Mumbai to two IPL trophies, in 2015 and 2017, scoring a total of 1079 runs from 29 innings during his time there.”As your agency, we take this opportunity to salute you king. You are arguably the most under estimated international cricketer in the West Indies,” his agents said on Instagram. “For that reason, we will accept your retirement announcement as a resignation and we will turn this into a refinement.”Earlier in the day, former West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin had also announced his international retirement, while leaving open the possibility of being a T20 freelancer.
