Stones wore the captain's armband as England lost 2-1 to Greece in farcical circumstances on Thursday evening. Having seemingly rescued a 1-1 draw late on through Jude Bellingham's equaliser, Greece won the game in injury time as Vangelis Pavlidis scored with seconds remaining. The victory was a hugely emotionally-charged one for Greece, because team-mate George Baldock tragically died on Wednesday.

England were stunned by the Greek performance and Stones has now admitted that the Three Lions' opponents were facing a remarkably difficult evening, after the death of their team-mate.

WHAT STONES SAID

Stones said: “On a personal note, absolutely gutted.

“First time with the armband, and a result like this. It’s hard to put into words to be honest after every emotion yesterday, today we prepared how we normally do and it didn’t come off so it’s just a shame it was on a night like this.

“We have got to give credit to them, from the start they put us right under pressure. We found it difficult to come out from the back, and play our normal football to break the lines. They were very compact so it was disappointing from us.”

He added: "For everyone in the dressing room and The FA, condolences to his family.

"A few of the boys were close to him. We knew it wasn't an easy day for them. (England reserve goalkeeper) Dean Henderson was close to him, it wasn't easy for him with that news."

Wesley Barresi announces retirement from all forms of cricket

He ends his career as the all-time leading scorer for Netherlands in List A cricket

Peter Della Penna15-Feb-2021Wesley Barresi, a staple of the Netherlands batting order throughout the 2010s, has retired from all forms of cricket at the age of 36. Barresi was one of the national team’s most unsung heroes for his role in numerous memorable wins over Test nations, and took to social media to formally end his career.”I’ve been incredibly privileged to not only participate in three cricket world cups, represent a country and achieve some memorable feats but more importantly I’ve had the pleasure of doing this for 18 years!” Barresi posted over Twitter on Monday. “The world of cricket doesn’t quite understand the sacrifice, dedication and self motivation that goes into being an ‘associate cricketer’. I look back at some of those glorious memories and know we did it all on our own.”Born in Johannesburg, Barresi made four first-class appearances for the Easterns in 2004 and 2005 before making his national team debut for Netherlands against Canada in Rotterdam in July 2009. He wound up making 18 first-class appearances in the ICC Intercontinental Cup for them, scoring 608 runs.Barresi had a much better output in limited-overs cricket. He ended his career as the all-time leading scorer for Netherlands in List A cricket with 2871 runs in 109 matches with two centuries and 19 half-centuries. He made his ODI debut in July 2010 against Scotland at World Cricket League Division One on home soil.

A few weeks later, Barresi played arguably his most significant ODI innings, scoring an unbeaten 64 of 43 balls to clinch Netherlands’ first ODI win over a Full Member when they chased down a target of 200 with seven balls to spare to defeat Bangladesh in Glasgow. His lone ODI century came in January 2014, a match more infamous in Dutch circles for the stunning chase completed by Kenya that kept Netherlands out of the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup Qualifier and ended their ODI status for the next four years.Ironically, Barresi’s only other List A century came in the match that won ODI status back for Netherlands, an eight-wicket win over Namibia in the final round of the 2017 WCL Championship in Dubai.

However, the wicketkeeper-batsman may be best remembered for his pivotal role in a pair of triumphs at the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. In an epic win over Ireland that secured a place for Netherlands in the main draw, Barresi scored 40 not out off 22 balls to chase down 190 in just 14 overs with six wickets in hand. Ten days later, he top-scored with 48 off 45 balls as Netherlands completed an emphatic 45-run win over England, sending a message that their win over the same opponents at Lord’s to open the 2009 tournament was no fluke.Barresi is one of only three Netherlands players – along with Ben Cooper and Stephan Myburgh – to score more than 1000 runs in T20 cricket, racking up 1165 runs in 65 matches. He took a particular liking to British and Irish competition. Aside from his knocks to help defeat England and Ireland in 2014, his four highest scores in T20Is all came against Scotland. That included a career-best 75 not out in November 2013 in Abu Dhabi during an eight-wicket win in the knockout phase of the T20 World Cup Qualifier, a result that kept Netherlands alive before a win over Papua New Guinea secured their place in Bangladesh for a historic run a few months later.

His final appearances for Netherlands came in the summer of 2019 against Zimbabwe. He scored 39 not out to see his team over the line by seven wickets for their first ODI win against Zimbabwe and scored 22 two days later in his final ODI innings in another win over Zimbabwe. He then scored 8 and 4 in the two T20Is that followed, another Netherlands win before a tied match was claimed by Zimbabwe in a Super Over.Having given up the wicketkeeping role to Scott Edwards a year earlier to play as a specialist batsman, Barresi lost his place in the Netherlands squad altogether following his lean form in the Zimbabwe T20Is. He was dropped for the four-match T20I series against UAE later in the summer of 2019 and was unable to secure a recall into the squad for the 2019 T20 World Cup Qualifier in the UAE, where they defeated PNG in the final.”It’s been a tough decision to make and a sad one to accept but I find myself at peace with my decision now,” Barresi wrote in his retirement post.

Old Trafford Test: can Australia fit in both Marsh and Green? What about Warner?

One way to play both allrounders is by fielding an all-pace attack, but Australia last did that in 2010

Andrew McGlashan11-Jul-20231:54

Will Australia replace David Warner in the fourth Ashes Test?

In the gap between the Headingley and Old Trafford Tests, the minds of the Australia selectors will be occupied with the tough decision of what to do with the make-up of the side after Mitchell Marsh’s stunning return to Test cricket, and the availability of Cameron Green following his minor hamstring injury. As a result of that injury to Green, Marsh took his place for the third Test at Headingley, and plundered a run-a-ball 118 while also removing Zak Crawley twice in the match.”We’ve got a lot to consider and a lot to weigh up, and Mitch Marsh has put a question to us no doubt,” Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald said.Related

  • Starc okay with high economy to make high impact

  • David Warner's spot could come under scrutiny for Old Trafford Test

  • Cummins, Starc bust a gut but Australia's over-reliance is telling

  • Switch Hit: Wood, Woakes, Woohoo!

When the Ashes squad was originally announced, national selector George Bailey had indicated it was possible that both allrounders could play together. “That’s a potential, absolutely,” he said. “If that’s on the cards, it would be exciting times if you could start to squeeze in two or three allrounders into your top six if they were batting well enough.”However, despite the all-round performance in the third Test, Marsh himself was not so sure of that happening. “I don’t think there is [a chance of both him and Green playing in the same XI],” he told cricket.com.au in the aftermath of the loss at Headingley. “Unfortunately, there’s not, [and] that’s all right.”But Pat Cummins acknowledged that Marsh was tough to leave out. “Yeah, it’s possible,” Cummins said of playing both allrounders. “But, I mean, it was a pretty impressive week, wasn’t it?”So is there a way Marsh and Green can play in the same team? Here are a few options.

The big one: drop David Warner

Let’s start with what would be a huge moment were it to occur. David Warner’s twin failures at Headingley, in familiar style against Stuart Broad, could have come at a very bad time. If one of the top five was to be left out to accommodate Green – much in the way Usman Khawaja had lost his spot to make room for Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith in 2019 – then the spotlight will be on Warner. However, it’s only one game ago that he played a crucial role in Australia’s victory at Lord’s, making 66 in the first innings and combining for opening stands of 73 and 63 alongside Khawaja in some of the toughest batting conditions of the game under cloudy skies.Speaking following the second day at Headingley, McDonald lauded those performances by Warner, but while talking again after the loss, he stopped short of guaranteeing Warner his place for Old Trafford.”I think we’ve got everything to consider in terms of Mitch Marsh coming in – what the balance looks like, [and] our allrounders – and there will be an assessment of the players at the back end of this Test,” he said. “We’ve got an extra batter who’s put his hand up, and we’ll have to consider the options ahead.”There would be a cascading effect if Warner was left out, which could potentially mean destabilising the XI, as someone would need to open. Travis Head could be an option after filling the role in India, although those were vastly different conditions, and he remains key at No. 5. Labuschagne could go up one spot, but he’s not looking in the best of form at the moment. It was even put to McDonald whether Marsh could open, as he has recently done in ODIs.”He did pretty well down the middle order,” he said. “To put him up to open in English conditions would probably be something we haven’t discussed yet. But we do have some time between now and the next Test.”

Is Labuschagne vulnerable?

It seems an absurd question to ask, but for the first time since he returned to Test cricket during the 2019 Ashes, Labuschagne is going through, by his high standards, a lean run which has brought just two half-centuries in his last 21 innings. He has looked out of sorts on this tour, where he got a working over from India’s quicks in the World Test Championship final before nicking off to Stuart Broad’s outswinger at Edgbaston. At Headingley, his slog sweep to deep midwicket was the moment where England got themselves back into the match. Labuschagne has, however, reached double figures in seven of his eight innings on the tour.”I think the starts are the important part,” McDonald said. “If you can get a start, you can show your method can stand up to the challenges. Maybe he’s trying to expand at certain times when he doesn’t need to, and that’s a conversation he’ll be having with himself and the coaches. But I think if you’re not getting starts, it’s more of a concern.”Todd Murphy had a limited role in the third Test•AFP

Leave out the spinner

Headingley was the first time in 101 matches that Australia did not have Nathan Lyon in their side. They had managed to overcome his absence for much of Lord’s, but his replacement, Todd Murphy had a very limited role in the third Test.Murphy claimed Ben Stokes in the first innings but not before being dispatched for five sixes and, significantly, only bowled two overs during England’s chase – one before lunch and then another when only another 30 runs were needed. In theory, Green could slot in as another pace-bowling option as part of a five-man attack, which would also provide an incredibly long batting order. But it’s unlikely that Australia would go into a Test without a specialist spinner. It’s something they have not done since 2011-12 against India in Perth when they fielded a frontline attack of Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc and Ben Hilfenhaus.Historically, Old Trafford has a history of assisting the spinners – Shane Warne famously loved the ground – by offering bounce as well as turn, although Lyon has only claimed three wickets in two outings there. In fact, since 2013, the ground has the second-worst average for spinners of all England’s men’s Test venues.”We like to have a balanced attack, and it gives you options,” McDonald said. “You can take pace out of the game and you become one dimensional – whether it be with the right-arm bowlers or just pace bowlers in general – without the ability to turn to a spinner. We’ll have to assess that, but as it sits at the moment, we do like to have the spinner in the team.”Does Cameron Green come straight back in?•Getty Images

Maybe, at the end of the day, they can’t

So it could back come back to what Marsh believes. He and Green can’t play in the same team. The one other factor to consider is that before his injury, Green had not found his top form on this tour either. His batting average after three Tests – including the WTC final – is 19.16, while his bowling average is also a very high 45.60. His biggest impact arguably has been while fielding in the gully region. And Green does not have to come straight back. For all that he is tipped to be a generational star, it is rare that a young player goes through the early stages of a career with being omitted somewhere.”There’s not a straightforward answer really,” McDonald said. “Cameron Green is important to the structure of the team as well, with his all-round capabilities. He’s going to be fully fit and available for Manchester, so there’s nothing to hide there. We’ve got a decision to make. It’s going to be tough.”

Alonso's future has been a hot topic of discussion, especially as the ongoing season nears its conclusion. Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga game against Bochum on Friday, it was widely expected that Alonso would announce a decision. However, the former Spanish international shocked everyone when asked about his future, steering clear of the topic and refusing to provide any clarifications.

AdvertisementWHAT XABI ALONSO SAID

"I'm staying focused on this season. We're in an important phase and we don't want to speculate," Alonso told reporters on Thursday. "We don't want to think about anything other than football. I'm focused on this season, and nothing else. The situation is a different one. At the time [last year], there was something to decide. This time there isn't. That's the big difference."

Alonso has a contract with Leverkusen until 2026 and has been heavily tipped to take over the head coach role at Madrid from Carlo Ancelotti, who also has one year left on his contract.

The Italian manager has reiterated his desire to continue at the Santiago Bernabeu beyond his current deal, but his future at the club could be in jeopardy should he fail to lead Los Blancos to a La Liga or Champions League title at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Alonso's statements are now going to keep Madrid in limbo, as the club reportedly met the Spanish coach's representatives earlier in the season to discuss his potential arrival ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The reigning Bundesliga champions are currently six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Alonso's troops will take on Bochum on Friday in hopes to cut the gap between them and the Bavarian giants.

Double trouble

When two England batsmen make 250-plus scores within a span of three months, it does result in interesting matches

Bill Ricquier26-Feb-2016When Ben Stokes made 258 against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2016, he became the second Englishman in three months to have made 250-plus in a Test innings. Alastair Cook scored 263 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in October 2015. This is very unusual for England. The last time two of their batsmen made such big scores in such a short period was in the home series against West Indies in 1957, when Peter May made 285 in the first Test and Tom Graveney 258 in the third.Oddly enough, England failed to win any of these games. This is perhaps not as surprising as it might seem, although none of these games was entirely typical – the type here being one where one or more batsmen makes an enormous score.Games such as this usually go one of two ways: an overwhelming win or a numbingly dull draw. You don’t get many nail-biting finishes. The Oval 1938 provided a classic instance of the former. England won this extraordinary match by an innings and 579 runs, making a then record score of 903 for 7, with the 22-year-old Len Hutton making 364 in over 13 hours. Australia, in contrast, were bowled out twice in four-and-a-half hours. Australia’s captain was Don Bradman (who made five scores of over 250 in his career). But Bradman twisted his ankle while bowling (somewhat improbably ) and did not bat in either innings: neither did opening batsman Jack Fingleton. So this stands out as an extreme example of the first type.A similar case of ruthless dominance, albeit on a smaller scale, occurred in Calcutta in 1958-59. Rohan Kanhai made 256 in a West Indies total of 614 for 5. India managed 124 and 154. In their second innings, fast bowler Roy Gilchrist took 6 for 55. Seven batsmen were clean bowled and three caught behind. In Colombo in 1997, India made 537 for 8, with Sachin Tendulkar , one of three centurions, top-scoring with 143. Sri Lanka replied with 952 for 6: Sanath Jayasuriya made 340. After that there was no time for anything else. That is an extreme version of the second type , but there are plenty more where that came from. (Jayasuriya made two Test scores of over 250 though many would argue that his most significant innings was his 213 at The Oval in 1998.)A slightly unusual example was England’s game against the West Indies in Kingston in 1929-30. This was the unique winter when MCC sent two representative sides out, one to the Caribbean and one to New Zealand. The Kingston game was the fourth of the series and, each side having won once, it was decided that the game would be played to a finish. As it turned out, nine days weren’t enough. England batted first and made 849, Andrew Sandham scoring 325 with a seven, a five and 27 fours. It was Test cricket’s highest score for three months; Bradman scored 334 at Headingley in June 1930. West Indies were bowled out for 286. England really should have won but their captain, the Honourable FSG Calthorpe must have felt that their lead of 563 was not sufficient and decided to bat again rather than enforce the follow-on. On the eighth and ninth days it rained and then the England players had to go home. The game was drawn” by agreement”.Now those four England games.May’s innings of 285 not out at Edgbaston was one of the great rearguards, like Hanif Mohammed’s 337 in Bridgetown in 1958 and Gary Kirsten’s 275 against England in Durban in 1999. But May’s innings was genuinely pivotal. On the West Indies’ previous visit to England, in 1950, a key influence in their unexpected victory had been the bowling of their young spinners, Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine. Valentine did not play at Edgbaston but Ramadhin was all over England on the first day and bowled them out for 186. West Indies made 474 (Collie Smith 161) and their position seemed indomitable. But May and Colin Cowdrey put on 411 for the fourth wicket in England’s second innings. Ramadhin took 2 for 179 in 98 overs. When they finally batted again the West Indies were like a different side, scrambling to save the game at 72 for 7.England won three of the remaining four games in the series by an innings but could not win the third Test at Trent Bridge. Graveney’s 258 was one of three centuries as England piled up 619 for 6. West Indies were forced to follow on despite Frank Worrell carrying his bat for 191. Brian Statham and Fred Trueman reduced them to 89 for 5 in their second innings but Smith again played magnificently for 168 and captain John Goddard hung on for over three hours for 61. In the end, England had too much to do in their second innings.Abu Dhabi 2015 was not unlike Edgbaston 1957. On England’s previous visit to the UAE they had been routed 3-0 by Pakistan’s spinners. Cook was under pressure as his side faced a Pakistan first innings of 523 for 8. Cook’s innings of 263 took 836 minutes: the third-longest innings by minutes batted. (Cook had previously made 294 against India and of course there was his mood-changing 235 not out in Brisbane in 2010.) Then England surprised everyone by bowling Pakistan out for 173, leaving themselves a target of 99 to win. For the usual assortment of reasons they could not quite manage this. Cook, like May, was criticised for batting on too long. But few of the pundits expected Adil Rashid, who took none for 163 in his first innings in Test cricket, to get 5 for 64 in the second.Cape Town 2016 was a one-off entirely because of the astonishing innings by Stokes. His 258 took 338 minutes and 198 balls. Stokes went from 74 to 204 in the first session of the second day. When Cook declared at 629 for 6 on the second afternoon there was, as they say, so much time left in the game. What this means to the fielding side is enough time to bowl the opposition out twice. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out like that. Hashim Amla (two scores of over 250 but a mere 201 here) was able to declare on the fourth evening on 627 for 7 (made in 211 overs compared to England’s 125.5). The true significance of Stokes’ innings was now becoming clear: he had played so well that England could actually lose. When they took lunch on the fifth day at 87 for 4, it really did look possible. Cook must have been starting to have anxious thoughts about modern England’s nightmare game – Adelaide 2006-7. Had he, like Andrew Flintoff, declared not too late but too early? In the end a combination of Jonny Bairstow and bad light saw England to safety.Stokes must have been relieved. After all, you wouldn’t want to be the first player to score 250- plus in a Test innings and end up on the losing side.

Free agent: Defender who scored vs Everton could now be "willing" to join

A free agent who has already proven himself in the Premier League earlier in his career could now be willing to make the move to Everton.

Garner reveals Everton's change in mentality

The Blues have won three of their opening three league games this season, with the early signs suggesting that positive times lie ahead under David Moyes.

Midfielder James Garner has impressed in the opening weeks of the campaign, scoring in the 2-0 win at home to Brighton, and he has spoken about a shift in mentality that has taken place at Everton under their manager.

“He said to us on day one that he’s not come here to take over a team that’s fighting against relegation – he said it again on day one of pre-season. He sets high standards and we know where we want to be.

“We’ve got a few more faces in over the summer and with the quality we have in the squad now, we all agree with the manager – if you want to achieve big things, then you’ve got to set your standards and your goals high. I think you can see it in us. There is a mentality shift. We’re playing with more confidence, going into games thinking how we are going to take all three points, it’s not just surviving.

“We’ve done that in these first few games. Obviously, the first game [against Leeds] felt like a blip, I don’t think we played well, but we’ve responded and now the aim is to keep building momentum. We want to keep winning and keep that winning mentality – that was the message in the changing room amongst all of us after the Wolves game.”

While Everton’s improvements this season are clear, it is also important that further quality is added to the squad, and they have now been linked with a move for a free agent.

"Brilliant" free agent could be keen on joining Everton

Speaking to Goodison News, former Toffees scout Bryan King talked up the idea of Everton signing left-back Sergio Reguilon on a free transfer, who could be “willing” to move to Merseyside.

“He’s a free transfer, so it would certainly be an option to look at. They’re a bit stretched across the whole defence at the moment, with Branthwaite’s injury concerns. I would imagine that Reguilon would be more than willing to go and join a club like Everton. It seems like Everton are moving in a forward direction, instead of being in a relegation fight.”

Reguilon could be a shrewd signing for Everton, especially with Vitalii Mykolenko picking up an injury prior to the international break, with the 28-year-old an experienced player.
