Toby Roland-Jones signs contract extension at Middlesex

Fast bowler backed after injury setbacks, and will stay with club at least until 2023

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2022Toby Roland-Jones will stay with Middlesex at least until the end of 2023, after signing a contract extension that will take him into his 13th year with the club.Roland-Jones has endured an injury-plagued few years, including a knee cartilage injury that took four months out of his 2021 season, following back and shoulder problems that had limited his involvement since 2018.However, he reaffirmed his importance to Middlesex with a five-wicket haul against Derbyshire on his first-class comeback in September, and with Richard Johnson having been appointed as the club’s new head coach, Roland-Jones will remain a key part of their plans for the coming seasons.”I am absolutely delighted to commit to Middlesex Cricket for the next two years,” Roland-Jones said. “I feel hugely fortunate that my passion for the club and the game continues to grow, as it has since the day I joined, back in 2010.”The excitement and potential in this squad gives us every opportunity to return this club to the level it should be at, and I look forward to playing any part I can to make that happen.”With the appointment of Richard Johnson as First Team Coach yesterday, we have a high-quality coach returning to the club, and someone who has previously worked with and helped so many of our players in the earlier parts of their careers. I know the players can’t wait to get started under him, and I’m sure he returns as eager as we all are to bring the club success.”Related

Roland-Jones has made a total of 224 appearances for Middlesex across all three formats of the game, with a total of 545 wickets. His debut for the club came in 2010, when he picked up two five-wicket hauls in eight appearances, and in 2015, he made his maiden first-class hundred against Yorkshire at Lord’s.His place in club folklore was secured in the final match of the 2016 season, when he claimed a hat-trick against Yorkshire to secure the County Championship title. His final wicket completed a ten-wicket haul, and took his tally for the season to 54 at 28.22.The following year, Roland-Jones made the first of his four Test appearances, claiming five wickets on debut against South Africa at The Oval, but his hopes of starring in that winter’s Ashes were curtailed by the diagnosis of a stress fracture in his back.Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s head of Men’s Performance, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to agree this extension to Toby’s contract. He is a huge character in our dressing room, a great influence to the rest of our group, and a key player for us on the field.”We saw at the back end of last season what he is capable of as a player, just like we have witnessed for many seasons beforehand, and I am certain that we’ll be seeing much more of that over the next two seasons.”

Matt Henry to replace Trent Boult as New Zealand look to improve record against South Africa

Big picture

The biggest rivalry in global rugby – between All Blacks and Springboks – is not mirrored in world cricket but Dean Elgar and Tim Southee think it could be. Last week, they both spoke of the “great rivalry” that exists between their two cricket sides but you’d be forgiven for thinking they’re simply talking things up.Historically, the cricketing match-up between South Africa and New Zealand has been quite one-sided. South Africa have dominated these encounters – pre- and post-readmission – and won 13 of the 16 series they’ve played against New Zealand, who have not emerged victorious from any. All told, New Zealand have only beaten South Africa four times in 45 Tests but the teams meet so infrequently that perhaps these numbers don’t really matter. They last played against each other five years ago, in 2017, and South Africa could consider themselves fortunate to have got away with a 1-0 series win after the weather saved them in the third Test in Hamilton. Only four members of the current South African squad – Elgar, Temba Bavuma, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada – played in that series and they have since undergone an overhaul, mainly in administration but also in personnel, and can finally have the foundations of a rebuild.New Zealand may slowly find themselves in a similar position. Ross Taylor has retired, Kane Williamson’s elbow injury has sidelined him, Neil Wagner is in his mid-30s, and Southee and Trent Boult are not far behind. So far, their transition appears to be going smoother than South Africa’s did but that doesn’t mean they can capitalise too much on the schadenfreude.Related

South Africa have won three of their last four Test series, including a come-from-behind win against India. There is depth in their squad and talent in the provincial pools, and despite head coach Mark Boucher’s disciplinary hearing hanging over the squad, they seem to be getting on with things in a clinical way. There was even little to no complaints about the ten-day quarantine they had to serve in New Zealand, though Rassie van der Dussen expressed hope it would be the last time they had had to travel under such strict restrictions. South Africa were allowed to train, which has given them more time to acclimatise to conditions, not least because both Tests will take place in Christchurch. If they thought batting would be easier than it has been at home, they’re probably wrong. This has been built up as a contest of the quicks with 14 seamers sprinkled across both squads. As was the case during South Africa’s series against India, it may not be about big runs as much as it is about crucial partnerships, strong temperaments and small margins. There are important incentives to do well for both teams though. New Zealand are the current holders of the Test mace and ranked No. 2, so beating them would arguably rank higher for South Africa than their recent success against India at home. It would also strengthen South Africa’s position on the World Test Championship points table. New Zealand, meanwhile, dropped points against Bangladesh and they visit England and Pakistan later this year, so they need to bank all the home points they can.

In the spotlight

This is the first time South African born batter Devon Conway will play against his former countrymen. Conway is from Johannesburg and played for teams in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, so he will be familiar to many in the current South Africa squad but should not expect things to be too friendly. Elgar said the team “doesn’t see him as South African anymore” and will treat him like any other member of the opposition. “Once you walk over that white line, it is all business, irrespective if he is your friend or not,” Elgar said. Still, South Africa would have been thinking about Conway and his “purple patch”, as Elgar called it, as they identify key players in the New Zealand side. Conway’s Test career is only five matches old but he has already scored three centuries, including a double-hundred at Lord’s, and averages close to 70.Aiden Markram averages 26.47 in his last 19 Tests•AFP/Getty Images

In six innings against India, Aiden Markram scored only 76 runs at an average of 12.66, which means he now averages 26.47 in his last 19 Tests. South Africa have opted to stick with him on reputation, talent and white-ball form, but Markram must know the pressure is on to perform. Sarel Erwee is in the squad and likely to bat at No. 3 in Keegan Petersen’s absence. A good series for him could force Markram into the margins unless he matches up with runs of his own. While Markram’s ability has never been in doubt, this series could be a decisive one in the immediate future of his Test career.

Team news

Coach Gary Stead confirmed New Zealand’s top five will see Conway continue to occupy the No. 3 spot and Henry Nicholls move up to No. 4 in place of the now-retired Taylor. That could create room for an allrounder at No. 7. Having gone for a four-pronged specialist pace attack at this venue in the past, Stead confirmed New Zealand will adopt the same strategy and Matt Henry will replace Trent Boult, who is on paternity leave.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Tom Latham (capt), 2 Will Young, 3 Devon Conway, 4 Henry Nicholls, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Tom Blundell (wk), 7 Colin de Grandhomme, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Matt HenrySarel Erwee is the favourite to make his debut at No. 3 ahead of Zubayr Hamza or Ryan Rickelton. Though he is an opening batter, he has been travelling with the South African side over the last year and Elgar has thrown his weight behind giving Erwee an opportunity. Though Maharaj didn’t bowl much during the India series, South Africa are usually reluctant to go without a spinner, which could see him keep his place. Should South Africa dispense with Maharaj, they may look to Wiaan Mulder or one of Glenton Stuurman or Lutho Sipamla for an extra seam-bowling option.South Africa: (probable) 1 Dean Elgar (capt), 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Sarel Erwee 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Temba Bavuma, 6 Kyle Verreynne (wk), 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada 10 Duanne Olivier, 11 Lungi Ngidi

Pitch and conditions

Expect pace and bounce on green tops for this series with very little in it for the spinners. That’s the view of van der Dussen, who called the Hagley Oval surfaces similar to the ones at the Lincoln University, where South Africa have been training. “The wickets look very green and very grassy but the surface underneath is quite hard so it makes it quite consistent in terms of bounce and pace,” he said. New Zealand have assessed the pitch as similar to the one on which they played Bangladesh earlier this year, where New Zealand scored 521 for 6 and bowled Bangladesh out for 126 and 278.After persistent rain in the build-up, the weather mostly cleared in Christchurch. Days will be sunny and mild, with temperatures in the early 20s but there is a 90% chance of rain on the third day.

Stats and trivia

  • The last time New Zealand were without both Taylor and Williamson was in January 2008, against Bangladesh. They have played 117 Tests since.
  • Markram needs 100 runs to reach 2000 Test runs.

Quotes

“They’re a quality side. They’ve come off beating India in South Africa a couple of weeks ago. They’ve got classy players throughout. While they lack experience, they’re a different team from what we’ve seen in the past, we cannot underestimate them.”
“The teams of the past have been really successful over here. The conditions favour seam bowling, and that might be a reason for that. It’s a proud record to be part of. It’s different in this series. They’ve been really successful over the last two years. They’ve played a lot of cricket at home. They know their conditions well and they are quite suited to it.”

As a result, the ex-Foxes boss says that he is unwilling to risk the right-back, who has only made four appearances this season. He was initially suspended for the first three fixtures of the campaign but was also battling a hamstring injury, and only returned in October. Last season, he made just 11 appearances as he again struggled with hamstring issues, and was forced to undergo surgery.

West Ham leading race to sign “remarkable” CF who’s better than Duran

West Ham's summer transfer window looks like it is about to heat up, as new manager Julen Lopetegui looks to bolster his side ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, in an attempt to return to those European places.

After the signings of Max Kilman from Wolves, who previously played under Lopetegui, and Brazilian youngster Luis Guilherme, West Ham still have a number of positions they are looking to improve, such as a right back, left-winger, and a striker.

One of the names being touted for the striker position is Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran. The 20-year-old has been linked to West Ham, Chelsea and Newcastle in recent weeks, with Duran wanting a move to play more first-team football, currently waiting in the shadows of Ollie Watkins.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports from GIVEMESPORT, West Ham are set to attempt a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, as Tottenham Hotspur are also keen, and preparing a "lowball offer" for the 28-year-old.

The reports suggest Brentford have slashed their demands for the striker, now looking for under £50m, as the English forward enters the last 12 months of his deal.

Ivan Toney for England

It seems West Ham and Tottenham are the last remaining parties interested, after initial interest had been reported from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Toney vs Duran comparison

Thomas Frank has praised Toney, calling the forward "remarkable" back in 2023, after he scored his 20th Premier League goal of the season against Nottingham Forest.

Toney made 17 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals, and providing two assists in 1,449 minutes. However, the season prior, Toney posted an outstanding term, scoring 20 Premier League goals in 33 games, and providing four assists.

So, whilst Duran actually had more G/A involvement in fewer minutes than Toney last season (scoring eight goals, in 1,103 minutes in all competitions), Toney still has the pedigree to fall back on, having scored 20 Premier League goals the season before, which is a highly sought after commodity.

Toney has shown, throughout his time at Brentford, his ability to consistently post goals and assists, managing to translate that exceptional 41 G/A Championship season into back-to-back double-digit G/A seasons in the Premier League.

This is something that could significantly improve West Ham, as the majority of their goals currently come from wide areas, with Jarrod Bowen scoring 16, and Mohammed Kudus scoring eight in the top-flight. Recognised strikers at the club, Michail Antonio and Danny Ings only contributed with seven Premier League strikes, and two assists between them.

Michail Antonio scores for West Ham

Duran is more of a gamble. West Ham would be buying him based on his metrics produced from limited minutes, and the raw ball-striking ability he possesses. His 3.79 shots per 90 on average, 0.95 non-penalty goals per 90, and 3.79 aerials won per 90, all rank above Toney.

However, whilst Duran offers extremely high potential, and excellent performance in key metrics for a striker, Toney offers the experience of doing it consistently at Premier League level. That will be key during Lopetegui's first year at the wheel.

The reactions on Twitter following Pakistan’s close three-wicket win over Sri Lanka

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jun-2017Chasing 237, Pakistan’s semi-final hopes were looking up when they were 92 for 1. It started fading as the slide began: 92 for 2… 95 for 3… 110 for 4… 131 for 5… 137 for 6… and eventually 162 for 7. But Sarfraz Ahmed, their captain, and Mohammad Amir combined to see them home, much to the delight of their supporters.

Before his composure with the bat, Mohammad Amir had begun the slide in Sri Lanka’s innings, removing the two set batsmen in Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella.

Sri Lanka would rue the chances they missed on the field.

Lasith Malinga tried his best to fashion a win but his efforts seemed futile as Sarfraz Ahmed was dropped twice in six balls off his bowling.

Was Sri Lanka’s performance one of the worst seen on the field in recent times?

The match was surely the best in the group phase of a tournament that had too many lacklustre contests.

Leeds keen on signing "fantastic" attacker who rejected them in the summer

Leeds United are now well-placed to sign a “fantastic” player who rejected them in the summer transfer window, according to ex-scout Mick Brown.

Leeds on the march under Farke

Leeds are showing no signs of slowing down in their pursuit of promotion from the Championship, after a remarkable first half of the season, but Daniel Farke will be well aware just how difficult it will be to fend off the likes of Burnley and Sheffield United.

Joe Rodon

As such, Farke may look at strengthening his squad this January, and there have been reports that he is eyeing a move for Sporting CP’s Dario Essugo to bolster his options in central midfield.

The promotion hopefuls are also looking at Premier League players to strengthen their squad, with Nottingham Forest defender Andrew Omobamidele believed to be of interest amid a lack of game time at the City Ground.

With Aston Villa attacker Louie Barry on the radar, it is clear that Farke is keen on strengthening in a number of areas this winter, and Barry is not the only Villa player that Leeds are interested in.

In a recent interview with Football Insider, Brown has stated that he believes Emiliano Buendia is once again of interest to the Whites, despite the midfielder rejecting a move to Elland Road back in the summer.

Brown said: “He turned down the move in the summer because it was a step down. But from where he is at the moment, it would be a step up because he isn’t playing.

“He’s got a good reputation at Aston Villa, but he’s not exactly shone there. I don’t think Unai Emery fancies him as a part of his team, so he’d be open to letting him go.

Leeds could sign Farke's new Buendia in PL star who's "like Odegaard"

Leeds United have been linked with an interest in the attacking midfielder ahead of January.

By
Dan Emery

Dec 25, 2024

“Leeds are a very, very good Championship side, but I don’t think they’re a Premier League side at the moment. They’re somewhere in between.

“They’ll be looking to add the type of quality which can help them make that step up. So I understand the interest is there, but I think they also have reservations about him.”

Buendia could be a top signing for Leeds

Although the 28-year-old is struggling for game time at Villa this season, he has proven himself to be a top Championship player in the past, picking up 15 goals and 16 assists in 39 games for Norwich City in the 2020-21 season under Farke.

Given the level of his performances, the attacking midfielder was awarded Norwich’s Player of the Season award:

The maestro has also been impressive at times during his time with the Villans, with former manager Steven Gerrard lauding him as “fantastic” at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.

As such, it is promising news that Brown believes a move to Elland Road is possible this January, and he could be the type of signing to help Leeds get over the line in their battle for promotion.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

MLS has been steadily expanding since the arrival of David Beckham at LA Galaxy and has seen multiple top stars – such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Villa, and Thierry Henry – attempt to raise the profile of the league. Messi has taken it to new heights, however, as evidenced by the fact that Chicago Fire set an attendance record on Sunday when they hosted Messi's Miami at Soldier Field. More than 62,000 fans were in attendance for the 0-0 draw and clubs are now considering moving fixtures to bigger venues when the Herons are visiting, per .

  • WHAT MASCHERANO SAID

Mascherano told reporters, after Messi hit the bar twice in the stalemate: "In the summer, Messi will have been here for two years, and I think he's changing how the world sees MLS in one way or another. There's no doubt about that. In the end, we're talking about a player who's capable of achieving all of that, of giving maximum visibility to a league like this.

"We saw it today, and it's one of the many examples of everything he generates. The people came to see him, that's the reality."

Mascherano added: "Now, MLS has the responsibility to continue advancing. It's made progress, but it's necessary to continue supporting the fact that I'm here to continue developing soccer in this country. He's a unique, unrepeatable player. Everywhere he's been, he's marked a before and after."
