Allrounder Ryan McLaren retires from first-class cricket

The 35-year-old allrounder will continue playing white-ball cricket, he said on Twitter

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jan-2019South African allrounder Ryan McLaren, 35, announced Thursday that he is retiring from first-class cricket. McLaren posted a screengrab on Twitter where he said it was the “right time” and that it was “time for some white ball fun.””I have learned from many to know when it’s the right time. The time has come for me to retire from first-class cricket. I’m grateful to share a changeroom with some of the best our country has produced. Words cannot describe how grateful I am for the support I have had from my wife, family, coaches and teammates both in SA and in county cricket. I have absolutely loved every part of what this game has taught me…time for some white ball fun now,” McLaren’s screengrab read.

The fast-bowling allrounder enjoyed reasonable success in limited-overs cricket for South Africa between 2009 and 2014, before being left out of their 2015 World Cup squad. He played only two Tests, which came four years apart. During his second Test against Australia in 2014, he picked up a mild concussion after being hit by a bouncer, and missed the rest of what would be his last Test series. He is, however, a well-travelled first-class cricketer. He debuted with Easterns in 2003-04 under Allan Donald, played for the Knights from 2005 to 2014, and briefly moved to Dolphins, before returning to finish with Knights, who he represented at the start of the year against Cape Cobras. McClaren also has stints in County cricket, including one as a Kolpak player for Kent between 2007 and 2009. Most recently, he played for Hampshire and Lancashire. In all, McLaren played 154 first-class matches to score 6298 runs at 33.86 and took 459 wickets at 27.61.

Padres Found the Wildest Way to Get a Walk-Off Win

The San Diego Padres have been struggling lately and when things aren't going well for you, sometimes a little luck can be exactly what you need.

That's just what the Padres got in the bottom of the 11th inning Monday night at home against the Miami Marlins when they found a wild way to get a walk-off win.

With one out and runners on first and third, Miami's Cade Gibson threw a wild pitch that bounced away from his catcher. Nick Fortes was able to quickly get to the ball and tried to make a play at the plate but San Diego's Tyler Wade slid in safely to end the game.

Here's how that played out:

The Padres are just 3-7 in their last 10 games so maybe this type of win is just what they need to get things going in the right direction.

Jadeja drags gripping Test into final session, England one away from win

Jadeja scored his fourth successive half-century to leave England frustrated

India had two wickets standing at the end of lunch on day five, and still 81 runs away. But Ravindra Jadeja refused to let them buckle, scoring his fourth successive half-century and from the fact he didn’t bring out the sword celebration, it was clear that he had other priorities.Ben Stokes was in the middle of bowling himself into the ground, a 10-over spell leading England to tea after an 9.2-over spell had made them favourites in the morning. Neither man deserves to come off second best in this battle, which also included a bizarre moment when Stokes, in addition to figuring out where to set his fields and whether his body could take the workload he was putting himself through, had to sign off on Jadeja’s bathroom schedule. He did. Begrudgingly. India were nine down at the time and 33 runs away.Tea was pushed half an hour back when England broke an eighth-wicket partnership that was stubborn enough to last 132 balls and eke out 35 runs. Jasprit Bumrah faced 55 balls. Only twice has he faced more deliveries in a Test innings. His new-ball partner Mohammed Siraj showed just as much heart, standing up to a short-ball barrage with two short legs and a leg slip crowding him. Jadeja’s leadership helped India’s tail survive and now they are tantalisingly close – 30 runs from victory.Earlier, Jofra Archer picked up Rishabh Pant in the third over of play. Stokes struck from the other end to dismiss India’s best batter in this game, KL Rahul. Nitish Kumar Reddy stemmed the England tide and it looked like they would be able to go through to lunch with both of their allrounders standing firm but Chris Woakes took the ball and broke through. “Only a matter of time,” Harry Brook said while he was trying to unsettle the batters. He remains correct, but England are definitely starting to feel the pressure now.

VIDEO: Eberechi Eze christened as 'Snake Hips' by former team-mate as reason why so many footballers 'love' Arsenal's newest hero revealed

Eberechi Eze used to be referred to as ‘Snake Hips’ by his former team-mates due to his incredible dribbling ability and agility, according to ex-Queens Park Rangers colleague Nedum Onuoha. The playmaker, who has been capped 13 times by England, is now lighting up the Premier League and Champions League with Arsenal after completing a summer transfer from Crystal Palace.

  • How Eze got to QPR following teenage heartbreak

Eze is widely regarded as one of the top flight’s most gifted attackers, but he has had to work hard to put himself in this position. He was released by Arsenal, Fulham, Reading and Millwall as an academy player, before finding a loving home at QPR in the Championship. It was in west London where he rubbed shoulders with Onuoha for two seasons before the veteran defender headed to Major League Soccer to finish his career with Real Salt Lake.

  • Reason behind Eze's nickname revealed

Speaking on the Full Time Therapy podcast, Onuoha revealed how he was wary of Eze’s talent even at a young age, and how he is thrilled for his former team-mate to be thriving on football’s biggest stages.

"We used to call him ‘Snake Hips’!" Onuoha said. "He would just come towards you, give you one of these [shoulder drops] and you always take the bait on one of them. The reason why lots of people who have played with him speak so highly of him is because he’s a really good guy and he loves football. Like I saw him after the FA Cup final, and he’s like, ‘I can’t believe it, I never thought I’d be here’. All this stuff. This is someone at 27 where, in theory, the love of the game could have very well left the chat a long time ago. He adores it, a really good person."

  • Eze distraught after Arsenal rejection

Eze’s love of Arsenal made his release from the club as a teenager all the more heartbreaking. In a 2020 interview with , Eze said: "I was 13 [when I was released]. That was the worst one. I remember crying in my room for a solid week, my mum telling me that it’s going to be OK but not being able to get over it. Then I went to Fulham and I was finally starting to enjoy my football again. We played Arsenal a few months later but, when I went over to shake the academy manager’s hand, I started welling up. All the feelings came back."

Eze first joined QPR in 2016 and spent four years at Loftus Road before securing a Premier League move, joining Crystal Palace in the south of the capital city. It was at Palace where Eze made himself a household name in his home country, helping the Eagles up the table and eventually playing a starring role in their FA Cup triumph last season, securing the club’s first piece of major silverware.

Supergiant missteps

Should Tahir bowl more in the Powerplay? And should Pune look to top up their bowling resources? Aakash Chopra answers these questions and more

Aakash Chopra26-Apr-2017Du Plessis for Stokes?
If you were to pick Rising Pune Supergiant’s strength, it will be their batting. They are so well stocked that Manoj Tiwary, who has the highest strike-rate in the team, has just not been able to play enough balls. On Wednesday, with Ben Stokes unavailable, there was an opportunity to play an extra bowler. Since Indian players form the core of the Kolkata Knight Riders batting – and with a pinch-hitter in Sunil Narine at the top – it would have been best had the legspinner Adam Zampa or the fast bowler Lockie Ferguson come into the Rising Pune XI. Instead, they picked an extra batsman in Faf du Plessis.KKR also pulled a surprise by picking three spinners. Even if they had to rest Nathan Coulter-Nile to manage his workload, they could have played Trent Boult. How should a captain handle limited pace-bowling resources?
When a team has only two fast bowlers, the captain will have a lot of manipulating to do. Ideally, he can use three overs of pace in the Powerplay and keep five handy for the rest of the innings. Gautam Gambhir, though, has taken a different path. He let Chris Woakes, Umesh Yadav and Narine – three of his best bowlers – bowl two overs each in the Poweplay. While it did not cost KKR against Pune, it could still lead to a situation where they might not be able to attack in the middle overs as much as they used to.Why did Kuldeep bowl the 18th over?
It was brave of Gambhir to give the 18th over to Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wristspinner had conceded 11 runs in his last over, which included a short ball that MS Dhoni pulled for six.At the time Gambhir had two overs each of Umesh and Woakes, but he went with Kuldeep in search of a wicket. It could have been a hugely expensive over – Dhoni was set and he was brought on strike to face the second ball – but unorthodox bowlers are worth a gamble. Kuldeep stumped Dhoni and Tiwary with googlies and conceded only five runs. Why did Tiwary bat ahead of du Plessis and Christian?
Even though Tiwary scored only 1 off 2 balls, the move to send him ahead of two overseas recruits was the right decision. Tiwary has been Rising Pune’s best batsman in the end overs and T20 cricket is about form over reputation. Why did Washington Sundar have a bad game?
Washington Sundar is a batsman who bowls a bit of offspin and yet he only went for 45 runs in seven overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. This was largely because he bowled quick, flat and maintained really tight lines. To dominate bowlers like Sundar, a batsman has to go aerial without using his feet. Gambhir profited by cutting and driving, and Uthappa used his power, staying in his crease and lofting Sundar down the ground for back-to-back sixes. Why did Tahir not bowl in the Powerplay?
Imran Tahir has only bowled three overs in the Powerplay in this IPL. While he has been economical and has picked up wickets in the middle overs, it is a little surprising that Rising Pune aren’t using him in the most difficult phase of a T20 innings. One could understand the thought process if the team has many outstanding bowling options but that is not the case.Tahir came on to bowl in the seventh over and conceded 22 runs off his first 12 deliveries. Smith could have kept him and pushed for a wicket, but to save runs he turned to seam bowlers Dan Christian and Rahul Tripathi.

Tottenham now considering "surprise" move for £120k-per-week Chelsea player

Tottenham Hotspur are now considering a shock move for one player from Chelsea, as Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou scours for his much-needed second signing of the January window.

Tottenham pursuing new centre-back in January

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are set to return from injury sooner rather than later, in what will be a serious boost for the under-fire Postecoglou, who’s seen his defence absolutely ripped to shreds in recent months.

For the longest time, Postecoglou was forced to cope with just one fit and available centre-back in Radu Dragusin, with Ben Davies also just returning from an injury which kept him out of the side for weeks.

Teenage Archie Gray was thrown straight into the deep end as a result, partnering Dragusin at the heart of Postecoglou’s defence in an unfamiliar role, and the Lilywhites boss will be very keen to avoid a scenario like this again as he seeks to resurrect Tottenham’s faltering campaign.

It is safe to say Spurs’ lack of depth has been seriously exposed, especially at centre-back, with reliable media sources claiming that Tottenham have been looking for another central defender to come in and bolster Postecoglou’s backline.

This comes amid technical director Johan Lange’s widely reported pursuit of a new forward, so the supporters will be hopeful their side can land one or two major outfield signings before deadline day on February 3.

Tottenham were reportedly targeting Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens, before the Uzbek’s high-profile move to Premier League champions Man City, while it is also believed that Lange could test AC Milan’s resolve with a bid for Fikayo Tomori (The Boot Room).

There are options for Postecoglou’s side heading into the final stretch of this window, and they’re also weighing up a rival defender in Chelsea ace Tosin Adarabioyo.

Tottenham now considering move for Chelsea defender Tosin

According to CaughtOffside, the £120,000-per-week former Fulham star has found his way on to Spurs’ list of centre-back targets.

Once a key player at Craven Cottage, Tosin’s opportunities at Stamford Bridge have been pretty limited overall since he sealed a free transfer there last summer. The Englishman was largely a bench player until early December last year, with Wesley Fofana’s long-term injury increasing his chances under Enzo Maresca ten-fold.

Chelsea's TosinAdarabioyocelebrates after the match

The 27-year-old has started five out of their last seven Premier League games, even scoring against Wolves last weekend, but Chelsea have now recalled Trevoh Chalobah and remain in pursuit of Marc Guehi (Mick Brown).

He could well find himself back on the fringes of Maresca’s team, depending on developments, and Tottenham are believed to be monitoring this situation closely. As per CaughtOffside, Tottenham are considering a “surprise” January move for Tosin, and it isn’t hard to see why given his top flight experience and atttributes suited to Postecoglou’s high line.

“He is fast, strong in the air, and has the quality to look forward behind the line for the next pass,” said Pep Guardiola on Tosin.

“He is a nice guy, his mind is open, he listens, he trains every day like it’s the last training of his life and I like to work with these kinds of players a lot.”

Mata 2.0: Man Utd make contact to sign "world-class" star who’s like Cunha

da luck: Juan Mata is a player who will always be fondly remembered at Manchester United for his time as a player, starring in the first team over an eight-year period.

da apostaganha: The Spaniard joined the Red Devils from Chelsea back in January 2014 for a reported £37.1m, a bargain given his impressive form for the club – going on to make over 275 appearances in the process.

Mata also scored 51 times for United, including a scissor kick against bitter rivals Liverpool which secured all three points and a rare victory at Anfield.

Juan Mata

He would eventually leave back in 2022, joining Turkish outfit Galatasaray on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, 11 years on from his big-money transfer to join the club, new boss Ruben Amorim has the opportunity to repeat such a deal in a move for one Premier League star.

Man Utd make contact to sign PL star this month

According to The Sportzine, Man United have made contact with the representatives of Chelsea star João Félix over a potential move to Old Trafford this month.

The Portuguese only moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer, joining the Blues for a fee in the region of £46m with Conor Gallagher moving in the opposite direction as a result.

However, it’s not been plain sailing for the 25-year-old since his big-money transfer, starting just three times in the Premier League, potentially opening the door to an early departure this month.

The report claims that he would be allowed to depart the capital this month if an acceptable offer was presented their way, but fails to mention what fee Enzo Maresca’s side would demand for his services.

Felix would certainly be a superb addition to Amorim’s side, bolstering his compatriot’s chances of being a success in Manchester, whilst also being their own version of a player who’s seriously in demand this month.

Why Joao Felix could be Man United’s own Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha has been a man in serious demand this month, unsurprisingly so given his form for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League throughout 2024/25.

The Brazilian has scored ten goals and registered four assists in his 21 outings to date, with Arsenal and Nottingham Forest two of the sides interested in a move for his signature.

The 25-year-old has also previously been on the radar of United in recent weeks, but their interest appears to have cooled with other targets such as Felix popping up in the meantime.

Cunha’s record in the top flight would undoubtedly give supporters another reason to crave his signing, but despite his lack of minutes to date, the Chelsea ace has managed to outperform him in numerous key areas – leading to FBref dubbing the former Atlético star as a similar player to the Brazilian.

Felix, who’s previously been dubbed “world-class” by former England international Glen Johnson, may have managed fewer combined goals and assists, but has produced more progressive carries and passes per 90 to date – showcasing his attacking prowess this season despite his lack of minutes.

He’s also managed to achieve a higher pass completion rate, along with more completed take-ons per 90, highlighting his ability to create opportunities within the final third.

His lack of game time at Chelsea since his move could allow the Red Devils to get themselves a hugely talented player for a fraction of the price this month, supercharging Amorim’s ambitions at the club in the process.

Whilst it’s unclear how much any deal would cost the hierarchy this month, he’s showcased that even with limited minutes, he’s capable of starring, potentially holding the key to transforming their fortunes in the coming months.

MLC start under threat after dispute between organisers and USA Cricket

Days after Major League Cricket’s (MLC) landmark player draft, a sanctioning dispute between USA Cricket and league organisers threatens to disrupt the start of the tournament this July. The dispute has reached the ICC, who has told its members to not issue NOCs to their players until the issue is resolved. In this latest manifestation of the age-old tradition of administrative strife on US soil, it has emerged that USA Cricket has not yet sanctioned either the MLC or Minor League Cricket (MiLC), the tournaments that are seen as the next big step in the evolution of the game in the country. That did not prevent the MLC from announcing a host of big-name foreign signings – including Aaron Finch, Marcus Stoinis and Quinton de Kock – in a draft in Houston on Sunday. But concerns are growing, especially as the ICC is currently classifying the events as “disapproved”.USA Cricket has previously given sanction to MiLC, for both 2021 and 2022, but in a communication recently sent out by the ICC’s operations department to Members, officials have flagged the issue for overseas players wishing to play in both competitions.”Members may be aware of the following two events that are proposed to be played in the USA,” the ICC said of the events, both administered by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the parent company which signed a 50-year commercial rights agreement with USA Cricket in 2019.Related

“Applications for sanction have been submitted to USA Cricket, but these events have not yet been sanctioned by USA Cricket. Consequently, without a sanction from the host member, both events are currently deemed to be Disapproved Cricket and as such, Members should not issue NOCs to their players to participate in either event.”On March 1, in a statement from USA Cricket, the interim board chairman Atul Rai said that the board of directors were “concerned about the plight of the players and the owners” of MiLC, though what exactly those concerns are has not been specified.”However, they are equally concerned about the operations of Minor League by ACE without any accountability and its failure to follow the USA Cricket guidelines, not to mention the lack of communication,” the statement continued. “USA Cricket has sent a letter to ACE that includes several questions on Minor League operations by ACE that we hope to get a quick response timely to allow for sanctioning of the event.”Rai was on the board in 2019 and voted in favour of signing the commercial partnership with ACE at the time. Then board chairman Paraag Marathe was the main driver of the deal and rubber-stamped the tournament going ahead in 2021 and 2022. Rai left the board in February 2020, but won an election to return in September 2022 and immediately replaced Marathe as chairman. Rai’s stance toward ACE and MLC seems to have changed in his second term.Observers see this dispute as a negotiating ploy by USA Cricket to revise terms of the original short-form agreement signed with ACE in 2019. In that agreement, ACE keeps 95% of all gross revenues generated by MLC while USA Cricket receives the remaining 5%.Organisers say, however, that the tournament is on course to begin its inaugural season on July 13, as is MiLC for a third season from June 10.”We are aware of the recent letter that the ICC sent to its membership regarding the status of MiLC and MLC,” MLC tournament director Justin Geale told ESPNcricinfo. “We don’t believe the letter was a warning at all, inasmuch as it was merely factual informational that the events are not yet sanctioned as the member boards need that confirmation in order to issue NOCs to the players.”We have been in regular communication with all concerned parties regarding the ICC sanctioning of these events for the past several weeks. These events already have the necessary sanctioning from USA Cricket under our agreement with them, and the completed ICC sanctioning applications for MiLC and MLC are presently with USA Cricket.”We have been assured that they will be processed in a speedy manner once received by the ICC. We believe that the recent staffing changes at USA Cricket may have contributed to any delays. However, we fully expect the events to receive complete sanctioning in the coming days, as all parties agree that MiLC and MLC are very important to the growth and development of cricket in the US.”Geale’s reference to staffing changes alludes to the resignation of USA Cricket’s interim CEO Vinay Bhimjiani over the weekend, after five months in the role.Rai told ESPNcricinfo that there were other outstanding issues that had prevented them from moving forward on the sanctioning. This includes USA Cricket’s desire for more favourable revisions from the short-form agreement, before signing a finalised long-form agreement between the two parties.”The board appointed a five-member working group to negotiate the terms of the Long-form agreement and they have started the conversation as I understand,” Rai told ESPNcricinfo. “I am not part of that committee and since the CEO resigned, he is no longer involved in the negotiations. Therefore, any sanctioning or approval will have to come as a recommendation from the committee to the board.”As for the 50-year commercial partnership agreement, the working group had sent a letter to ACE outlining the areas of problems in the contract as well as the failures. While there was a response from ACE, I believe that there is much to be discussed before any final agreement can be reached.”
