Celtic could lose "fantastic" Rodgers ace as contract talks reach stalemate

Despite such an emphatic start to the campaign, Celtic could yet be dealt a major blow after contract talks with one of Brendan Rodgers’ star men reportedly reached a stalemate.

Celtic contract news

Top of the Scottish Premiership, Celtic have so far enjoyed the perfect week after following up their thrashing of title rivals Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup with an even more impressive result against RB Leipzig in the Champions League. Shocking the Bundesliga side, Nicolas Kuhn was the star of the show, scoring twice in Celtic’s 3-1 victory.

Making unexpected progress among Europe’s elite, Celtic are one of several sides benefitting from the new Champions League format in pursuit of causing further upsets throughout the current campaign.

Even as that progress goes on, however, it may be all good news for Rodgers and his side with the January transfer window on the horizon. After losing Matt O’Riley in the summer, the last thing that the Scottish champions will want is for another star player to leave. Yet, reports suggest they may have little choice.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are now at risk of losing Greg Taylor with contract talks reaching a stalemate. The left-back’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and he will be free to commence negotiations over a summer switch when January arrives.

A mainstay under Rodgers, Taylor’s exit would be a major blow, especially after the Celtic boss admitted that a new contract for the full-back was among the Bhoys’ priorities at the start of the campaign.

Rodgers wants "fantastic" Taylor stay

The Celtic boss told reporters, as relayed by Sky Sports: “I really hope that we can get something organised on that. He’s a fantastic player for us. How he makes that position work how we want it to look, he’s first class.

“He knows we really want him to stay and hopefully between his representatives and the club we can organise that because he is a player that I really rate. I have seen him grow here from the outside looking in and obviously having the chance to work with him now for over a season. I really like everything about Greg. I love his personality, I love his spirit, I love how he plays the game of course.

“He plays the game like a midfield player coming from that outside position in, so he really makes it difficult for the opposition. Technically strong. For what you’d say small in stature he competes in his duels, he wins headers.

“He does a lot of really, really good things in the game which I really like and really appreciate. So I really hope that we can tie him down. In this period now he would be a real priority for us to try and get something sorted.”

A couple of months down the line, however, and that new deal is far from sorted. In fact, it seems as though things are worryingly heading in the opposite direction and towards the exit door next summer.

Sean Dickson scores Stokes-like second ton to set up Durham victory push

Two centuries in the match for Sean Dickson, the second of them a rip-roaring affair made at a pace that only Ben Stokes has ever outdone in Durham’s history, and then only on the previous day, have prepared the ground for Durham to secure their first win of the season at the fifth attempt, an overdue reward for a county that was strongly fancied to be contesting the promotion places at the beginning of the season.Durham need eight wickets on the final day to beat Worcestershire, who are still 357 runs adrift, but any regular county cricket observers who have alighted on the competition for the first time this summer need to be brought up to date: that task is no longer as straightforward as it was once.Durham’s task is also compounded by the fact that the workload of Stokes, England’s new captain, their champion allrounder and therefore a tough guy who is regarded as vulnerable as porcelain, must be managed on his first appearance of the season. “Put overs into the legs of the Durham bowlers,” was the understandable policy of the Worcestershire dressing room. It was just that… there’s a tough England summer ahead, can’t you go a little easy?Related

  • Robinson five-for, Pujara hundred maintain control for Sussex

Stokes has set up their victory push, alongside Dickson, with his breathtaking 161 from 88 balls on the second day, which delighted all who saw it, apart from Kevin Pietersen, who demanded the emergency introduction of franchise cricket, but it is questionable whether he will be able to finish off the job with the ball.England’s official instructions to their pace attack on the rare occasions they play county cricket are apparently not quite as prescriptive as once they were. Either they have happily adopted a less authoritarian approach or they just know that the likes of Stokes, James Anderson and Stuart Broad have the strength of mind to prepare themselves for Test cricket much as they see fit. But everybody knows there must be limits. If there is no likelihood therefore that Stokes’ phone will ping at breakfast on the final day advising him to bowl 12 overs in three four-over bursts, unless the wind is from a northerly direction, in which case the number of overs allowed should be divided by the moisture content of the pitch measured at hourly intervals, they may prefer instead to send an ambitious middle manager, armed with a Bluetooth-enabled microphone, to yell in his direction if he gets carried away.Such a recourse may be necessary because Durham could face an exacting day to force victory at New Road and confirm themselves as worthy promotion challengers. The pitch showed signs of unevenness for the new ball, and Chris Rushworth, who has had a tough season, took advantage by removing both Worcestershire openers, but it could easily go flat. With respect to Liam Trevaskis they do not have a spinner of repute, and the workhorse seamer – Ben Raine – stood down for Stokes in this match. At 169 for 6 when play resumed, the arrears still a monumental 411 runs, Worcestershire’s second innings might have been expected to run aground fairly quickly. But this is 2022, where batters have strutted their stuff and even the tailenders have done a good impression of the same. Joe Leach’s defiant 62 was the main component as Worcestershire batted the same amount of time again and, after a best-ignored but professionally-impressive sequence when the last pair blocked for 40 minutes without a run, their stand worth 29 in 19 overs, they were only one ball short of 100 overs when they were dismissed for 309.Matthew Potts finished with 6 for 62•Getty Images

Matthew Potts tacked on the wicket of Ben Cox to register 6 for 62 in a season where he has been one of the standout quick bowlers on predominately benign pitches. It should be conceded, however, that the number of quality fast bowlers jostling for attention would barely fill a phone box, especially as these days most of the room is already taken up by defibrillators or Ken Follett novels. In the circumstances, Scott Borthwick’s decision to give his bowlers a breather, and bat again, made sense and he could no have been happier with the outcome as Dickson recorded his second hundred of the match, Alex Lees (with less of the strike) added an unbeaten 60 and Durham declared after 21.3 overs at 170 for 1.Worcestershire spent much of the time employing white-ball tactics, to no great effect as Durham scored at a rate that they only manage occasionally in T20 itself. They also got Josh Baker, their 18-year-old left-arm spinner, back into the game as early as the seventh over after his 34-run mauling from Stokes on the previous day. Dickson reverse swept his first ball for four and later deposited a full toss so far that the ball was never found. After a lengthy delay, Baker bounced back with the replacement, beat the outside edge but Cox missed the stumping. Character-forming stuff, which is always a disturbing phrase.Dickson’s century rattled along in only 69 balls, which would have been the fastest hundred in Durham’s history had not Stokes managed one in 64 balls in the first innings. “I did realise when I was on about 60 that I was in with a chance of the fastest century for Durham but they kept bowling really wide down the leg side. I was going for it. It wasn’t to be.”Stokes’ hundred gained widespread media attention, whereas Dickson (and this report is culpable) will do well to get a nod of recognition. Such is the life of the respected but largely unsung county pro. He struck eight sixes on his way to his fourth century of the season and third in successive innings. He is having an outstanding season with this hundred giving him 729 runs at an average of 81 and taking him beyond Derbyshire’s Shan Masood as the leading run-maker in either division of the Championship. He will doubtless feel miffed that runs are so plentiful that his efforts may not receive the notice they deserve. That’s county cricket, but on a golden Spring evening at New Road it was still a wonderful place for any person of imagination to be.

Finch praises Ellis and Inglis as Australia showcase their depth

Captain Aaron Finch predicts the future is bright for Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis after the inexperienced pair played a vital role in Australia’s one-off T20 international win against Pakistan in Lahore.Australia were missing David Warner, Mitch Marsh, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from the side that won the T20 World Cup, as well as regular squad members Kane Richardson and Jhye Richardson, who both played in Australia’s last T20I series against Sri Lanka. But the inexperienced side, that featured three T20I debutants in Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green and Ben Dwarshuis, got the better of Pakistan by three wickets.Green and Ellis wrestled the game back in Australia’s favour taking 6 for 44 between them after Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan plundered 63 runs in the first seven overs without loss.Ellis took career-best figures of 4 for 28 in just his third T20I, with Finch predicting he has a bright future at the international level.”He’s someone who brings an unbelievable attitude, an unbelievable work ethic to games and training,” Finch said.”His energy, his intensity, his ability to learn really quickly, whether it be with the new ball, old ball, talking to experienced players, coaches, he’s just got an amazing attitude that he brings to the table.”And he’s someone that the boys love playing with.”When he turns up, he’s just got an infectious attitude that he brings and he’s just one of [those] guys that will have a super future because he’s prepared to challenge himself each and every day, which is a great sign, especially from a guy who hasn’t had a huge amount of international experience.”Related

  • McDonald backs Finch to regain form heading towards T20 World Cup

Inglis kept wicket for the first time in T20I cricket having played his previous five games as a batter. He made a valuable 24 off 15 batting at No.3, which was made even more impressive by the fact that he carried the drinks throughout the Test series and then missed the entire ODI series because of a Covid-19 positive test that forced him to isolate in his hotel room.”He’s been fantastic,” Finch said of Inglis. “Nothing seems to faze him. The attitude that he brings out in the middle is brilliant. It’s good fun batting with him. He’s somebody who again takes in so much information and his ability to walk out of a hotel room after seven days of isolation and start off really well was outstanding.”And he’s just someone again, like Nathan Ellis, the guys love being around and love having him in squads. He’s a super player. He’s got so much talent as well. So yeah, I’ve been really impressed with Josh.”Aaron Finch acknowledges his half-century•AFP/Getty Images

Finch himself made a nice return to form scoring 55 off 45 balls to guide Australia home in the chase. Finch had gone 16 international innings without a half-century, including 13 T20Is, and had posted nine single-figure scores in that period culminating in back-to-back ducks to finish the recent ODI series. Coach Andrew McDonald had backed the skipper to come good 24 hours earlier and Finch repaid the faith.Finch used his feet to advance at the quicks early in his innings but then settled into a different set-up thereafter, keeping his left leg planted well outside leg stump to avoid getting trapped lbw.”It’s something that I tend to do,” Finch said. “It’s after my initial eight to 10 balls, when you start to get a bit more of a rhythm that I tend to go to that one. Especially, when guys are angling in and attacking the stumps quite a bit more on low bouncing wickets in particular.”I should have gone to it earlier, shouldn’t I.”But it’s just one of those things. I mean, you get knocked over early. Today the wicket played really nicely against the new ball. There probably wasn’t quite as much swing initially. So, yeah, slight tinkering with technique, but that’s nothing uncommon.”

England look for improved fielding against India to keep World Cup dream alive

England will be looking for a vastly improved performance in the field against India to keep their World Cup hopes alive.Another defeat would mean England have to rely on other, unlikely, results going their way to reach the semi-finals. They must also eradicate a rash of missed chances which cost them in a seven-run loss to West Indies and Monday’s three-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa.England are yet to record a victory at this tournament so far, having also lost their opening match against Australia to sit seventh on the table, with Pakistan the only team below them.Wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who returned to form with the bat to score a half-century against South Africa, acknowledged that a better showing in the field on Wednesday would be crucial – they missed five chances against West Indies and dropped three catches against South Africa with Jones missing a stumping off Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 77.However, while the stakes are high and honest discussions had taken place in the England camp about those errors, Jones added that it was important to strike a balance between sharpening up and placing too much pressure on the fielders in the next match, which could have obvious adverse consequences.Related

“After the West Indies game, we dropped and missed a lot of chances, so we spoke about that as a group, obviously not wanting to put a huge amount of pressure on the first opportunity that comes in the next game,” Jones said.”We just spoke about how we wanted to be really positive, really supportive of each other out there and just do the little things right like attacking the ball, fizzing it in to me, getting just some good energy going and hoping that the chances will be taken from that. We know our skill level is good enough to take those chances.”Then it was unfortunate that we missed a few again last night, but I think with the games coming so quick, you have to look individually if there’s any quick learnings you can make but in terms the whole team, it’s just so important that we keep supporting each other, we keep the energy high in the field. We do play our best and we’re enjoying it, we’re supporting each other, having a bit of a laugh, so I think that’s the kind of mood we want to create when we go out there.”Jones’ 53 against South Africa came during a century stand with Tammy Beaumont for the third wicket and was her first ODI fifty since she scored 60 against New Zealand last September. In five one-day innings in between, Jones’ highest score was 28 against Australia in Melbourne during the Ashes last month and prior to that knock against the White Ferns, she had passed 30 just twice in 13 ODI innings.”I’ve been quite short of runs recently so it was a bit of a relief to be honest,” Jones said. “I didn’t change a huge amount.”I’d been struggling to rotate the strike early on in the first few games and then sort of putting a bit of unnecessary pressure on myself, so basically going into the last game, I was just trying to stay relaxed at the crease, still trust my timing and not try and force it if there were a few dots. It was great to get going into my innings and to have that partnership with Tam.”Jones said the fact they were playing their second match in a row at Mount Maunganui would benefit England, who would take “some learnings” from the South Africa game, although India have also played at the ground recently, defeating Pakistan by 107 there in their World Cup opener. Also informative would be the 2-1 ODI series victory over India on their multi-format tour during the English summer, which England won by 10 points to six.”It definitely gives confidence,” Jones said. “When you play any team, it’s quite natural to look back at the last games that you played against them and so to have that fairly recent success against them I think as a group will definitely give us confidence.”India have dropped one of their three World Cup matches so far, losing by 62 runs to New Zealand, who also won their ODI series 4-1 immediately before the tournament.Australia’s seven-wicket win against West Indies overnight could help England’s cause, pulling the Windies back to two wins and two losses from four games after they got off to a flying start, upsetting New Zealand and then beating England.West Indies, New Zealand and India are all locked mid-table on four points, although victory for India on Wednesday would pull them clear of the other two. After India, England play New Zealand, whom they defeated 4-1 in ODIs at home late last year, followed by Pakistan and Bangladesh, ranked eighth and sixth on the ICC’s ODI team rankings respectively, although – as seventh-ranked West Indies have already shown – danger can lurk in any opponent at this World Cup.

Wow: Ashworth now in Man Utd talks to sign £16.9m-a-year star after Ugarte

New Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth has reportedly opened talks over another high-profile signing after Manuel Ugarte.

Romano teases “last-minute” Man Utd signing after Ugarte

The Red Devils are set to make Ugarte their fifth signing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first window as co-owner, with INEOS backing manager Erik ten Hag with a number of big-money deals.

A deal between Man Utd and Paris Saint-Germain was agreed on Tuesday, with Ugarte set to cost just over £50m – a €50m initial fee followed by €10m in fixed add-ons.

However, the Uruguay international might not be the final player through the Old Trafford door, with Fabrizio Romano telling GiveMeSport there could still be time for a “last minute” incoming.

"In terms of other business, it will depend. Maybe some player leaves, there could still be space for something last-minute for Manchester United. Nothing 100% confirmed yet, so Man United will decide [this] week based on opportunities, but I would keep the door always open for last-minute opportunities."

Now, it looks as if that last-minute signing could be Raheem Sterling from Chelsea, with a new development emerging.

Ashworth opens talks to sign Sterling for Man Utd

According to The Telegraph, Man Utd have opened talks to sign Sterling in a deal that could see Jadon Sancho head to Stamford Bridge, although the latter could also move to Juventus. The report claims that Ashworth opened dialogue with Chelsea on Tuesday but the Red Devils will only progress on a deal on their own terms.

Raheem Sterling

Both Sancho and Sterling appear to be surplus to requirements at their own clubs, with Blues head coach Enzo Maresca saying on Sterling after leaving him out of their Premier League opener with Manchester City:

"I spoke with Raheem one-on-one the day before City and I explained him exactly the situation. I didn't see Raheem after the game. He is training apart, as I said, but in case I sit with Raheem, I will tell him exactly the same things that I already told him. I don't have anything new to tell him because I was quite clear."

The 29-year-old, on £325,000-a-week which works out at £16.9m-a-year, has made 379 Premier League appearances in total, scoring 123 goals and providing 62 assists, turning out for Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea.

He’d therefore provide Ten Hag with plenty of experience at the highest level and is also able to turn out on either wing or through the middle if required. Man Utd could potentially be his next destination after talks were held, making this one to keep an eye on in the final days of the market.

10x possession lost: Slot must drop 6-pass Liverpool dud after Forest loss

Liverpool fell to a shock defeat against Nottingham Forest at Anfield after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s 72nd-minute strike secured all three points for the visitors.

The defeat was the Reds’ first under Arne Slot after the Dutchman took over from Jürgen Klopp during the summer, conceding the first goal this season in the process.

It was a disappointing display for Slot’s side, having over 70% possession and 14 efforts on goal, but were unable to find a way through Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

Within the side, numerous players failed to make an impact during the outing, failing to replicate the performances produced against the likes of Manchester United, Brentford and Ipswich.

Today was only the fourth league outing of the season, but it did highlight numerous issues that need to be addressed over the coming weeks if they are to have a successful first season during his reign.

Slot’s first test as Liverpool boss

Up to now, it’s all been positive for new boss Slot at the helm, winning all the competitive matches during his start to life at Anfield.

Today was the first time since his appointment that they conceded a goal – an example of how well he’s taken to life in charge of the Merseyside outfit – but it poses a real question for the new boss as to how his side will bounce back from the shock defeat.

His side struggled to break down Forest’s low block, often playing at the intensity needed to drag Espírito Santo’s side out of possession and exploit the spaces in behind.

The Tricky Trees certainly won’t be the last side to go to Anfield and implement such a system, with Slot’s side needing to work on their intensity in possession against such sides if they are to challenge for the title this season.

He certainly wasn’t helped by the number of poor performances produced by multiple first-team members, with one player, in particular, looking poor throughout, with the Dutchman needing to replace him ahead of the club’s next outing.

Why Slot needs to drop Liverpool ace after Forest defeat

The game against Forest was always going to be a tricky one for Liverpool, with Espírito Santo’s side willing to forfeit the ball and sit in a low block and hit them on the counter-attack.

Hudson-Odoi’s goal was an example of the system the visitors implemented, but striker Diogo Jota was unable to make his own impact as a result – struggling in possession when he found space amid the defensive line.

The Portuguese forward featured for 60 minutes during the defeat, having three shots but only placing one on target and missing one big chance in the process.

Diogo Jota and Arne Slot

The 27-year-old also lost four of the six duels that he entered, often looking lacklustre for Slot’s side, with his performance deserving of him being replaced ahead of the club’s trip to face AC Milan on Tuesday.

Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo were also unable to make their own impact off the bench after being brought on to make a difference, but after Jota’s display, Slot could turn to either of the two aforementioned players to take his spot in midweek.

Crystal Palace now agree deal to sign "excellent" £50,000-p/w Guehi partner

After fending off interest from Newcastle United to keep hold of Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign a new partner for the England international.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles have endured a mixed summer. Whilst they have managed to keep hold of Eberechi Eze and Guehi, despite a number of hefty reported bids from Newcastle, they did have to bid farewell to both Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise to Fulham and Bayern Munich respectively.

Fabrizio Romano: Crystal Palace agree £15m+ deal to sign "elite" new player

It could be a busy end to the window at Selhurst Park.

ByCharlie Smith Aug 29, 2024

Having welcomed the likes of Maxence Lacroix and Daichi Kamada in between, however, they should sum up the last few months as fairly successful.

After putting pen to paper to complete a move from Wolfsburg, Lacroix told Palace's official website: "It’s like a dream for a young football player. I’m really happy to be here and arrive at this good team.

“I watched Palace’s last games and I was really happy for the coach, because I’d played under him before. I think it’s the right moment to move to the Premier League.”

Following his arrival, it wouldn't be absurd to suggest that the London club were done on the defensive incomings front. But that's far from the case. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Crystal Palace have reached an agreement to sign Trevoh Chalobah on loan from London rivals Chelsea for a small fee on deadline day.

The defender was among those frozen out at Stamford Bridge and told to find a move if he wants minutes this season. And with that being the case, Palace have stepped up to land a loan move without an obligation or option to buy next summer.

"Excellent" Chalobah can form formidable Guehi partnership

It's easy to forget just how sold a centre-back Chalobah is due to how he's been cast aside under Enzo Maresca. Earning a reported £50k-a-week, Chelsea academy graduate is someone who has experience at the very top and is still only 25 years old.

With Palace saving him from the mess that is the current Chelsea setup, for at least this season anyway, he could return to his best and form quite the partnership with Guehi.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah

Earning plenty of praise before Maresca arrived in London, Chalobah's form was described as "excellent" during Thomas Tuchel's reign. The former Chelsea boss said via Football365: "Fantastic. He gets all the praise and it’s well deserved. Two excellent matches.

"He played against Arsenal and Tottenham in friendlies, then 120 minutes on Wednesday, then 90 today and scores. It’s fantastic these things happen in sports. A perfect day for him."

All of a sudden, from the threat of losing Guehi, Palace are set to have three solid options to turn to in the form of the England international, Chalobah and Lacroix when it comes to Oliver Glasner's defensive duo.
