Chelsea eyeing "crazy" 4-2-3-1 boss who’d be a huge upgrade on Poch

The 2023/24 season has been a frustrating campaign for Chelsea, sitting in seventh in the table, on 54 points, having lost 11 games out of the 35 they've contested.

The Blues also remain trophyless this season, having suffered defeat in the Carabao Cup final in February against Liverpool, before falling at the semi-final stage against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

After such a disappointing term, it's understandable that questions are being asked about boss Mauricio Pochettino's future, with the club's league position not reflecting the £400m spent over the course of the last 12 months.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

It's a difficult position to have to try and gel a bunch of new players and expect immediate success, but owner Todd Boehly expects progress after such hefty spending.

Despite impressive victories against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the last week, the writing might already be on the wall for the Argentinian, with the club targeting a shock move for one of their former managers this summer.

Chelsea interested in shock move for former boss

After securing the club's second Champions League trophy, Thomas Tuchel cemented himself in Chelsea history – joining Roberto Di Matteo as the only two managers to win the European Cup for the club.

However, he was controversially dismissed back in September 2022, with the Blues rapidly declining after the German's departure – failing to secure any European football since he left Stamford Bridge.

Managers such as Graham Potter and Pochettino have tried to fill the void but failed, with the Blues potentially set for a reunion with their former boss this summer.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that he has two options ahead of next season after his departure from Bayern Munich, with Chelsea and Manchester United two of the potential destinations for the 50-year-old.

The Sky Germany reporter claims that Tuchel's in "loose contact" with the Red Devils ahead of the campaign, but remains fully focused on ending the season on a higher with Bayern, with a move back to Stamford Bridge still a possibility.

With Tuchel departing Munich at the end of the season, Boehly and co should be doing all they can to convince the former boss to return to the club, with the German a clear upgrade on Pochettino.

Why Tuchel would be an upgrade on Pochettino

Whilst the duo both operate with a traditional 4-2-3-1 system, it's clear from stats over the past couple of seasons that Tuchel would be a better fit for the Blues than their current manager.

When comparing the pair's points per game in 2023/24, the Bayern Munich boss clears the Argentinian, averaging 2.16 PPG, in comparison to Poch's measly total of just 1.54.

It's easier to say that the Bundesliga is a lower quality division than the Premier League, but during his time as Blues boss, the "crazy" Tuchel, as dubbed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, also averaged a higher win percentage than the current boss, with his 63%, 13% higher than Pochettino – who can only muster 50% during his first season at the club.

In his 18-month stint in England, the German also managed to win more trophies, whilst operating on a much smaller budget than his fellow manager, with Tuchel making a huge impact at the club despite his relatively brief spell in London.

Despite firing him over a year ago, the club need to push hard and make a bold call to re-hire Tuchel, with his system suiting the current crop of players, subsequently allowing the club to push for a return to European football and battle for more trophies after a couple of years drought.

Boehly could repeat Potter disaster by hiring 4-2-3-1 boss for Chelsea

The club should avoid hiring him to avoid another disaster.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

40-year-old Ronaldo is looking forward to a successful season with Al-Nassr where he will aim to finally win the coveted Saudi Pro League title, a trophy that has eluded him since his move to the Middle East as a free agent in January 2023. Al-Nassr have strengthened their squad by signing Ronaldo's national team-mate Joao Felix, while Kingsley Coman is on his way to join the Saudi giants.

Benjamin Sesko, Gianluigi Donnarumma and six players Man Utd should sign to keep Bruno Fernandes happy after 'lazy' criticism

The Red Devils' captain has demanded more signings before the season begins, and we've picked out some of those they should be looking to recruit

Bruno Fernandes had just picked up a trophy, but he was in no mood for celebration. Manchester United had sealed the Premier League Summer Series title after beating West Ham, Bournemouth and drawing with Everton, but the performance in Sunday's 2-2 draw with the Toffees had deflated the initial excitement that surrounded the Red Devils' pre-season tour, and Fernandes was not interested in beating around the bush.

He called out the attitude of some of his team-mates and made a call to United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make more signings before the real action begins, despite the club splashing out £133 million ($176m) on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha while failing to make any money back on player sales.

"Our performance wasn’t the best and we were a little bit lazy today. We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment," the United captain told .  [The squad] is improving. But it’s not the place it needs to be. I don’t want to take a dig at anyone, but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about.

"It was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that."

Fernandes comments will probably not have gone down well with Ratcliffe and United's other directors, but the midfielder, who resisted a hugely tempting offer from Al-Hilal earlier in the summer, was speaking the truth. His team still looked vulnerable in defence, in goal and in central midfield, and with no further investment in the squad it would be difficult to see how they can gatecrash the Premier League's top four next season and qualify for the Champions League, which should be the main objective.

So here, then, are the players United should be looking to sign before the transfer window shuts on September 1, if not before they kick-off their campaign against Arsenal on August 17:

  • Getty Images

    Benjamin Sesko

United lined up against Everton without a recognised centre-forward, and though they produced some thrilling attacking play in transition, they lacked a focal point in the middle. It is no secret, either, that the club want to sign another striker after Rasmus Hojlund only scored four Premier League goals last season, and that Benjamin Sesko is their top target.

United will face fierce competition from Newcastle for the Slovenian's signature, and he is set to cost in excess of £70m ($93m). Then again, there is little point in United investing so much in their attack without having a reliable striker leading it, and RB Leipzig hitman Sesko is the highest scoring player under the age of 23 in Europe's top five leagues.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Gianluigi Donnarumma

There have been a lot of questions about Andre Onana's suitability to remain United goalkeeper, even before he got injured in the first week of training and became a doubt for when the season begins. The Cameroon international is, though, still easily the best 'keeper within the squad, as Altay Bayindir looked shaky in the draw against Everton and Tom Heaton, who turns 40 next April, is unquestionably the third choice.

United were linked with Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez earlier in the summer, but he has been deemed to be too expensive to pursue. In the meantime, however, another renowned international goalkeeper has appeared in the shop window: Gianluigi Donnarumma is about to enter the last year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and has seen his status as Luis Enrique's No.1 challenged by the imminent arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

The gigantic Italian is the type of proven, serial-winning 'keeper Amorim appears to favour, and if his price drops further in the final weeks of the window, United would be advised to pounce.

  • Getty

    Morten Hjulmand

While United have spent big on their attack, they have neglected their midfield, and the Everton match underlined how lightweight they still are in the middle of the pitch. Kobbie Mainoo is a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he lacks the physical steel of some of his counterparts, whileManuel Ugarte, who gave the ball away for the Toffees' first goal, did not really convince in his first season in the Premier League. Indeed, Amorim left him out of the team for the Europa League final against Tottenham.

And there is a face very familiar to the coach who is shaping up as a tempting option. Morten Hjulmand was the player Amorim signed to replace Ugarte at Sporting CP in 2023 when the Uruguayan left for PSG, and Hjulmand helped the Lisbon side win back-to-back Portuguese league titles.

The Denmark international would have no trouble fitting into the coach's system and would be available for around £40m ($53m). The only concern is that his passing statistics were far lower during Sporting's games in the Champions League and that he could struggle to adapt to the intensity of Premier League, just as Ugarte has done.

    Carlos Baleba

Given Amorim's preference for signing Premier League-ready players such as Mbeumo and Cunha, a move for Carlos Baleba of Brighton would present a lower risk than Hjulmand. The Cameroon international schooled Mainoo and Ugarte in the Seagulls' 3-1 win at Old Trafford last season, the same game which led Amorim to smash a television in the dressing room in anger afterwards.

Baleba would cost in the region of £70m ($93m), but former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes it is a price worth paying, even at the expense of signing a centre-forward like Sesko.

"Would I get a number nine I'm not sure about, who's a bit young, inexperienced, or would I get Baleba with Premier League experience and know what he can do here? I'm going Baleba, sorry," Ferdinand said on his Youtube channel. "I think he'll have a huge impact on this squad, on this team. You free up a few people in that midfield area as well to have a little less responsibility defensively because I think he's all-action. He can do it all."

Sold for £500k: Kane isn’t the only PL icon Arsenal will regret letting go

With a sharp twist of a Bavarian knife, Arsenal’s Champions League fairytale is done and dusted.

It has been a campaign full of learning curves for a squad that had reached the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 14 years. That’s a hell of a stat, isn’t it?

That inexperience certainly told against Bayern Munich.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have been far from perfect this season. They have missed out on winning the Bundesliga crown for the first time in 11 years. The winners? Granit Xhaka’s Bayer Leverkusen.

That said, in the Champions League Bayern are a different animal and their European pedigree shone through, notably on Wednesday night.

Truth be told, the damage was done at the Emirates nine days ago. A lapse in concentration from Gabriel and Jakub Kiwior led to Serge Gnabry finding the net before a clumsy challenge from William Saliba meant Harry Kane scored from the spot. Who else?

Arsenal rallied to seal a 2-2 draw but the second leg was a nervy affair that Mikel Arteta’s men never got into. It said a lot that star man Bukayo Saka couldn’t even create a single chance, nor did he have an effort on goal.

Joshua Kimmich’s goal was ultimately the difference as Kane and Co scampered off into the night with a semi-final place beckoning.

It will sting that Gnabry scored in the first leg – once of Arsenal colours – as too will the fact that Spurs’ record scorer found the net against them yet again.

On another day he’d have been turning out in the red or green of the Gunners.

Why Harry Kane left Arsenal

After goal upon goal was scored by the striker during his time with Tottenham, the adoring fans would sing one thing: “He’s one of our own!”

Except that’s not strictly true, is it? Kane actually rose through the ranks at Arsenal, playing in the Hale End academy before being let go as a boy.

harry-kane-transfer-tottenham-hotspur-luis-suarez-barcelona-redknapp-postecoglou

It’s a tale of woe as far as the Gunners are concerned. The likes of Gnabry and Wojciech Szczesny may have moved onto greater pastures after being brought up through the academy in north London but there is perhaps no greater slip through the net than Kane.

So, why did they let him go? Well, the man behind the decision, Roy Massey, once told talkSPORT: “To release Harry Kane…we don’t have a crystal ball. If we did then we would be successful in every youngster that we take on.

“Harry was a lovely young player. He was quiet, shy, didn't have what we thought it would take to become a professional footballer and so we were totally mistaken."

It’s a moment in Kane’s career as a football that’s helped him become the man he is today.

He told the Telegraph that his rejection from Arsenal has only left him with a point to prove:

“I am the type of player who, throughout my career, has had points to prove along the way. I don’t think that ever leaves you. It will always be in my DNA, until I retire. There will always be a reason to prove someone wrong or to prove myself I can do something.

Harry Kane scores for Tottenham.

“I don’t think specifically back to that and think ‘I was released when I was nine years old, I really have to make a difference tomorrow.’ Now I am at Bayern Munich it is about being a top team in the Champions League. Of course I have history with them [Arsenal], but all I can do is try to help Bayern Munich.”

Well, the 30-year-old has now certainly left the decision-makers in N5 eating humble pie.

Kane scored 280 goals for Spurs during his time in the capital and came within a couple of seasons of beating Alan Sheerer to the honour of the Premier League’s all-time record scorer. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also found the net on 39 occasions since his mega-money move to Munich.

He’s not the first to be let go at a young age, however, nor will he be the last. There is one more notable example though and he’s a Manchester United hero.

Arsenal let a Man Utd legend slip through the cracks

Kane will undoubtedly go down as one of Arsenal's biggest mishaps but their decision to get rid of a certain Andy Cole in 1992 should certainly sting those associated with the club in that era.

Cole resided in the club's academy during the latter stages of the 1980s before becoming professional in 1989 after leaving school.

Sadly for the forward, he only played once for the first team, appearing as a substitute in a First Division clash with Sheffield United in 1990.

Having failed to made the grade in north London, the forward moved to Bristol City in 1992 in a deal worth just £500,000, albeit that was a record fee for the Robins at the time.

A productive spell there ultimately saw Newcastle swoop in for his signature where he began his rise to becoming a true Premier League phenomenon. Having once again moved for a club's record fee, Cole was sublime in the northeast, scoring 68 goals in 83 appearances.

What happened next? A move to Manchester United where the Arsenal academy product would score 121 times in 275 outings. An undoubted Old Trafford icon, he helped the Red Devils win five Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League for good measure.

Hanging up his boots in 2008, Cole did so having found the net on 187 occasions in the Premier League, enough to now rank him fourth on the all-time list. He sits 26 behind the aforementioned Kane, although it's safe to say there's only one winner when it comes to their haul of trophies.

Said to have been "fantastic from day one" by the great Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsenal would no doubt have been kicking themselves that they let Cole slip through the net.

During his time with United, there was a real rivalry between the two clubs and it's undoubted that the Gunners would have been better off with him in their team. Sadly they did not learn from the error of their ways, subsequently allowing another Premier League icon in Kane to depart years later.

West Ham make approach to sign defender tipped to become "one of the best"

West Ham have made an out-of-window approach to sign one defender who's been tipped to become one of the best in world football.

West Ham eyeing new centre-back amid Aguerd and Zouma concerns

The Hammers and technical director Tim Steidten are being more regularly linked with signing a new centre-half this summer.

Concerns surround the ability of current mainstay Nayef Aguerd, who has been prone to the odd error this season and has often been subject to inconsistent displays alongside partner Kurt Zouma.

“It felt like one of those days from West Ham, defensively they were all over the shot. This is Aguerd on the ball, trying to play, there’s no urgency, there’s no movement," said pundit Shay Given on Match Of The Day after their 5-0 defeat to Fulham.

“Nobody’s sticking a tackle in, there’s nobody getting tight to people. Look at Willian, look how much space he has on the ball and again, it’s a free shot on the edge of the box from Iwobi. Pereira cuts it back, with no clearance in the middle of the box.

“I know it’s a Sunday, but you’d see it on a Sunday morning sometimes at Sunday League football.”

Nayef Aguerd for West Ham.

Both Zouma and Aguerd are thought to be attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, and if West Ham opt to do business with Middle Eastern sides over the duo, then their backline could look pretty different next season.

West Ham actually agreed a deal to sign Harry Maguire from Man United last summer, but the England international opted against a move to east London, with David Moyes instead turning to Konstantinos Mavropanos.

West Ham have conceded five-plus goals in a game on multiple occasions this term, which has been a real cause for concern as Steidten looks to add more star quality.

Tosin Adarabioyo has attracted West Ham interest as he nears the end of his Fulham contract, while some reports suggest that Steidten is keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

Another good option, according to Italian journalist Mirko Di Natale is Juventus defender Dean Huijsen.

West Ham make Dean Huijsen approach

Indeed, according to Di Natale, West Ham are among the sides who've made an approach for Huijsen ahead of this summer.

Dean Huijsen in action for Roma.

Currently on loan at Roma, the young Dutchman is already garnering quite a reputation, with Daniele De Rossi tipping him to become one of the best defenders in world football.

“Huijsen is becoming more and more mature. He does a lot. He’s very smart,” the 2006 World Cup winner told ESPN. “He doesn’t look 18-years-old on the field. He knows what he is doing. But sometimes a little too well. (Huijsen) is good with the ball at his feet, but sometimes a little too calm.

“I think he needs to learn some more ‘Italian tricks’ in his own box. If he does that, he will become one of the best players in the world.”

Tim Steidten already eyeing Kalvin Phillips replacement at West Ham

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten and the club are "increasingly keen" to sign a named midfielder, with Kalvin Phillips looking very likely to make a return to Man City this summer.

Kalvin Phillips criticised amid horror loan spell at West Ham

To perhaps sum up the former Leeds star's torrid time in east London so far, England boss Gareth Southgate has moved to drop Phillips from his England squad in what is a bitter blow for him.

West Ham signing Eddie Nketiah now possible as Arsenal make decision

The Hammers are a serious destination for him.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 17, 2024

Usually a fixture of the national team's starting eleven, the 28-year-old's poor club form prompted Southgate to make the very difficult decision to omit him from contention for their upcoming friendly games against Brazil and Belgium.

"I think he knows exactly what we think of him," said Southgate on Phillips.

"A good version of him is an important player for us, and that’s why we’ve supported him as we have. Unfortunately, his form hasn’t been good enough and I’ve spoken to him about that. He understands.

“He has all the attributes to force his way back in. He just needs to find that rhythm and confidence because there is an outstanding player in there.”

The West Ham midfielder, after scarcely getting a look-in for Man City, joined David Moyes' side on a temporary deal in January. Starting three games and making a further three appearances off the bench, Phillips has been criticised for his form at West Ham, with pundit Stan Collymore perhaps summing it up best.

I don’t think anyone is really surprised the 28-year-old hasn’t been included," said Collymore to Caught Offside.

"His form has dropped off a cliff since he joined West Ham at the start of the year. He’s had an absolute nightmare. He has a token treble but there is no way he’s getting back into that England squad in time for the Euros in the summer, so was it really worth it? What would he rather have? — A treble of winners’ medals that he didn’t really contribute toward, or the chance to represent England, and potentially win the country’s first piece of major international silverware since 1966?”

Steidten increasingly keen on Mandela Keita

According to GiveMeSport, Moyes is unlikely to push the West Ham hierarchy into pursuing a permanent deal for Phillips, and they're already eyeing a potential replacement.

Indeed, it is believed Steidten is keeping a close watch on Royal Antwerp midfielder Mandela Keita, and West Ham are increasingly keen on the idea of bringing him in.

Arsenal ready move to sign Man City player who could be Ben White 2.0

da pixbet: After deciding against signing anyone in the January transfer window, the summer could be a big one for Arsenal.

da roleta: Back in 2023 they spent a considerable amount on bolstering the squad, notably bringing in £65m Kai Havertz and £105m Declan Rice.

Where has that got them? Well, they're top of the Premier League and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It's hard to suggest they weren't worth the money.

So, what does 2024 have in store? It's likely they'll go big on a new star striker with Ivan Toney one name who refuses to go away. But who else?

Arsenal's transfer targets for 2024

It was reported back in January that Toney was a player Arsenal wanted to do a deal for but perhaps with Kai Havertz's form in recent weeks, they'll look to spend big elsewhere.

Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest was linked with a move over the weekend but a fresh name coming from the rumour mill concerns Joao Cancelo.

That's according to The Sun who reported on Saturday that the Gunners are ready to make their move for the defender if Barcelona don't sign the player permanently.

Cancelo is currently on loan at Barca from Manchester City after falling out with Pep Guardiola. The Portuguese would prefer to stay in Catalonia but Arsenal could be an interesting proposition for the player considering Mikel Arteta's tactics.

How Joao Cancelo compares to Ben White

Signing Cancelo would be a particularly eye-catching addition from Edu and Co.

The 29-year-old is in the prime of his career and crucially for Arteta, is not only a versatile individual but also a player capable of adapting to his system. Why? Well, Cancelo is the classic example of an inverted full-back.

Statman Dave described the Man City star as "the perfect inverted wing-back" during his days in England and that ability to push into midfield would make him an ideal addition this summer.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has been an expert in that role since signing for the Gunners but his authority as a starter is now dwindling. Previously criticised for being a "liability" in defensive situations, the Ukrainian may bring composure and technical ability but Arsenal can do better. The very fact Jakub Kiwior – not typically a full-back – has now displaced him says it all.

On the opposite side of the defence, Ben White is improving all the time, notably registering two assists and a goal in his last two league games. Once a central defender, the £50m signing has taken a leaf from Zinchenko's book and with the former Man City man out of action, has been the inverted defender in this team.

Well, should Cancelo arrive then he could perform that job just as well. Vitally for White, he can also operate at left-back.

Throughout his career to date the Barca loanee has been seen 217 times on the right and 103 times from the left. On that note, he's a bit like Arsenal's current options Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber.

So, we know Cancelo can invert but what else does he offer? Previously celebrated as "the best player in the Premier League" by journalist Muhammad Butt, he ranks in the top 10% of positionally similar players in Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions, the best 1% for successful take-ons (dribbles), and the top 9% for progressive passes, all per 90 minutes.

Afghanistan's chance to prove they're no pushovers in Tests

No side has won three of their first four Tests. Afghanistan have a chance to change all that

The Preview by Sreshth Shah26-Nov-2019

Big pictureDon’t let Afghanistan’s two-day loss on their Test debut against India fool you. Incidentally then, Phil Simmons was their head coach. Today, he’s in the opposition camp, perhaps with a bank of knowledge he’d want to share with his West Indies team. Since that insipid debut, of course, Afghanistan have beaten Ireland in India and Bangladesh in Bangladesh. If they beat West Indies in Lucknow, they’ll become the only team in the history of the sport to win three of their first four Tests. The possibility is real. Under captain Rashid Khan, who has taken three five-wicket hauls in his last four Test innings, Afghanistan will run into a wonky West Indies batting line-up. The win in the T20I series should boost the ‘hosts’ to that effect. In their last three Tests, only twice have the West Indies batsmen gone past fifty. On a ground that is hosting it’s maiden Test, there are a lot of unknown variables, not least of all the pitch. Against a spin-based attack, West Indies will be tested. That said, Afghanistan would also do well to worry about their batting weakness. Barring Rahmat Shah, few have shown the tenacity to bat long. In both of Afghanistan’s Test wins, Rahmat’s contributions have been as integral as Rashid’s. But with senior allrounder Mohammad Nabi having retired from Tests, someone else too needs to step up.For West Indies, the series is about showing that they aren’t falling behind in the red-ball format. For Afghanistan, it’s time to say that, they too, possess the quality to find a spot in the next cycle of the World Test Championship.Form Guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightIt appears that the job of filling the Nabi void has been given to 21-year-old allrounder Karim Janat, who has earned a Test berth after a splendid T20I series against West Indies. He struck an 18-ball 26 and picked up 5 for 11 in the second game before finishing the series with 1 for 33 in the third. He can find speeds of 140kph regularly, and with his elder brother Asghar Afghan there for company, Janat can find an arm around him for comfort, instead of being intimidated by the prospects of a main Test appearance. The form that made Kraigg Brathwaite ESPNcricinfo’s opener of the year in 2016 has gradually diminished as the decade comes to a close. He’s gone 19 innings without a Test fifty, and since February 2019, his only first-class century was one for Glamorgan in the English County Championship. It’s West Indies’ last Test match of the year, and with no other Test till they face England in June 2020, the team’s seniormost batsmen will ache to end 2019 with an impactful performance.Getty Images

Team newsAfghanistan coach Lance Klusener said it would be desirable to keep faith with the XI that won the Test in Bangladesh, though they’ll have to find a replacement for the retired Mohammad Nabi of course. Given the way Karim Janat performed in the T20Is, and that he offers an all-round option, he could well be the man to replace Nabi, even though he bowls seam up rather than spin. Afghanistan having plenty of spin options already with Rashid, Qais and Zahir.Afghanistan XI (probable): Ibrahim Zadran, Ihsanullah, Rahmat Shah, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Afghan, Karim Janat, Afsar Zazai (wk), Rashid Khan (capt), Qais Ahmed, Yamin Ahmadzai, Zahir Khan.Rahkheem Cornwall had an ice-pack strapped to his left knee and didn’t take part in the warm-up drills or training session for West Indies. Coach Phil Simmons, however, said a final call on Cornwall would be taken only on the morning of the match. John Campbell is recovering from a stomach bug.West Indies XI (probable): Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell/Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (capt), Shane Dowrich (wk), Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican/Alzarri Joseph.Pitch and conditionsThe match will be played on the same surface as the second ODI was played on. It’s a red-soil pitch, and is expected to aid spin bowling. Expect foggy mornings at the onset of winters up north in India. As such, conditions for red-ball cricket is relatively unknown at the ground, with only three first-class games being played at Lucknow since 2017.Stats and trivia In the last three first-class games at Lucknow, an average of 2 centuries and 3.33 half-centuries have been witnessed per match With 333 runs, Jason Holder is West Indies’ highest run-scorer in 2019, averaging over 55 runs per innings. The second-highest run-scorer, Roston Chase, is more than 100 runs behind Holder. Rashid Khan averages 18 runs per wicket in TestsWhat they said”Obviously one day I’d like to play at ‘home’ home, but this is home away from home for us. The surfaces have suited us, and that’s the important thing if you’re going to have home advantage”.
“They’ve had three Tests, and did well to win in Bangladesh, but it’s still a learning phase for them and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”
