Arsenal urged to follow PSG example as club legend tells Mikel Arteta to take tips from Luis Enrique

Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to take inspiration from Luis Enrique's attacking approach at Paris Saint-Germain, claiming the Gunners' football has become too cautious. The Arsenal legend believes his former club should adopt a more direct and dynamic style, similar to the one that has transformed Les Parisiens over the last year.

Club legend believes Arsenal don't play exciting football

Petit reckons Arsenal’s current approach under Arteta has become overly reliant on possession and set pieces. He praised PSG's evolution under Enrique, highlighting their switch from sterile control to fast, forward-thinking football. He suggested Arsenal need to embrace a similar attacking intent if they want to take the next step.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportPetit wants Arteta to make Arsenal more like PSG

Speaking to the , Petit said: "Paris Saint-Germain, they look strong. Again, they started against Atalanta, and beat them 4-0 with some players injured. It's like they were following exactly what they've done for the last six months of the last season. They've been brilliant. The way they play, I love it.”

He continued: "They control the ball, they control the position of the ball, but they play straight forward, you know. They play fast football. This is something I want to see with Arsenal. Possession is good, but if you don't play forward football, possession can be boring. Give me the ball, I give you the ball, give me the ball, I give you the ball.”

Petit concluded by pointing to PSG’s turnaround as a lesson for Arteta: "That was the problem with Luis Enrique at Paris Saint-Germain for months. Nobody could understand what he wanted to do. And it changed. He played more direct football and all of a sudden it changed completely."

AFPArsenal have failed in three straight Premier League title races

Arteta has brought stability and consistency to Arsenal, but questions remain over the team’s attacking spark and whether they can win silverware. The Gunners have been criticised for cautious play and dependence on set pieces. Their inability to win a single Premier League despite being in three straight title races has underlined their failure to get over the line.

Brighton eyeing appointment of "outstanding" manager who Guardiola loves

Brighton are believed to be eyeing the appointment of an "outstanding" manager who Pep Guardiola loves, according to an exciting new update.

Brighton losing De Zerbi this summer

The Seagulls had a solid season overall, although the campaign did end in rather flat fashion, with Roberto De Zerbi's side's form petering out, so much so that they ended up finishing behind rivals Crystal Palace in 11th place in the Premier League table.

It has now emerged that De Zerbi will leave Brighton after two impressive years in the Amex Stadium hot seat, with a fresh challenge set to appeal to him. Chairman Tony Bloom has confirmed the news, saying: "We have mutually agreed to end Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future."

It remains to be seen where the Italian is heading, assuming he does find another club straight away, but Chelsea and Manchester United are two of the clubs who have been strongly linked with acquiring his signature.

Kieran McKenna was seen as an option to be De Zerbi's successor at the Amex this summer, but the highly-rated young manager has now decided to remain in charge of Ipswich Town, having inspired them to back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship.

Now, a shock rumour has emerged linking Brighton with an appointment that could be met with plenty of excitement from the fanbase.

Brighton eyeing "outstanding" former boss

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Brighton are set to open talks with former manager Graham Potter over a return to the club. It is described as a potentially "sensational" reunion with the Englishman, who enjoyed such an impressive spell with the Seagulls first time around.

The south coast club have "turned their attention" to him ahead of the exit of De Zerbi, after missing out on top choice McKenna.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

Potter returning to Brighton may not necessarily be completely unviersally popular – some may naturally feel that reunions can be wrong – but plenty of fans will love the idea of him back at the club, given how well he did first time around.

The 49-year-old guided the Seagulls to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League back in 2021/22, playing some eye-catching football along the way, with Guardiola lauding his work at Brighton as "outstanding".

Potter would feel like a safe appointment, in terms of knowing the club inside out and taking out the risk element if bringing in more of an unknown, and he could be desperate to get back into management after seeing his reputation damaged at Chelsea, lasting just 31 matches in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Canada learn from their mistakes

When they were in with a chance of upsetting Pakistan, Canada choked, but against Kenya, they used smart tactics and learned how to build partnerships

Nagraj Gollapudi at the Feroz Shah Kotla 07-Mar-2011The day before their clash in Delhi, both Kenya and Canada’s captains had said their teams would play their own brands of cricket. Jimmy Kamande promised his players would be expressive and bold, while Ashish Bagai said we could expect fluency from his men. At the end of Monday’s game, Kamande could barely speak, hurt and distraught; Bagai was all smiles, and even spoke a few words of Hindi.Canada were the sum of their parts on Monday. Their fast bowlers ensured they kept their foot on Kenya’s throat after making early inroads; their fielders remained electric and attentive to avoid any slip-ups; and in the end, their middle-order batsmen kept their heads light but focussed to snatch a comfortable victory, only their second in all World Cups.Essentially, Canada finished the job they had started against Pakistan last week. Then, chasing a similar target (184), they had stumbled at the halfway stage. Sensing a victory against a bigger opponent, they had shivered in the headlights. No such nerves on Monday. It was evident that Canada had been working on their mistakes.Against Sri Lanka, in their opening match, they realised how big the chasm was between an Associate and a big brother. The realisation that they needed to do more than just turn up to last in a 50-over match hit them flush in the face like a Mike Tyson punch. Then, against Zimbabwe, Bagai talked up their chances and they duly got steamrollered by a 175-run defeat. But it was against Pakistan that they took a big stride toward recovery. On a turning track, against an opponent never far from being fallible, Canada fielded and bowled with fervour to restrict Pakistan to less than 200. But could their batsmen pace the innings without allowing Pakistan to gain control? You don’t walk in with doubts when you are facing Shahid Afridi, and he lauded it over Canada in feudal style, whipping them into submission with his versatility as much as his aura.Ashish Bagai’s partnership with Jimmy Hansra ensured Canada completed the job they had started against Pakistan•Getty ImagesBut, on Monday, it was a battle of equals; and Canada brought their best game to the table. Henry Osinde delivered the kind of spell captains yearn for from their premier bowlers; and with Kenya 57 for 5, Canada knew unless they did something completely stupid the match was theirs.Luckily, they had a Plan B if things did not pan out the way they were expected to. On the eve of the match, Bagai had predicted that spin would be the dominant factor on a pitch that was devoid of any grass, in addition to being slow and low. But that never happened. Even Balaji Rao, their best spinner, who had managed to keep the Pakistan batsmen silent, couldn’t do much. Still, Canada sensed they held the advantage as Kenya did not have many wickets in the bag. It was Kenya then that panicked in the end and lost their way. Then, Canada made a smart move in sending the big-hitting Rizwan Cheema in to open. Though he did not last long, his brief cameo made clear the Canadian intentions: they were here to win.”We had a disappointing batting display against Zimbabwe and Pakistan, and we had a chance of getting a win over Pakistan, but we were looking at the present,” Bagai said after the win. “We are pretty happy with the guys who performed well. Henry bowled fantastic first-up, got us the advantage and then we pulled it back again in the Powerplay. And then two guys batted to get us over the line.”The two guys Bagai was talking about were himself and Jimmy Hansra. The pair added 132 for the fourth wicket, and along the way learned a few valuable lessons about constructing partnerships, which seems to be the Achilles heel of the batting line-ups of the Associate teams. “We were fortunate enough to have no run-rate pressure; four runs an over on that wicket would always be gettable if you spent some time on the wicket,” Bagai said. “It was not an easy wicket to get used to, but once you were in there you could work it around.”Kamande admitted the loss was a bitter pill to swallow against an opponent Kenya fancied beating. “I will not hide it. Today was our most disappointing performance of the tournament,” he said.Bagai, who was born in Delhi, found plenty of home support at the Kotla, with his “grandparents, friends, relatives” accounting for some 50 people of the 5,500-strong crowd. Asked if he was chilled or thrilled with Canada’s victory, Bagai said: “We are chilled with the win. We are looking to use this as a spark for the second half of the first round. My goal now is to get the batsmen who are performing to be consistent and leave the first round on a high.”

Channel Seven pay up in broadcast battle with Cricket Australia

A payment of A$10 million was made on Wednesday as discussions continue at board level

Channel Seven have backed down from an earlier threat to pay only one partial instalment of their broadcast deal with Cricket Australia for the whole summer, as talks between the network and the governing body graduated to board level ahead of a looming deadline.CA’s accounts were topped up by the payment of an additional A$10 million on Wednesday, the remainder of the $25 million instalment that had been due to be handed over by Seven on September 15, despite the company’s insistence that it would not be paying another cent for the season. Both parties have until October 3 to reach a compromise before Seven insist that their complaints about the broadcast deal, signed in conjunction with Foxtel for A$1.18 billion in April 2018, must be independently assessed and the contract revised accordingly.Seven’s voice in the dispute, which over the past two weeks have seen it clearly in breach of payment requirements to CA, has largely been taken by its chief executive James Warburton, who replaced Tim Worner in late 2019 and recently announced the network had signed a multi-year deal to air the Supercars motor racing format of which he was previously chief executive. However, it is believed that recent discussions graduated to be between the respective boards of Seven West Media and CA. Seven’s directors include its multibillionaire chairman Kerry Stokes and his son Ryan, and also the former Essendon chairman and financial advisor David Evans, who has also served as the head of CA’s own investment committee.Seven’s directors’ report, part of its extensive financial reporting for the 2019-20 financial year, indicated that the organisation expected live sporting coverage to be a key part of its recovery from both the struggles of the Covid-19 pandemic and also the wider issue of significant debts and a long-running drop in its share price. This contrasted with some of Warburton’s more outlandish statements, attacking CA while also indicating that Seven wished to get out of its cricket deal entirely. These inflammatory words have run in the face of an improving advertising market in the second half of 2020, and another set of promising broadcast audiences, albeit in lower rating afternoon slots, for Seven’s coverage of the women’s T20I series between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane over the past five days.CA’s interim chief executive, Nick Hockley, has been accompanied by the Sydney-based CA director and former Foxtel chief executive Richard Freudenstein in meetings with Warburton, though Freudenstein has recused himself from meetings with Foxtel’s current chief Patrick Delany. Most of the umbrage between Seven, Foxtel and CA has revolved around the bloated size and shape of the Big Bash, which expanded to a 14-game home and away season under the terms of the 2018 deal, having seen teams play just eight games a tournament as recently as 2016. Seven’s part in the overall deal is weighted towards paying more for the BBL than for international cricket, a ratio that runs contrary to CA’s own strategic imperatives about maintaining the primacy of the international game. Some of Seven and Foxtel’s concerns about the BBL and player availability were recently assuaged when a scheduled ODI series between Australia and New Zealand in late January was postponed so it would no longer clash with the domestic T20 tournament. Australia’s T20 side will instead travel to New Zealand in late February and early March.

Jamie Overton to join Surrey on loan from Somerset immediately

Having signed a three-year deal from next season, Overton can now play Surrey’s remaining BWT and Blast matches

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Sep-2020Jamie Overton will join Surrey on loan for the rest of the 2020 domestic season.Overton, who has already agreed a three-year deal to join Surrey from Somerset at the end of the current season, will now play for Surrey throughout September. He will be available for all South Group matches in the Vitality Blast and Surrey’s one remaining Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Sussex, starting on Sunday.Surrey Director of Cricket Alec Stewart thanked his Somerset counterpart, Andy Hurry, and the club for releasing Overton. “I’m looking forward to seeing Jamie play and perform in a Surrey shirt,” Stewart said.Overton, who went on loan to Northamptonshire last season, has struggled to gain opportunities in Somerset’s first-choice attack, with twin brother Craig, Lewis Gregory and Josh Davey all ahead of him in the County Championship pecking order in recent times. Somerset have also boosted their seam-bowling stocks by adding Jack Brooks and Vernon Philander, although the latter’s deal was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While Surrey have several seamers on their books, they are regularly without the Curran brothers due to international duties.Part of England’s 30-man training group ahead of the West Indies Test series, Overton has been in impressive form with bat and ball for Somerset in the Bob Willis Trophy. He claimed a five-wicket haul – and seven wickets for the match – against Glamorgan before scoring 68 and taking 4 for 26 among five wickets for the match against Northamptonshire. He then scored a maiden first class century with his 120 in Somerset’s draw with Warwickshire.Hurry said: “Jamie has requested an immediate loan move after recently agreeing a contract with Surrey CCC for next season and beyond and we have agreed to this request. I want to take this opportunity to thank Jamie for all his contributions and commitment to the club over the last 10 years and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Rajinder Goel, the highest wicket-taker in Ranji Trophy history, dies aged 77

Rajinder Goel, the highest wicket-taker in the history of the Ranji Trophy with 637 strikes, has passed away at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness. In all, the left-arm spinner took 750 wickets – most of them for Haryana – in 157 first-class matches from 1958-59 to 1984-85. He bagged an incredible 53 five-fors and 17 ten-wicket match hauls.ALSO READ – I was born at the wrong time, says GoelFormer India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly paid tribute to Goel. “The Indian cricketing community has lost a giant of domestic cricket today,” he said in a statement. “His staggering record tells you about his craft and the control he had over it. To have a career that lasts more than 25 years and still be able to perform consistently speaks about his dedication and commitment towards the game. To be able to pick 750 wickets needs years and years of hard work and I salute his efforts. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.”In the mid-1960s, when Bishan Singh Bedi was making his mark, the question that was asked was, “is he as good as Goel?” Ironically, one reason Goel never played for India was because Bedi had cemented his spot in the India team. The closest Goel came to play for India was in the unofficial Test against Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1964-65. In September 1979, Goel picked up 6 for 102 for North Zone against a visiting Australian side led by Kim Hughes. He continued playing first-class cricket until he was 43, with fitness proving a crucial aspect of his long and storied domestic career. Even when he was in his last season in 1984-85, Goel trained hard; his practice sessions would involve 3500 skips of a rope and a long run, followed by bowling to at least 10 batsmen in the nets.Goel couldn’t win the Ranji Trophy as a player, but he was the chairman of the Haryana selection committee in 1991 when a Kapil Dev-led side shocked Bombay (now Mumbai) at the Wankhede Stadium. After his playing career, Goel also served as a match referee in both men’s and women’s cricket. In 2017, Goel received the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. He is one of the four non-Test players to have got the BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award; the others being Padmakar Shivalkar, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar and journalist KN Prabhu.

Arsenal eye teen Toney alternative, Edu’s scouts say he’s a "huge talent"

With Arsenal's need for a centre forward well documented, it appears that Edu Gaspar has now turned away from previous targets and is interested in one of Europe's most promising strikers.

Arsenal's search for a striker

Don't let the eighteen goals in their last four Premier League games fool you, Arsenal are still in dire need of a number nine. This season has seen Mikel Arteta opt to play without a traditional centre forward for much of the campaign, relying on goals to come from his wingers.

Whilst Bukayo Saka's thirteen league goals are impressive and Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard have all chipped in, it still feels that the Gunners are missing the leading man to take them to the next level. Players initially signed to fulfill these duties have not gone to plan with Gabriel Jesus struggling with injury and the aforementioned Havertz adopting a deeper role.

Despite the clear need for a striker, Arteta made it clear such a move was not possible this January, telling beIN Sports that: "At the moment it doesn't look realistic. My job is to improve the players we have."

Whilst the Gunners' boss declines any interest in a new number nine, it hasn't stopped the rumour mill from turning. A strong return following his ban has seen Ivan Toney's name back in contention for the vacancy however, reports now suggest that Arsenal have an interest in a teenage talent who could be a better alternative to the Brentford man.

Edu eyes exciting Toney alternative

According to Football Insider, sources within the club have said that Brighton forward Evan Ferguson is on Arsenal's radar with Edu's talent spotters at the Emirates regarding him as a "huge talent" who will go on to become a world beater.

Making his debut for Brighton in early 2022, the 19-year-old has had a rapid rise on the South coast, scoring 12 Premier League goals in just 44 appearances. The most impressive of this catalogue was the Irishman's hat-trick against Newcastle that saw Ferguson tipped to go all the way by his current boss Roberto De Zerbi:

"He can become big, big, big. His qualities are enough to become a great player. He can become one of the best, the top scorer in Europe. He was born in 2004, he's 18. I don't know how many players are young, that score like him."

Eight years the junior of Toney, Ferguson would offer the kind of player better suited to the project Edu and Arteta are building in North London. Boasting the third-youngest squad in the league, it would be within their interests to go for the younger option.

Whilst Toney would deliver the short-term impact needed to deliver immediate success, a club as process driven as Arsenal would see the benefits that Ferguson would bring in the long run. Giving one of Europe's most promising talents the chance to develop would prove far more beneficial overall than signing a proven goalscorer who may have only a few seasons left in the tank.

Klopp must bench £85k-p/w Liverpool star for Carabao Cup final

Today is arguably the biggest game of Liverpool's season so far. The Reds are set to take on Chelsea in the first domestic cup final of the campaign.

The Carabao Cup final is the first chance for any English team to get their hands on some silverware and Liverpool are strong favourites.

This is likely because the Reds find themselves at the top of the Premier League whilst the Blues currently reside in mid-table.

Additionally, Jurgen Klopp's men have won eight out of their last nine games against the west London club, with their last loss coming all the way back in 2021.

However, as Liverpool have suffered a plethora of injuries this season, the playing field has been levelled somewhat and Chelsea could capitalise on the fact that the Merseysiders are missing some of their key players.

So, in order to try and win the final, Klopp will have to try and line up with his strongest team.

Hence, why Joe Gomez may have to be dropped and replaced by one of his teammates.

Joe Gomez's season in numbers so far

Klopp's men have been through something of an injury crisis this season and have had many starters absent from the vast majority of their games.

There has even been a point where both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas were both unavailable, which left Liverpool without a natural senior left-back in their ranks.

So, this was where Gomez came into the picture. The defender has been Mr. Versatile for the Anfield club this season and has played across the entirety of the back four.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

It feels as if the £85k-per-week defender has really managed to step up his game this season and become one of Klopp's most reliable players.

Although he is yet to score a goal in his senior career, across the season so far the former Charlton man has amassed a total of 34 games played and has even managed to assist his teammates twice.

However, in his most recent Premier League game against Luton, it feels as if he didn't play up to the standards that he has shown throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

As per Sofascore, the defender lost 8/11 duels which he attempted and even managed to be dribbled past a total of four times. When compared to the likes of youngster, Conor Bradley, who himself is having a breakout season, it puts into perspective how off the pace the full-back was.

The 20-year-old won 7/10 of the duels he attempted and was only dribbled past on one occasion. So, in order for Liverpool to have the best chance of coming away with the Carabao Cup, they may have to sit Gomez out.

Who Klopp should start ahead of Gomez

Although he has been sidelined for a large portion of the season, Robertson could be the ideal replacement for the defender.

Andrew Robertson celebrates for Liverpool.

Gomez has been fairly consistent across the season, but if his form is starting on a downward spiral, it could be for the greater good that he is benched for the final.

Aside from this season, the Scotland international has been a peripheral figure within Klopp's system.

So much so that both he and Trent Alexander-Arnold are, at present, joint-top in the total number of assists by defenders in England's top flight.

After Robertson scored his first Premier League goal of the season against Wolves on the 16th September, Klopp said the following:

"Andy hasn't scored that many goals, so it was nice for him. He's been super consistent over the years. A top bloke, a good guy. And a world-class left-back – not every day, but often.

"The goal was exceptional. In the first half, that would never have happened, Robbo appearing with a goal like that. It was still a surprise for everyone."

This not only shows how highly the German rates Robertson, but it also shows how consistent he has been for the Reds since joining.

So, if Liverpool wish to have the best chance of coming away with the trophy, including the 29-year-old in their starting XI, it may be for the better.

NSWE ready to make Aston Villa bid for "warrior" Emery has signed before

da dobrowin: Aston Villa have been named as one of several sides ready to make a bid for a Premier League outcast this summer, but will face Serie A competition for his signature.

Villa eyeing Champions League football

da aposte e ganhe: Aston Villa are on course for Champions League football for the first time since 1982/83 thanks to an excellent season under Unai Emery. With 11 games left of the season, they sit firmly in fourth place in the Premier League, five points ahead of Tottenham (though they have a game in hand) and a massive 11 points clear of Manchester United in sixth place.

They also remain in the Europa Conference League and begin their road to the final with a two-legged affair against Ajax, where they will be hoping that Emery's uncanny ability to win games of knockout football will come to the fore.

Despite having plenty left to play for this season, attention has already turned to the summer transfer window and there is plenty of speculation surrounding several Villa Park stars amid financial fair play concerns.

However, there are also suggestions that incomings are also under consideration.

Sky Sports man speaks out on Douglas Luiz's future at Aston Villa

Villa could be forced to sell this summer, and one man is hot on everyone’s lips.

ByBen Browning Mar 6, 2024 Ex-Emery signing back on the radar

As per a report from TeamTalk, Villa are one of the clubs keen on a move for Arsenal outcast Kieran Tierney this summer, with Celtic and a host of Italian clubs also reportedly ready to bid for the 26-year-old.

They claim that Tierney will be allowed to leave north London permanently this summer and that Arsenal will be holding out for a fee of around £26m to let him depart. This would allow them to make a profit on the £25m they paid Celtic for his services in 2019, and also fund the reportedly hefty summer transfer business of their own, which is thought to involve additions at striker and in central midfield.

kieran-tierney-unai-emery

Given his situation in the north London pecking order, however it seems unlikely that the Gunners will be receiving any offers in that region.

Tierney has two years left to run on his £110,000 per week contract in north London, but does not appear to have a future at the Emirates Stadium. He has spent this season on loan with Spanish outfit Real Sociedad and has done little to suggest that he will be able to add anything to Mikel Arteta's title-challenging squad, with Jakub Kiwior having looked more at-ease with the left-back role in recent weeks and Oleksandr Zinchenko still expected to be an important figure from that position.

That does not make Tierney a bad left back though. Former Chelsea star Ashley Cole showered him with praise during his first season at the Emirates, explaining: "When he’s in the team, they are a different team, he’s willing to defend, he’s that kind of leader and warrior they need in this team."

His defensive numbers speak for themselves, with the Scot among the finest in Europe when it comes to 1vs1 defending.
