Harmanpreet aces the chase after bowlers stifle Bangladesh

Miserly bowling spells from Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma, followed by a quick fifty from Harmanpreet Kaur, set up a straightforward seven-wicket win for India over Bangladesh in their first international outing in over four months.Bowling first, India restricted Bangladesh to 114 for 5, with Vastrakar and Deepti drying the runs before Harmanpreet’s unbeaten 35-ball 54 and Smriti Mandhana’s 34-ball 38 sealed victory for the visitors with 22 balls left.

Bangladesh start strong in helpful bowling conditions

With conditions overcast and the surface having a tinge of green, Harmanpreet had no hesitation fielding first. Her decision was vindicated with Vastrakar starting with a maiden, finding generous movement in the air. It was Minnu Mani, one of the two India debutants, who struck the first blow, getting rid of Shamima Sultana. Despite being struck for a four and six off the previous two balls, Mani stuck to her plan of keeping it slow outside off. Sultana went for one shot too many and holed out at deep square leg.Shathi Rani, also on debut for Bangladesh, took down Amanjot Kaur for three successive fours as the hosts reached 46 for 1 after seven overs, starting to look comfortable.

Bowlers squeeze, Shorna shores Bangladesh up

While the quicks got movement, the spinners also found sharp turn and bounce, and Hamanpreet was quick to ring in the changes. Vastrakar roughed Rani up with a few bumpers before sending down a quick one to rattle her stumps. And once Rani fell, the runs slowed down to a trickle. Bangladesh managed the solitary boundary between overs eight to 16, also lost three wickets in the period.Their run-rate came down to five an over, and the captain Nigar Sultana’s needless run-out hurt them further. Deepti was at her miserly best, mixing her lengths and varying her speeds, and got good support from Vastrakar and the two debutants – Mani and B Anusha.Only Shorna Akter’s late blows helped Bangladesh go past the 100-mark. On 6 off 16 at one stage, she struck two sixes to finish unbeaten on a run-a-ball 28, helping Bangladesh creep up to 114 for 5.

Harmanpreet, Mandhana set up India’s easy chase

Defending a small score, Bangladesh couldn’t have asked for a better start with Marufa Akter trapping Shafali Varma, who played all around an in-dipper, in her first over. Jemimah Rodrigues struck a couple of crisp fours but was soon cleaned up by Sultana Khatun for 11.Mandhana and Harmanpreet, however, made sure the Bangladesh celebrations were short-lived. Mandhana got going with a four past point in the second over before slamming Marufa for back-to-back fours either side of the wicket right after Rodrigues’ dismissal. Harmanpreet also cashed in early as India reached 41 for 2 at the end of six overs. The duo made sure to capitalise on every loose ball, of which there were plenty, adding 70 off 55 balls for the third wicket. By the time Mandhana danced down the track only to be stumped for 38, the game was in India’s grasp.Harmanpreet, who was dropped on 24, did the final honours. She opened up her shoulders, smashing Rabeya Khan for a six and four, before bringing up her 11th T20I fifty off just 34 balls in the 17th over with a six over deep midwicket. The very next ball brought about the end of the game with Harmanpreet fittingly finishing things off with a four through midwicket again.

Liam Dawson century topples Essex title push on day of undulating drama

Brilliant century in partnership with Vince all but seals title for Surrey, as fielding lapses cost hosts

Andrew Miller22-Sep-2023Less than a week has elapsed since Hampshire were hunting down a teasing target of 267 against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge in the Metro Bank Cup final, and somehow contrived to trip up with victory at their mercy. At Chelmsford, they made amends in thrilling final-over fashion – and in the process all but settled another tussle for silverware, albeit not their own – as Essex’s valiant bid for the County Championship title crumbled in the face of a brilliant Liam Dawson century.Dawson, whose dismissal for 57 at Trent Bridge on Saturday had been the turning point of that tense contest, once again fell short of sealing the deal when, with 20 runs still needed from 23 balls, he crashed Matt Critchley into Nick Browne’s midriff at short cover, to offer Essex the most slender of late lifelines.Hampshire’s tail, however, wasn’t about to let two chases slip in a week – not even when Keith Barker, the man who couldn’t connect for Saturday’s winning hit, ran past a slog for glory with two runs needed. Instead, Ben Brown did the needful with a thump to deep midwicket off Simon Harmer, to seal the contest with five balls remaining, and trigger a wave of euphoria in Surrey’s dressing-room down at The Oval, where they had spent much of the day watching their season’s work flash before their eyes. With no dog in that particular fight, however, Dawson’s own mission for the day had long since been completed: in racking up 119 from 150 balls, his third century of a stellar Championship season, he not only rescued Hampshire from a sickly 32 for 4 with a pivotal fifth-wicket stand of 184 with James Vince, but oversaw a momentum swing at the top of the Championship standings that would have given less resolute characters motion sickness. The tale of the tape was thus: Essex had begun the penultimate round with a deficit of 18 points, and with scant hope of closing the gap given that Surrey were at home to the relegation-bound Northants. And yet, after a clatter of morning wickets at the Kia Oval had condemned Surrey to the follow-on, Essex seemed dead-certs to capitalise on the champions’ missed moment with their seventh win on the bounce, and slash that deficit to a meagre four points.Instead, they were left to rue a fielding display studded with errors, including a huge let-off apiece for each of Hampshire’s main men: Vince on 16, dropped in the deep by Critchley off Harmer, whose three habitually early wickets had left his opponents punch-drunk, and then critically, Dawson on 50, a leaping edge to slip off Critchley himself, where Alastair Cook – a key focus of attention amid reports of his impending retirement – couldn’t recover as the chance clanged off his chest. If the Vince reprieve, at 52 for 4, helped to snap Hampshire’s game-brains back into place, then Dawson’s let-off, 97 runs later, was the moment that Essex’s belief visibly ebbed from their performance. Blow by blow, they were beaten back by two World Cup winners – men who were present in the dressing-room through England’s 2019 triumph, and who know full well, by osmosis as much as through their own clear abilities, how to pace a chase that never threatened to tick over a run a ball. “It’s just a different colour ball,” as Paul Collingwood, England’s assistant Test coach, put it recently when describing the ever-converging methods of the red- and white-ball games.Dan Lawrence made a swashbuckling half-century•Getty Images

Vince’s first shot in anger had been a dismissive drive back over Harmer’s head for six, but after his let-off, he shelved the aerial strokeplay and set about taking lumps out of his team’s target with a volley of five stroked fours before tea that took him to an ominous 43 from 30, with 179 still needed in 39. In theory, it was in Essex’s interest for Hampshire to have an incentive, but such was the pair’s poise on the resumption that the requirement seemed to drain away by stealth. The mood around Chelmsford was hardly aided by news of Surrey’s dour dead-batting down at The Oval, and Dawson duly slapped Sam Cook through point to bring up the century stand at almost the precise moment that Northants shook hands on their relegation-inducing draw. With his century in sight, Vince hoisted Cook handsomely over long-on for his second six, only to come unstuck in Critchley’s subsequent over, hacking a skewed drive to Dan Lawrence in the covers. But even that seemed too little too late for Essex, especially when Umesh Yadav’s brilliant sprawling effort at backward square off Dawson, on 97 at the time, was deemed to have been a bump-ball. Two balls later, Dawson crunched Critchley down the ground for his 14th four, and celebrated with a raise of the arms to put the seal on a truly mighty all-round season. In the final analysis, Essex will know, however, that they blew a golden opportunity to take the title to a straight shoot-out. They claimed nine Hampshire wickets in the course of the day’s play, after all, two of which had come in a perfunctory round-up of their first innings, seven hours and several lifetimes earlier in the day.At that early stage of proceedings, with Chelmsford’s replay screen gleefully showing footage of Surrey’s slide towards their follow-on, Essex could smell the unease emanating from south London. Even as he was flicking off Tom Prest’s bails to end an excellent knock on 108 and give Harmer his sixth wicket of the innings, Adam Rossington began sprinting for the pavilion to pad up, in a clear sign of how Essex intended their second innings to pan out.Sure enough, Rossington re-emerged ten minutes later in a gambit for quick runs, but instead served up a tame three-ball duck that rather set the tone for a nondescript first ten overs of the declaration push, a passage that was coloured – perhaps inevitably – by the play within a play. The notion of Cook’s impending retirement had been shot down by Essex in a snotty statement on Thursday afternoon (the tone of which had perhaps been informed by their sudden realisation that the title was back up for grabs). However, that hardly discouraged a knot of photographers from congregating at the foot of the stairs to greet his (final?) emergence from the Chelmsford pavilion. And for 38 deliveries spanning 45 minutes, Cook captured the attention – if not the zeitgeist – in a poignantly out-of-kilter display. Were this officially a valedictory innings, one might suggest it was an apt metaphor for Cook’s raging-against-the-light career, as he fought valiantly against his natural inclinations, seeking to raise the tempo in the T20-prescribed fashion, only to lose his shape, and ultimately his wicket, in the process.Cook thrashed and he yanked and, just once, he connected with a meaty lump through the line off Kyle Abbott as Essex finally reached the boundary from the first ball of the seventh over – a powerplay it had not been. But then, two balls after connecting on a cut that burst through Prest’s hands at point, Cook wound into a cramped pull off Abbas, and under-edged through to the keeper. His departure was another dead-pan vignette: an old cricketer leaving the crease, almost visibly resisting the urge to raise his bat as an uncertain tribute gathered momentum around the ground, before allowing himself just the hint of a grimace as he disappeared into the dressing-room. Whatever it is that remains of his storied career, he’d be giving nothing away just yet. With the prologue done, then, the declaration push could begin in earnest, as a man rather better equipped for such a situation strode out for a Chelmsford farewell that had fewer caveats. Lawrence duly inside-edged his second ball through fine leg for four (it’s how many, not how, as Cook would doubtless agree), but thereafter he batted like a man with a very personal reason to swipe some silverware from under the noses of his future employers. Were it not for Essex’s Championship ambitions, Lawrence might well be up at Trent Bridge right now, preparing for England’s ODI against Ireland on Saturday. Instead he did his international prospects no harm at all in absentia, unfurling a range of preposterous cross-court forehands, including a full-blown helicopter whip for six off Abbott, to inject the impetus that Essex urgently needed. His 45-ball half-century drove the agenda in an 83-run stand in exactly 12 overs with Tom Westley, whose 45 from 49 ended when he launched Abbott to deep cover on the stroke of lunch.Alastair Cook walks up the steps to the dressing room after being dismissed•Getty Images

The lead at that stage was a handy but still skinny 225, so more leverage was required. Enter Paul Walter at No. 4, who clouted Dawson over midwicket for six before being bowled next ball for 13, and Umesh Yadav, who bashed his first two balls over the Tom Pearce Stand for his fifth and sixth sixes of the match, then immediately holed out to long-on in search of a seventh. In between whiles, Critchley and Harmer misfired to deep cover to give Abbott a four-wicket haul, as the contest reset for round four.Meanwhile, down at The Oval, Surrey by now were deep into their go-slow, with Rory Burns and Dom Sibley setting themselves to defend their title advantage at any cost, so Essex seized their chance to hurtle back into contention. Rossington set the standard with a wonderful grab down the leg-side, stretching with his left glove to prise out Tony Albert from Sam Cook’s fourth ball, and then it was over to the inevitable Harmer. The mere act of Harmer stepping up at the River End seemed to spook Fletcha Middleton, whose third-ball sweep was a harbinger of his imminent demise as it ballooned off a top-edge into space at square leg. Three overs later, he connected better – and worse – as Jamie Porter stooped at square leg to cling on, and Harmer made it two in the over when Nick Gubbins closed his face too early and chipped a leading edge to cover for 9.Another harbinger followed, however, in Harmer’s next over. Prest, yet to settle after his first-innings efforts, hacked impetuously down the ground but Walter at long-on couldn’t cling on. This time, however, it didn’t seem to matter; Harmer merely turned at the top of his mark and induced Prest into a flinch off the pads to short leg to leave Hampshire 32 for 4 and floundering. And yet, Dawson’s arrival to join Vince, allied to Essex’s crucial lapses, would turn the afternoon’s expectations upside-down.

Georgia Adams' all-round show helps Vipers to big win over Thunder

Emily Windsor fifty, Lindsey Smith three-for help strengthen bid for knockout spot

ECB Reporters Network09-Sep-2023Georgia Adams went past 400 runs and 15 wickets in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as Southern Vipers continued their march for a knockout spot with victory over Thunder.Adams scored a classy 71, during a pivotal 114-run stand with Emily Windsor – who scored a boisterous 59 to help shore up Vipers before another collapse saw them post 237. Linsey Smith ripped out the Thunder top order as they slipped to 33 for 5, with Adams getting two wickets, before eventually losing by 64 runs – despite Fi Morris’ 52.Vipers moved up to second in the table, having played a game more than those around them, while Thunder’s hopes of progression took a massive hit with two games to go.Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove set a platform after Vipers had won the toss and chosen to bat first. But after reaching 45, Vipers lost three wickets in eight overs as Hannah Jones’ introduction swung the momentum towards the visitors. The left-arm spinner struck with her first delivery to bowl McCaughan for a spritely 29 off 33 balls before the more sluggish Norgrove was lbw for 16 off 44. Jones also got her fingertips to an Adams straight drive to run out Georgia Elwiss while backing up.But Adams and Windsor righted the ship with a counter attack to lay the foundations for a score which had the potential to get close to 300, especially after Jones quickly completed her 10 overs.Adams was particularly strong running between the wickets in the Arundel heat, while Windsor showed uncharacteristic power – having worked on her hitting at Welsh Fire during the Hundred.Adams brought up her fifth half-century of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 53 balls, while Windsor followed with her second of the competition in 63 deliveries. The duo put on 114 to boost Vipers to 193 for 4 with 14 overs to go, but after Adams clipped Ireland international Laura Delany to midwicket they collapsed.Windsor skipped past Morris in the following over before Smith, Alice Monaghan, Rhianna Southby and Ava Lee all fell as the hosts lost seven wickets for 44 runs in 60 balls – Morris and Olivia Bell both taking three wickets. Vipers ending up on 237 in 47.5 overs.Thunder’s slump was even more severe as their top order disintegrated. Smith was the main instigator as she had Liberty Heap lbw in the second over, Naomi Dattani caught at backward point and Ellie Threlkeld sweeping to backward point. The spinner’s first six-over spell result in in 3 for 17.Mary Taylor picked up Southern Brave team-mate Seren Smale with an in-ducker while Delany was bowled by Adams.Morris and Daisy Mullan dug their side out of the hole, while still staying in touch with the required run rate in a 57-run stand. Morris struck a run-a-ball 50 but both fell in quick succession as Morris was bowled by talented young offspinner Lee and Mullan was caught and bowled by Adams.Phoebe Graham and Tara Norris slowed up Vipers’ hunt for victory, they saw off Smith – who ended with 3 for 29 – but Graham was cleaned up by Taylor.Taylor’s slower ball accounted for Norris, who picked out long-on, and Bell lobbed to midwicket to give Taylor best figures of 4 for 39.

The next Cole Palmer: Chelsea must rue parting ways with "outrageous" star

da stake casino: Chelsea have endured somewhat of a drop-off in recent weeks under Enzo Maresca, failing to live up to the early standards he set for himself in the early stages of his time at Stamford Bridge.

da spicy bet: The Italian only lost two of his first 10 Premier League matches at the helm, looking as though they could be in an unexpected title battle at one stage.

However, their form has taken a turn for the worse over the last few weeks, losing four of the last eight matches, seeing them slip to sixth place and sitting behind Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.

Injuries have undoubtedly contributed to the recent decline, with seven first-team members currently sitting on the sidelines and unable to aid the manager in his attempts to secure Champions League football.

Maresca has still been able to rely on one player who’s been the shining light in West London since his big money to the club a couple of years ago.

Cole Palmer’s stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

After his £40m move from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, Cole Palmer had an immediate impact for the Blues, registering 25 goals and 15 assists in his debut year in West London.

Such a record has made the Englishman’s task of matching such a tally this time around that little bit harder, but he’s already produced numerous moments of magic that have taken the division by storm once again.

The 22-year-old has already scored 14 times during the ongoing campaign, whilst also registering six assists for his teammates – with his combined tally the highest in the first-team squad.

His best performance undoubtedly came in the 4-2 thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion, with Palmer scoring all four in the first half, becoming the first player in the division’s history to achieve such a feat.

Despite his excellent form under Maresca, the club may have allowed the next version of the superstar to slip through their net – making a mistake in allowing him to depart the club.

The player who could’ve been Chelsea’s next Palmer

Living up to the high standards set by Palmer is no easy feat, something which no player currently at the Bridge has managed this season given his tally of contributions.

However, the thought of having another version of the England international is a scary prospect, but one that unfortunately won’t come to reality after letting Tyler Dibling slip through their net.

The 18-year-old, who is currently starring for Southampton in the Premier League, was brought for £1.5m by the Blues back in the summer of 2022 – but it would be a move that was short-lived.

After making just two appearances for the academy, he would return to the Saints after failing to settle, with the Blues potentially living to regret their decision not to make the teenager more at home when they had the opportunity.

He’s since developed into a key member of their first team in 2024/25, making 21 appearances in the league and scoring twice – leading to journalist Eduardo Hagn labelling the talent as “outrageous”.

Dibling possesses very similar traits to Palmer, with the pair both left-footed and operating off the right-hand side and cutting onto their stronger foot after gliding past the opposition.

As seen by their figures from 2024/25, the Saints star has matched or bettered Palmer in numerous key areas, highlighting the quality he brings, possessing the ability to become even better given his tender age.

Whilst there was not much the club could’ve done to stand in his way at such a young age, his development away from the Bridge appears to have rubbed salt into the wounds – demonstrating what they could’ve had.

Unfortunately for the fans and Maresca, Dibling will always remain a case of what could’ve been, with the hierarchy now having to pay a fee in the region of £55m if they were to bring him back to West London in the coming months.

Spinners, Jennings carve out strong Lancashire position but rain looms

Lancashire 327 and 182 for 6 (Jennings 64*) lead Warwickshire 212 (Rhodes 82) by 297 runsLancashire were hoping for kind weather on the last day of their LV=Insurance County Championship match with Warwickshire after they took charge on the third day at Edgbaston. An incisive burst of spin-bowling followed by patient batting has engineered a strong position for the Red Rose. After bowling the home side out for 212, for a first-innings lead of 115, Lancashire closed a rain-shortened third day on 182 for 6 – 297 ahead as Keaton Jennings constructed an unbeaten 64 from 174 balls. On a slow pitch which has never been easy for batting, the visitors were poised to put Warwickshire under pressure on the final day but need the grim weather forecast to be wrong. The dark clouds ever present at Edgbaston this week remain likely to have the final say. That would be frustrating for Jennings’ side who finally forced the match forward in its seventh session after the preceding six had advanced at various degrees of slow. After Warwickshire resumed on the third day on 179 for 5, the Red Rose deployed their spinners, partly because the light was so poor, and it proved a highly productive move as the last five wickets fell for 29 runs in 88 balls. The catalyst for the collapse was an indiscrete reverse-sweep by Dan Mousley (47 off 97 balls) straight to slip off Jack Morley. The left-arm spinner followed that by having Michael Burgess adjudged caught at leg slip before Luke Wells removed Danny Briggs, caught off the face of the bat at short leg.Warwickshire squandered their last two wickets as Olly Hannon-Dalby was run out pursuing a single that didn’t exist and Chris Rushworth, batting with a runner due to a hamstring injury, charged at Wells and was stumped by yards. Suddenly, after two finely balanced days, Lancashire had seized a meaty lead 115.Batting remained tricky when they went in again and Wells’ hitherto happy morning took a dive when he fell lbw to Hannon-Dalby’s third ball. Josh Bohannon came closest to fluency in a 40-ball 25 which ended when he chipped Hannon-Dalby to substitute fielder Marques Ackerman at midwicket but Jennings dropped anchor deep, going into lunch with just a single from 42 balls. The skipper remained entrenched throughout the afternoon while partners came and went. Phil Salt nicked a pull at Ed Barnard. Daryl Mitchell skied Mir Hamza to give Ackerman his second catch. When George Bell nicked Briggs behind it was 83 for 5 and Warwickshire, despite the absence of Rushworth, were fighting back hard.Still the Jennings anchor remained and first-innings century-maker George Balderson settled alongside him to reassert the Red Rose. Jennings posted a 163-ball half-century in a partnership of 92 in 26 overs which looked ready to grow much further until Balderson self-destructed. He set off for a single when his drive was parried by bowler Briggs and, rightly sent back by Jennings, was beaten by Sam Hain’s throw from extra cover. With the lead approaching 300, Lancashire had just started to seek acceleration when rain arrived to lop off the last 20 overs. That lost time, with probably more to follow, is likely to thwart the Red Rose victory bid.

From uncertain starter to leading the side, how Shanto's career turned around

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s life has become a “then and now” meme. Every time he does something meaningful in 2023, it gets compared to last year when he was really struggling. His career has seen a complete reversal in fortunes this year, with the BCB now naming him the captain for the third ODI against New Zealand. On September 25 last year, Shanto wasn’t picked for the first T20I against UAE. Bangladesh were in Dubai for a two-match series for their build-up to the T20 World Cup. Shanto missed both matches, and was an uncertain starter for the World Cup. His struggles at various times last year were fodder for social-media mocking. In the space of exactly 12 months, Shanto has completely turned around his international career. He established himself in the T20I side with a decent World Cup in Australia and followed it with a strong performance in BPL 2023. This year he finally seems to have cracked the ODIs while cementing his Test place too. Now, with both Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das rested ahead of the grind of travelling in India for the ODI World Cup, Shanto’s rise in form and involvement in the field has meant he has been asked to lead the side.Related

Shanto to captain Bangladesh in third ODI against New Zealand

“It is a matter of huge pride for me as a cricketer,” Shanto said. “My family is proud too. I am enjoying this opportunity provided to me by the cricket board. I have had a good journey so far. I have a long way to go yet. I am enjoying every moment regardless of whether it is good or bad. I will try to give my best if there’s more opportunity in the future to lead the side. It is every cricketer’s dream to lead their country.”Bangladesh’s winning streak against New Zealand at home since 2010 has been halted – they can still level the series – but Shanto says there are no nerves in the dressing room.”I think it is a happy occasion,” he said. “I want to ensure that the team finishes well in this series looking ahead to the World Cup. I believe the team is in a good position. I don’t know what happened in 2008 [the last time New Zealand won an ODI series in Bangladesh] but I also think we don’t need to think about it. The main thing is to do well tomorrow.”Bangladesh’s inconsistency with the bat in their last ten completed ODI innings has been a headache. Shanto has bailed them out at times, but he believed that forging partnerships would help the team overcome this problem.”It is challenging for the top order to bat in these [hot] weather conditions,” he said. “We started well in the second ODI. We were 54 for 1 [after ten overs]. So we have to focus on building bigger partnerships once we get a good start. We are working on set batters ensuring they make it big.”[Back-to-back wickets] can happen for any number of reasons. It is always difficult for new batters. The important thing is that the set batter continues for long. They must stay at the wicket. They must play a big innings.”Bangladesh will leave for India on September 27, the day after the third ODI against New Zealand. Their practice matches are on September 29 and October 2, so the tight schedule means they have to take as much confidence as they can into the World Cup. Shanto said that it is not only about playing in similar conditions in Dhaka so that they don’t find a lot of surprises in India, it is also about beating New Zealand so that they round off their preparatory part well.”We want to finish this series well. We don’t know what type of wickets we get in India. I am guessing the wickets will be pretty good. We need to remember that there are some wickets in India where big scores aren’t always possible. We will play tomorrow’s match according to the conditions, and if we finish well, we will have a good preparation.”
