Cantwell and 8/10 Rangers star have just made themselves undroppable

da bet nacional: Glasgow Rangers ran out 5-2 winners over Dundee in an exciting match at Ibrox in their penultimate Scottish Premiership clash of the season on Thursday night.

da betano casino: The Light Blues went into the game knowing that anything other than a win would see their fierce rivals confirmed as league winners.

They, unfortunately, found themselves 2-0 down by the 40th minute of the outing as Dundee struck twice within two minutes.

Philippe Clement's side, however, fought back thanks to goals from Ross McCausland, Cyriel Dessers, Todd Cantwell, and two from Scott Wright.

Whilst Cantwell was the star of the second half comeback but Ross McCausland also caught the eye and both players should now be considered undroppable ahead of the final day and the SFA Cup final later this month.

Todd Cantwell's 9.6/10 Dundee masterclass

The former Norwich City attacking midfielder put on a masterclass in the attacking midfield position on Tuesday night with his sublime attacking play.

He produced a fantastic cross from the left flank to set up Dessers for the equaliser to make it 2-2, with the Nigerian striker able to guide his header into the far bottom corner.

The 26-year-old star then stepped up with a sensational finish – albeit possibly intended as a cross – from the right flank into the far top left corner to make it 3-2 and complete the comeback.

As you can see in the table above, Cantwell put on a show at Ibrox with a staggering six key passes and two 'big chances' created to go alongside his goal and assist.

The English star has offered far more than Tom Lawrence usually does in that position, as shown by the statistics in the table, and should now have nailed down his place in the XI moving into the last two matches.

Tom Lawrence

Lawrence has only produced two goals and three assists in 23 Premiership matches across the entire season, and Cantwell racked up almost half as many goal involvements in one match on Tuesday night.

The former Canaries whiz has now scored six goals and provided five assists in 23 league starts for the Light Blues this term, which illustrates how much more he offers than his Welsh teammate at the top end of the pitch.

He had been an unused substitute against Celtic last weekend and just proved that Clement should not drop him again, as the Gers missed his creative presence in their 2-1 defeat at Parkhead.

Fabio Silva and Todd Cantwell

The Scottish giants only mustered up one shot on target in that narrow loss and the attacking midfielder has proven time and again, including against Dundee, that he has the ability to make things happen in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

That is why Clement must not drop him down to the bench, barring a fitness issue, in either of the next two matches, and moving into the 2024/25 campaign.

Why 21-year-old Ross McCausland is now undroppable

McCausland should also now be considered undroppable for the Belgian head coach after he popped up with a fantastic performance down the right flank.

Dujon Sterling's absence provided the academy graduate with an opportunity to stake a claim for his place ahead of the final two matches, and for next season, and he grasped it with both hands.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

Rangers were in desperate need of a spark after the crowd began to voice their displeasure at being 2-0 down to Dundee in the first half, and the young winger was the man to step up in their time of need.

McCausland showed great invention, determination, and skill to pull one back just before half time as he capitalised on lackadaisical defensive work to steal in and prod the ball into the back of the net after a clever touch around the corner.

The 21-year-old whiz registered an 8.1 Sofascore rating out of 10 for his performance on the night, as he also went on to assist Wright's second with a quick break through the middle and pass to the Scottish forward on the left.

He completed five of his eight attempted dribbles and won seven of his 11 ground duels on the night, which speaks to his exciting and direct play as well as his desire to track back and work hard for the team.

The dynamo, who created two chances for Rangers, got the crowd on their feet with his goal, his dribbles, his assist, and his infectious work rate, which is why he should now be undroppable for Rangers.

Ross McCausland's 23/24 season in numbers

The former B team star has struggled to nail down a regular place in the lineup in the Premiership this season, with only half of his appearances coming as a starter.

He has featured in 28 league matches for the Scottish giants and started 14 of those, which shows that Clement has not yet trusted him to start week-in-week-out yet.

In those 14 starts, the talented speedster has now racked up two goals and four assists for his electric efforts, to go along with 1.4 tackles and interceptions per game.

McCausland has offered glimpses of his quality in possession as a scorer and a creator as well as off the ball with his work rate to track back and cut out opposition attacks.

The Northern Irish wizard, who scored nine goals in 41 B team matches for the academy, needs to play regularly to continue his progress and develop consistency in his game.

It is hard to be a consistent performer if you are not playing consistent minutes, due to the fluctuating game time and situations that the forward has been thrown into, and that is another reason why the manager should make him undroppable over these next two games.

Ross McCausland

Allowing McCausland to start the last two matches, making it three straight starts in total, would also provide the manager with an insight into how the youngster could cope with being a regular starter next season.

Rangers could seal "superb" signing to be their next Bassey

Philippe Clement will be eyeing a few signings ahead of the summer transfer window opening

ByRoss Kilvington May 13, 2024

This could then, therefore, be an opportunity for the former academy star to put his name forward to be considered a key part of the plans for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond as a starter, rather than as a back-up option.

Doubters to believers: A tribute to Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp

da cassino online: When I was 15 years old, I didn’t really know what I wanted from life, yada yada. But I did know that I loved football and I also knew that I adored Liverpool.

da bet7k: But we weren’t very good. Despite the thrilling Luis Suarez-charged success of the 2013/14 season, Liverpool had spent far too long adrift from the position of prominence and power that was fitting for a club of its stature.

Then Jurgen Klopp came along. The former Borussia Dortmund manager had enjoyed acclaim in his homeland, toppling Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in successive years before suffering a nosedive and calling time on his Signal Iduna Park career.

As Liverpool prepare to host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League for the last dance, fans will cheer Klopp’s name one final time, the 56-year-old having been roared on for the best part of nine years.

Were it not for him, I likely would not be writing this salute to a man who, seriously, has had such a profound impact on so many like myself.

Liverpool’s rise and rise coincided with my conclusion of studies at secondary school, and so I entered into the unknown with no clue where to head. But Klopp sculpted a journey that lifted the hearts of many, and so when it came to choosing a profession at this fledgling phase I followed my love for football and the joy that I had found through his forged connection with the club.

Of course, football’s inevitable circularity precludes lasting success – for most, anyway – and it would be foolish to only take joy in the good times, but Klopp proved that football is a life force that doesn’t need the rubber-stamping of silver objects to provide a sense of fulfilment and wonder that few things else can give to those stalwart supporters.

Klopp, to put it another way, proved that football’s beauty is an incredible, at times ineffable thing, and so this is a profession worth pursuing, for here is the palpable intensity of a person who gets it, a person who provided the balmy warmth that fans crave, to feel worth something, a part of something.

I will forever hold a dear place in my heart for Klopp, whose all-consuming passion for Liverpool and its success has created so many memories, leaving the city aglow. To see him step down from his duties is sad, yes, but it has certainly been worth the tears.

Self-indulgent stream of consciousness out of the way. But this is simply one story in a million of how Klopp stretched his wings down onto Liverpool and touched the lives of so many.

Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League

Some footballing figures exist beyond their stay. Klopp is the embodiment of a person who takes a club and its people beyond the mere enjoyment of watching people hoof an object between two sticks.

From doubters to believers

It’s quite hard to articulate just how much football means to many, many people. To those observing from afar, away from the prism, it all must look a bit naff.

Klopp must look a bit naff sometimes, even to those absorbed and engulfed in football and all its myriad facets. But that’s what makes him so brilliant, an irreplaceable part of Liverpool.

Be it his fury of post-match fist pumps, his scorn at the weather and how it stifled his team, or be it his hilarious in-match facial expressions, his explosion of passion when Mohamed Salah curls yet another strike beyond the hapless keeper, Alisson Becker contorts to make an acrobatic, all-important save.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The thing is, Liverpool is an emotional football club; it’s an emotional city. Klopp understood this, alighting in Merseyside following Brendan Rodgers’ dismissal.

There’s something very earnest about Liverpool and its path over the last nine years or so, a deep, visceral connection between player and club and fan and gaffer. Klopp transformed Anfield, wrapped the outfit in on itself with his quirks and convictions and his heart and his soul.

You could feel it in his very first game, which, inaptly perhaps, was a goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, a fixture that has since produced 62 goals from 19 matches in all competitions.

The starting line-up for that fixture tells the tale of Klopp’s dynasty, taking a – frankly – average team and turning it into something special. Sure, high-money signings were made along the way but Klopp battled tooth and nail against superior financial powers and cemented legendary status along the way.

What to pin down as the pinnacle of Klopp’s reign? Would it be the historic comeback against Barcelona – corner taken quickly is now a phrase synonymous with his reign – coming from behind to dismantle Lionel Messi’s team to advance to the final and dispatch Tottenham, a first slice of silverware under the 56-year-old?

Or perhaps, a few months into the new era, Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at home against West Bromwich Albion was the watershed moment, when Divock Origi salvaged a deflected last-gasp point and an incensed German manager ordered his team to link hands and celebrate in front of the Kop. It was a ridiculed reaction but Klopp was building something down Anfield Road and it paid dividends.

There are too many to count, but Klopp’s legacy is not defined by trophies and nor is it defined by statistics and tables and tallies, although he sits favourably on many. He changed lives, his influence transcends what it means to be a successful football manager in English football and his absence will leave a disconsolate piece missing from Liverpool and all involved.

The end of an era

But what if this isn’t the end at all? Possibly, Liverpool have simply entered the next phase of a glowing era that started nearly nine years ago, when a gegenpressing, thrash-metal style was inculcated into a football club crying for fresh life.

Klopp arrived and pulled Anfield’s denizens from the shadowed recess where they languished, nurtured them, enriched them and lifted them. This is not the end. This legacy endures.

Football is cyclical. Managers come; managers go. Players come; players go. Success arrives, ephemerally, and then disappears, flaking away and dissipating in the wind, like a sheet of paper caught aflame, as rivals shift ahead and revel in the glow of the limelight.

But while this cynical standpoint carries truth, it’s the fleeting nature of the success that makes it so special. Klopp knows this. The 56-year-old recently remarked that “other managers collect trophies, I collect relationships,” when reflecting on his time at the Anfield helm.

It was a comment that, naturally, was met with a measure of scorn from rivals, but Liverpool have won it all in the timeframe since the German’s advent. We’ve conquered all of Europe, and thanks to the outfit’s outgoing manager, we’re never going to stop.

Klopp, let’s not forget, restored Liverpool and gave it power and purpose as a behemoth of the global game once more. His mere presence has left fully-grown fans giddy with childish avidity, taking Liverpool’s hard-working, respite-seeking football faithful back to their springtime. To a better time. Away from life and all of its struggles. A utopia sculpted within Anfield’s four stands.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot

Arne Slot is the man to succeed Klopp, an unenviable task if there ever was one, and while he will come and he will go, Feyenoord’s successful head coach takes the reins of a club geared for more prosperity down the line.

Perhaps this is an end. Maybe that’s okay. It’s one end, an end as such that will close the door on a slice of history in one football club’s journey among many. But it isn’t the end.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

To say it’s the end would be to say that Jurgen Klopp and all that he stands for is no more, that this electric, larger-than-life German has been stripped away from the outfit’s DNA like bark from a tree.

So, no. Stand still. Crane your neck. Listen close. He’s here. Can you hear him? He’s in the crowd, cheering Liverpool on come August. It’s a booming, infectious noise, carried with care through the crowd’s song, passed through to the pitch, where Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold bellow and bay at their teammates, spurring them on.

This isn’t the end. Klopp has etched his name into Anfield’s very core, scrawling his teachings and tricks across Merseyside. And away from the figurative, he truly will return, for real, one day – lopsided grin, gleaming gnashers, awe-inspiring gaze and all. There to watch his club, always his club, to cheer them on.

He’s there, waving, taking it in, lapping it up. Klopp stands, cameras fixed, Anfield fixed, 61,000-odd pairs of eyes pinned on him. For he is here – perhaps he always will be. This isn’t the end.

He’s waving. And he is laughing. And we are singing.

Boehly lining up Chelsea swoop for £65m star who could be Palmer 2.0

Chelsea are back in action once again in the Premier League this weekend as they travel away from London to take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The Blues have three more games left to play in the division before the end of the 2023/24 campaign, and they are hoping to seal a place in either the Europa Conference League or the Europa League for next term.

Mauricio Pochettino's side did not have any European football to contend with this season but are currently sat in seventh place and only two points behind Newcastle United in sixth place.

This means that there is still plenty for the London-based giants to play for over their next few matches and every point will count in the race to secure a top-six finish.

However, Todd Boehly and his team are already looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window and what they could do to improve the playing squad for the 2024/25 campaign, with a Premier League star reportedly on their radar.

Chelsea's interest in French magician

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are one of the English clubs lining up a summer swoop to sign Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Michael Olise.

Boehly is eyeing up a deal to snap up the France U21 international to bolster Pochettino's options at the top end of the pitch, with the Blues said to be 'in the mix' for the Eagles star.

The report adds that Manchester United are one of the other teams interested in a possible move to sign the former Reading attacker ahead of next season.

Michael Olise

TEAMtalk also reveals that Palace will be willing to accept a total package of £65m for Olise this summer, and are prepared to listen to offers that start with £50m upfront and a further £15m in add-ons.

However, it is unclear who is currently winning the race between the Blues and the Red Devils, as they are both seemingly competing to land the left-footed whiz.

This revelation comes after TBRFootball reported earlier this week that Chelsea would be willing to offer a player in exchange for the French starlet, in order to subsidise the cost of any deal.

The outlet named centre-forward Armando Broja, who is currently on loan with Fulham, versatile defender Trevoh Chalobah, and former England international Raheem Sterling as three players who could be offered in exchange for Olise.

Boehly and Pochettino must now work to convince Palace to part ways with the exceptional midfielder as he could arrive as their next version of Cole Palmer, who also joined from a Premier League rival last summer before becoming a star at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer's route to stardom at Chelsea

The Blues swooped to sign the English youngster from Manchester City for a fee of £42.5m last summer, with an initial outlay of £40m for the talented gem.

During his time with the Cityzens, the left-footed maestro produced six goals and two assists in 41 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola.

This season, the England international has racked up a staggering 26 goals and 13 assists in 46 games for Chelsea in all competitions, which shows that he has taken his game to a whole new level since his move to Stamford Bridge.

As you can see in the table above, Palmer has been the outstanding attacking force within the Blues squad this season with his ability to both score and create goals from an attacking midfield position.

He has been directly involved in 30 Premier League goals, with 21 strikes and nine assists, and has showcased his ability to consistently make a huge impact in the final third.

At the age of 22, Palmer, who has created 14 'big chances' in the top-flight, also has plenty of years left ahead of him to develop further and improve as a player, which means that he could be a terrific player for Chelsea in the long-term, as well as the here and now.

Boehly could now land the club's next left-footed magician in an attacking midfield position by winning the race to sign Olise from Palace this summer.

Why Chelsea should sign Michael Olise

Like Palmer, the English-born wizard is a left-footed star who mainly operates on the right side of the attack but can also play as a number ten.

He has been in phenomenal form for Palace when fit this season in the Premier League and has showcased his ability to score and create goals from an attacking midfield position.

Olise currently ranks within the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.66), the top 4% for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.36), and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90 (6.31).

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

This shows that the Eagles star has been one of the best players in his position at scoring goals from open play, creating high-quality chances for his teammates, and being involved in shot-creating actions on a regular basis.

Olise, who was hailed as a possible "world beater" by analyst Ben Mattinson last month, has the quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch week-in-week-out, which suggests that he has the potential to replicate, to some degree, Palmer's success at Stamford Bridge.

As you can see in the table above, there has not been a significant difference in their output in the final third in the Premier League so far this season.

Palmer has scored and assisted goals more frequently than the Palace magician but there is not a huge gap between them when it comes to minutes per goal involvement.

At the age of 22, Olise is also another player who would come in to make an immediate impact whilst also having the time left ahead of him to be a star for many more years to come.

Chelsea line up move for "monster" £125k-p/w Petrovic replacement

The Blues are reportedly eyeing up a possible swoop for the Premier League goalkeeper.

Therefore, Boehly and Chelsea should swoop to sign the young maestro as he has already proven his quality in the Premier League and could arrive as their next left-footed magician who can score and assist goals consistently.

England squad diversity shows efforts to address racism in cricket, says Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan has backed the ECB’s efforts to foster a more inclusive culture in English cricket, but admits that stories such as Azeem Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism at Yorkshire demonstrate how much further the sport has to go to truly embrace equal opportunities.Speaking on the eve of the first T20I against Australia, Morgan – who was born in Dublin and played for Ireland for three years before qualifying for England in 2009 – said that the diversity of England’s World Cup-winning squad had not only showed the value of embracing different cultures but, in his opinion, it offered a fairer reflection of the current status of English cricket.”When I hear these stories I’m surprised to start with,” Morgan said. “But also, in light of these stories coming out, the ECB have been active in trying to rectify and become more diverse and create equal opportunity for everybody.”I think given the squad of players we have and the guys of different cultures, backgrounds, different races, I think the diverse nature of it really does epitomise where English cricket is at.”In addition to Morgan, England’s current squad includes three players of Pakistani origin in Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and the stand-by Saqib Mahmood; two who were born in Barbados in Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan, and three of southern African background in Dawid Malan and the Curran brothers. And speaking immediately after the World Cup victory last July, Morgan had responded to an enquiry about the “luck of the Irish” in the closing stages of that remarkable contest by saying, semi-seriously, that Rashid had told him that “Allah is with us”.”It actually epitomises our team,” Morgan said at the time. “With quite diverse cultures and backgrounds, and guys growing up in different countries. To find humour in the situation that we were in at the time was pretty cool.”That diversity, he added, had been reflected in the ethnic mix of the fans that England encountered on their World Cup travels, as they played their fixtures in each of the tournament’s major venues and found support from a range of different backgrounds.Players and match officials take a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign•Getty Images

“I think travelling around during last year’s World Cup and going to 10 different grounds up and down the country and watching the supporters flood in of all different races, all following England was great,” he said.”It made us all feel extremely proud. One of the noted things we talked about when we watched back the World Cup final and the camera pans to the crowd – people in England shirts are not all white. They are of different races and for us, as a team, I think that’s quite a thing we can be proud of.”Nevertheless, Rafiq’s comments – which drew a promise of an official inquiry from Yorkshire – include claims that senior players, including one of his club captains, had been “openly racist”. They follow a similarly explosive testimony from Michael Carberry, the former England opener, whose claims that “black people are not important to the ECB” forced the board to embrace some “uncomfortable truths”, according to the chief executive, Tom Harrison. In a subsequent statement, the ECB said that they were “deeply troubled” by Rafiq’s experiences, and reiterated the board’s commitment to “making the changes needed to make cricket a game for everyone”. Harrison is understood to be taking a personal involvement in his case.”Azeem’s story is similar to some of the experiences we have heard about during the Black Lives Matter movement and demonstrates how much work is needed across the game, sport and society as a whole to eradicate racism,” said the ECB.Morgan also recognised that more needed to be done to ensure that such situations get dealt with more proactively when they first arise, but reflected on the England team’s response to the Black Lives Matter movement as proof that they were making a effort to keep the issue visible. Players on both sides during the Tests against West Indies and the ODIs against Ireland took a knee in support of the movement, although this was not done during the Pakistan series and will not be repeated against Australia.ALSO READ: Yorkshire promise independent review into Azeem Rafiq allegations“I think our display throughout the Ireland series [showed] our ambition to try and create more sustainable awareness around our fight against racism and the creation of equal opportunities and equality in sport,” Morgan said. “It’s important to drive that forward because it shouldn’t exist in society. When people talk about it they should feel comfortable coming out to talk about it – we want everybody to know that.”An area where we can get better is telling people our story more, getting comfortable talking about growing up in a different country or growing up in a different environment within this country, and our journey to where we are today,” he added.”There’s not one player that’s had an easy ride throughout this. It’s very difficult to get into an England cricket changing-room or an England cricket shirt. But even more so by coming from a diverse background, it creates different challenges.”

That blew the chance of a home semi-final, meaning they headed back to Melbourne to face the Renegades, where Dan Christian ripped the match from them. What’s changed for the season? It has been a reasonably quiet off-season for the Sixers, although there was the headline of them securing Steven Smith for a handful of matches at the back-end of the tournament, which could include the finals if the Sixers make it, while Josh Hazlewood has also returned after a gap of five years. They may need to look for overseas replacements at that stage, however, with Tom Curran and James Vince likely to be involved in England’s limited-overs matches in South Africa.Australia impactAlongside Smith not appearing until after the one-day tour of India, Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood won’t be available until the Test series against New Zealand ends, and Hazlewood could be delayed further if recalled to the ODI side. But apart from that only a potential call-up to the one-day side for Sean Abbott would disrupt their plans.Player to watchJosh Philippe passed 300 runs last season but that still felt a little underwhelming for the talent he possesses. At 22, he still has plenty of time on his side, but a strong campaign this year could propel him into the planning for next year’s T20 World Cup. After a promising start to the Marsh Cup for Western Australia, he was left out of the final, so the BBL will be crucial for keeping the season on track.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Daniel Hughes has been the most consistent batsmen for the Sixers in the last three seasons. He has scored more than 200 runs in each of the last three seasons averaging in excess of 30. His strike rate over the last three seasons (121), however, is the lowest for a top-order batsman to have played a minimum of 400 balls.Chris Green celebrates a Big Bash wicket for the Thunder•Getty Images

There was an element of controversy to that as they were well on top in the match against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba when the lights went out. A brilliant century from Callum Ferguson secured a big chase against the Perth Scorchers but they were thrashed by the Sydney Sixers to all but end their hopes. What’s changed for the season? There have been two strong overseas signings in Hales and Morris, while Chris Tremain, after his move from the Melbourne Renegades, bolsters the pace attack, which had been a weakness. Alex Ross has also come in from the Brisbane Heat.Australia impactUsman Khawaja, who has committed his future to the Thunder, may be available for the whole campaign after losing his Test place, although he could still feature in the ODI squad to tour India in mid-January. Pat Cummins, who played once last season, will not feature this season.Player to watchMatthew Gilkes is a rising star, having given glimpses of his talent for New South Wales this season to follow his 51 off 38 balls on T20 debut for the Thunder last summer when the club went through a succession of wicketkeepers. With Jos Buttler not returning, there is a chance for someone to grab hold of the wicketkeeping spot, and Gilkes will compete with Jay Lenton although he could also play as a batsman.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Since the start of 2017, there have been 157 bowlers who have bowled more than 200 balls in the powerplay. Chris Green has the best economy rate (6.04) for a spinner and the second best among all bowlers, only behind India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar (5.89). With the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, Green’s performance will hold the key towards Thunder’s hopes as well as his chances to make the Australia squad.

Rangers make approach for "quality" Matondo partner alongside Diomande deal

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action tonight, three weeks following their last game in the top flight due to the winter break.

They travel to Easter Road to face Hibernian, and they were the opposition for Philippe Clement’s first game in charge of the Ibrox side back in October, which they went on to win 4-0.

A repeat of that scoreline tonight would be a perfect way for the club to resume their domestic campaign and really push Celtic over the coming months.

While the fixtures will be coming thick and fast, Clement still has eight days left to bring in another player or two to bolster his squad and this will be at the forefront of his mind.

Rangers are close to signing Mohamed Diomande

The Ibrox side secured a loan deal for Fabio Silva at the end of December and this move filled the supporters with plenty of anticipation that several more players would arrive in Glasgow.

The previous few weeks have been barren with regard to signings, yet the Gers made a breakthrough at the beginning of this week, and it now looks as though midfielder Mohamed Diomande is close to joining.

According to Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack, the FC Nordsjaelland gem is expected to arrive in Scotland today in order to finalise his £4.5m move from the Danish club and this is a big statement of intent by Clement, especially in January.

The manager has stated that he would not be “content or confident” for the second half of the campaign if he does not add to his squad before next Thursday. Could this suggest more signings are close?

Rangers’ search for a new left-back

One area that desperately needs to be addressed is the left side of defence, especially with Ridvan Yilmaz being linked with a move away and Borna Barisic’s contract expiring in the summer.

This suggests Clement will be looking to bring in another left-back before the window slams shut next week, and it looks as though he may have made a breakthrough.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, the Gers have made an approach to sign FC Twente defender Gijs Smal this month.

The Dutchman, like Barisic, has entered into the final few months of his current deal and, according to the report from the Netherlands, it does not look like he is about to sign an extension to stay at the club.

This may tempt Clement into luring Smal to Glasgow for a knockdown fee this month as he continues to build his squad for the challenges ahead, and it could turn out to be a solid signing, especially with his impressive performances for the Eredivisie clubs.

Not only that, but he could link up well with Rabbi Matondo down the left flank during the second half of the season and this could benefit Clement greatly.

Normally, Abdallah Sima would be the first-choice left-winger, yet the on-loan Brighton and Hove Albion gem returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with an injury and is expected to be out for the foreseeable future.

This means Matondo will be called upon more often by Clement, and he has finally settled into life at Rangers following a difficult debut season.

Across 17 matches in all competitions, the Welsh winger has scored twice and registered three assists. Considering he has started just seven matches, this is a more than decent return and if given regular game time now due to Sima’s injury, he could thrive.

Smal has displayed his attacking qualities throughout his professional career, registering 47 goal contributions – 13 goals and 34 assists – in just 177 senior matches.

This works out as a goal involvement once every 3.7 matches, which is a wonderful ratio for a left-back.

Gijs Smal

During the 2022/23 campaign, Smal excelled from an attacking perspective, averaging 1.6 key passes per game while creating 16 big chances, and it certainly indicates that he is a major threat on the left flank.

His bursting runs into the attacking third could benefit Matondo and the duo would create a formidable partnership that would surely cause chaos to defences all over the country.

The stats that show why Gijs Smal would be a good signing for Rangers

These performances last season proved that he is an attack-minded full-back who is no stranger to bombing up and down the left flank and this could fit in well with Clement’s philosophy.

The 6 foot gem has missed 12 games due to a calf injury this term, but when he has played, the 26-year-old has been impressive.

Indeed, he currently ranks fifth among the squad for successful dribbles per game (0.7) along with ranking seventh for key passes per game (1.2), and while these stats are not as impressive as those from the 2022/23 season, it is clear his injury has disrupted any momentum.

Having started the previous nine league matches for Twente, it looks as though he is back fit and healthy and this will be good news for Clement.

Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson has praised the defender amid his recent links to the Glasgow side, paying particular attention to his qualities going forward.

He said: “Smal would provide quality deliveries from the left hand side while also being willing to actually run to the by line. He’s 5 years younger than Barisic and offers a bit more pace and aggression on that side.”

It looks as though the Dutchman is capable of replacing Barisic from an attacking perspective and this is certainly what Clement is after in his fullbacks.

A move for Smal makes perfect sense, especially being able to potentially bring him to the club for a minimal fee this month, giving him plenty of time to adapt.

Adding another signing or two alongside that of Diomande could give the Light Blues a big boost in their chances of securing another trophy or two during the second half of the season.

Will it be enough to see them reel in Celtic and be crowned champions? Only time will tell.
