Kieron Pollard: 'I have no intentions of not playing international cricket'

West Indies’ white-ball captain Kieron Pollard has insisted that he has no intentions of retiring from international cricket after his side were knocked out of contention for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Pollard was among the West Indies seniors who had struggled to adapt to the UAE conditions; he managed only 46 runs in four innings at a strike rate of under 87. West Indies, who entered the competition as the defending champions, suffered a premature exit when they lost to an already knocked-out Sri Lanka team by 20 runs.”Well, personally… I don’t set personal goals for personal glory. I play cricket to win cricket matches each and every time,” Pollard said at the post-match press conference. “We came to the World Cup to win and we haven’t done that. Unless you’re part of decisions that are going to get rid of me or fire me or retire me, as I stand right now, I have no intentions of not playing international cricket. One tournament or a couple of bad games don’t make a summer. And for me personally, there’s a lot of mileage in my legs as an individual.”There are people in different scenarios who make decisions and when it comes to that [captaincy] question, I can’t make that decision… but again we have a tendency as things go badly, the easiest thing is to blame or chop and change and do different things. But we accept that. I accept that and I take it on the chin and sometimes you have to absorb the pressure before you apply [it]. But personally as an individual I’ve played a lot of good cricket in the last 18 months or two years or so. So, three-four games [are] not going to deter Kieron Pollard.”

Pollard rued West Indies’ “sloppy” performance in the field, exploited by an inexperienced yet talented Sri Lanka side to put up an above-par total of 189 for 3. In response, West Indies lost Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis and Roston Chase in the powerplay. Despite counterattacking innings from vice-captain Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer, the rapidly rising asking rate was too much to overcome for West Indies.’It was a good batting track,” Pollard said. “If we had sort of restricted them to 170-175, I thought that was about par on this track; [we] gave them a couple of extra runs, and then we weren’t able to sort of finish off the innings. The batting has struggled throughout the entire tournament, and it has been disappointing. Obviously, we’ve been singing the same song over and over and it’s something that hasn’t helped us – the way that we’ve batted throughout the tournament. We just have to accept that we weren’t good enough.”Pooran, who was bumped up to No. 3 after batting at No. 7 against Bangladesh, made the early running in the powerplay, claiming 32 of the 52 runs West Indies scored in the first six overs. While Dushmantha Chameera tricked him with a cutter for 46, Hetmyer pressed on to hit an unbeaten 81 off 54 balls. Pollard identified the two batters as a key part of West Indies’ T20 future but challenged them to produce such performances more often.”I think that [the progress of Pooran and Hetmyer] is very, very important,” Pollard said. “Nicholas getting the opportunity to bat up the order. Last game, he was full of confidence, and we just decided to sort of ride on that confidence and just try something different. I think he gave us a good start in the powerplay and after the powerplay. Obviously, he wasn’t able to carry on, but that is a positive sign for us in the right direction.”And then Hetmyer – this is what we know Shimron can do. He comes in and manoeuvres the ball at the start. He’s a powerful individual and if we can get these sort of performances from these guys consistently, I think it will augur well for us in the future. But it’s not just the glimpse, the task is to do that on a consistent basis. The glimpse is good enough and it’s something we definitely look at going forward.”In order to unearth new talents, Pollard reckoned that West Indies should bring back the regional T20 tournament, in addition to the franchise-based CPL, to expand the pool of players.”I think it’s something that we have to look at. I think it’s something that has plagued us over a period of time for the last ten years or so, we’ve had sort of the same guys playing T20 and dominating as we go along,” he said. “One of the things we need to do is, especially in the Caribbean, we need to have another tournament other than CPL where we can unearth new talents. When we had the Caribbean T20, that was an opportunity to bring you talent from different parts of the Caribbean to be able to have the nucleus for this last generation or so… Since CPL has come in, yes it’s a franchise-based system, but we’ve only had the opportunity to recycle the same players over and over again.”So, it’s something that we need to look at but there are some cricketers and a lot of young cricketers looking forward to playing and contributing to West Indies cricket. And it’s something that I’m personally excited about. It’s the end of a generation, but there needs to be a lot of conversation that needs to take place on how you’re going to make the transformation from club cricket or even CPL to international cricket because there’s a big step-up. So in between, we need to have another tournament if you look around the world, there are different tournaments that different teams play so that they can unearth new talents.”

Louis Kimber confirmed his promise with another half century to lead a partial Leicestershire fightback on the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship Division Three match with Worcestershire at New Road. The 24-year-old earned his opportunity to play Championship cricket for the first time after some impressive performances during the latter stages of the Royal London Cup.He followed up his unbeaten 59 against Sussex at the Uptonsteel County Ground by helping the Foxes to recover from 133 for 6 to 222 all out in 82.3 overs.Worcestershire lost opener Daryl Mitchell, playing his final match before retiring, for eight but Jake Libby had time to complete 1,000 runs for the summer as his side closed on 30 for 1.Kimber top-scored with 71 from 150 balls with one six and 10 boundaries before he fell to Worcestershire club captain, Joe Leach, with the first delivery of the second new ball. He signed his first professional contract in May and has been studying for a Masters in Marketing at Loughborough University.Leach continued his recent good form with 3 for 38 from 17.5 overs while young spinner Josh Baker again demonstrated his potential with 2 for 31 from 20 overs. It was a good cricket wicket with enough encouragement for the seamers if they put the ball in the right areas and showing early signs of turn but also with enough pace to allow batsmen to play their shots.Leicestershire handed a debut to Sam Bates after regular keeper Harry Swindells and Sam Evans were forced to self isolate. Leach took the new ball for Worcestershire in his final official match as club captain and struck in his second over.Hassan Azad pushed forward and nicked through to Mitchell who held a sharp catch away to his right at second slip. Leach could have picked up a second wicket when Rishi Patel on 14 was dropped by Mitchell but it did not prove costly.Ed Barnard came into the attack for Leach and his fourth ball accounted for Patel, who lofted a catch straight to Leach at mid-off.Related

Pennington returned to the attack and George Rhodes attempted to leave the ball but only succeeded in edging through to Jack Haynes at first slip, much to his annoyance.Lewis Hill looked in good touch after overcoming an early leg before appeal by Charlie Morris as Leicestershire reached 88 for 3 from 31 overs at lunch. He advanced to 40 from only 65 balls but then his downfall when play resumed was the catalyst for a flurry of wickets.Hill went for an expansive drive against Barnard and provided Haynes with his second catch at first slip. Baker settled into a good line and length and struck in successive overs to reduce Leicestershire to 133 for 6.Ben Mike took one pace down the wicket to Baker but only picked out Libby at mid-off and then debutant Bates, 0, popped up a catch at Haynes at short leg.Morris gained some tangible reward for his efforts when he bowled Ed Barnes, 13, with a delivery angled back into him. The second new ball brought a swift end to the Leicestershire innings with the last three wickets falling in the space of 15 deliveries.Leach trapped Kimber lbw and bowled Chris Wright, two, while Callum Parkinson, 17, also went leg-before. Mitchell edged Wright to second slip but Libby, who reached 1,000 when on five, and nightwatchman Morris experienced few alarms through to the close.

Australia wait to count cost of crazy floodlit passage

Extraordinary over sees Green and Smith both depart just as Australia seemed poised to bat England out of second Test

Weatherald: Australia in a ‘good position’ heading into day three

While Joe Root’s century dominated discussions after play on the opening day at the Gabba there was a major question which hung in the air into the second morning: how good was England’s total, which eventually finished on 334? Prior to the resumption, one former Australia player was overheard saying it was a day to cash in.At 291 for 3, with Steven Smith and Cameron Green well set, building on the earlier work of Jake Weatherald’s eye-catching 72 and Marnus Labuschagne’s brisk 65, they had engineered an almost-ideal position to do just that. England were toiling away with 57-over old pink ball, which even under lights wasn’t offering much.Reaching the close on 378 for 6, a lead of 44, means they remain in control – although it might have been different had England held their catches – but one extraordinary over left the door ajar. Whether they are made to pay will become clear on Saturday.Related

England bowlers beat as series threatens to slip away

Mitchell Starc on left-arm wickets record: Wasim still GOAT

Even by the early standards of this series, and with what day-night games can throw up, it was a remarkable period of Test cricket. A few moments earlier, Green had taken on Brydon Carse when he bowled short with an unorthodox field – three on the off, but no one from deep third around to mid-off, and six scattered on the leg. Green twice backed away and carved Carse through off side then Smith top edged a pull for six which just evaded Ollie Pope who was on the rope directly behind the keeper.Carse changed ends, started with a very short bouncer which was called wide, then pulled the double-bluff by going full and straight. Green was already backing away before the ball left Carse’s hand and ended up miles outside leg, almost off the cut strip in a position that will go viral for the wrong reasons, as he threw the bat out in vain to try and reach the delivery. It was out of character for Green, even by the standards of his white-ball batting.”The short-ball plan is one of those things where everyone has their own methods.” Weatherald said. “The way I’d probably go about it is different than the way Cam and Smithy went about it. Because of that, we probably scored in different ways and provided different problems for the England bowlers.”Obviously Greeny backed himself…[he] probably would have his shot back if he could, we all can when we get out. But up to then, I think he put a lot of pressure on them, same with Smudge [Smith] as well.”Yet the over had only just started. Alex Carey was dropped in the gully first ball when he fended a short delivery which Ben Duckett couldn’t gather. Two balls later, Will Jacks pulled in a spectacular one-handed grab at backward square leg to intercept Smith’s pull. England sensed a way back but Carey and Michael Neser, not always entirely convincingly, combined in what could be a critical partnership.Cameron Green was bowled backing away too far•CA/Getty ImagesAustralia’s overall scoring rate of 5.17 was, as it stood when play ended, the fastest they had scored in an innings of at least 60 overs. “It wasn’t talked about,” Labuschagne told the host broadcaster. “With [Travis Head] and Weathers at the top they just grabbed the momentum and we piggybacked off that and sort of kept going.”While the wildness of the passage of play that saw Green and Smith depart was at the extreme end, a look at Australia’s scorecard suggests a day of unfulfilled potential with six of the top seven falling between 23 and 72 although Josh Inglis did not go to an aggressive stroke, bowled by one from Ben Stokes that perhaps kept a fraction low.”I’d probably reframe that and say that we’re in the position we are now, we have a lead before the next new ball, because of the shots we’ve been playing, the options we took,” Weatherald said. “You’d probably say that some of the shots were a bit reckless at times, but at the same time, they backed themselves. As a group, that’s what we want to do. In general, I think it came off quite well.”In a sense emphasising some of the cricket that was to follow, Weatherald’s own innings felt like one of the more controlled elements of the day even though he was above a run-a-ball for much of its early stages and finished with 72 off 78.For the second time in two innings, the opening partnership between him and Head took the wind out of England’s sails. In Perth it was to set up victory, here it prevented early damage against the new ball, but was also scored at such a rate that Australia had wrestled control, and effectively cancelled out the last-wicket runs England flayed the previous evening. It was Weatherald, in just his second Test, leading the charge rather than Head, who battled to 4 off 27 balls and was dropped by Jamie Smith. After three maidens, Weatherald opened the scoring with a strong cut against Gus Atkinson, although he needed some fortune for his second boundary in the same over when a top-edged pull flew over the keeper. There was a compactness and punchiness to his play, no better illustrated than when he collected three boundaries in an over off Atkinson: a crunching cover drive, a clip through square leg and a crisp drive through point. Of Australia’s first 36 runs, Weatherald made 28, although he later said he was as pleased with his leaving as he was with his aggressive strokes.”I think we’re quite an adaptable batting group at the moment,” he said. “Obviously, Heady will always go about it the way he does. But for me, I’m just seeing and reacting and trying to get in good positions. I didn’t actively go out there and play any differently than I normally would. It just ended up that way. It’s a really good wicket to bat on.”After drinks, Weatherald arched his back and uppercut Carse over deep third for six. He went to 49 with consecutive boundaries: a clip down to fine and another brilliant uppercut over backward point. A swivel-pull to deep square then brought up a maiden Test fifty off 45 balls. The prospect of three figures was coming into view when, in Weatherald’s own words, Jofra Archer “blew my foot off” when he was pinned lbw by a rare full delivery. There remains a good chance that Weatherald has played an innings that helps Australia go 2-0 up in the Ashes, although it’s not as clearcut as it could have been. But that really just continues the theme of the first four days of the series, which have left you turning up for the next day asking what could happen next.

The Brazil international was heavily linked with a move to the Middle East during the summer of 2024, as big-spending clubs in that part of the world set their sights on another marquee addition. No deal was done as Vinicius has a €1 billion (£832m/$1.1bn) release clause in his contract.

While no club is prepared to meet that asking price, it is being suggested that Vinicius could earn that figure over the course of a five-year contract if he were to move to the Saudi Pro League. It is also being claimed that Real could generate a fee between €400-500m (£333-416m/$422-528m).

DID YOU KNOW?

Vinicius has claimed that he would like to stay at Santiago Bernabeu “forever”, but claims that Blancos officials are considering cashing in before discussions need to begin over a contract that is due to expire in 2027. It is suggested that Chivo Perez, the son of club president Florentino, is in favour of a sale.

Wolves have concrete interest in "fast" and "strong" 22-year-old striker

After steering Wolverhampton Wanderers to a respectable 14th placed finish last season, Gary O'Neil looks set to be rewarded with the Raul Jimenez successor that his side have long been crying out for.

O'Neil needs attacking reinforcements

Firmly at the top of Wolves' wishlist this summer will be an out and out number nine who can compliment the existing attacking talents in the squad.

Imagine him & Ait-Nouri: Wolves could sign "dominant" £15m star

This would be a smart signing for Molineux to make.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 22, 2024

Of Wolves' 50 league goals last season, 24 came from Matheus Cunha and Hwang-Hee Chan. Cunha spent much of the season playing as a centre forward despite being more comfortable behind the striker, and his South Korean teammate is a winger by trade.

Much of Wolves' woes in finding a striker comes from the failure of previous players signed to fill this void. Fabio Silva arrived for a club record £35million fee back in 2020 however scored just 5 times in 72 games for Wolves. The story is the same for once promising forward Patrick Cutrone who found the back of the net on just 3 occasions in 28 appearances for the Molineux outfit.

Fabio Silva

With Cutrone leaving permanently to Como 1907 last summer and Silva linked with a move away from Molineux during this window, it appears that Wolves have now found the man that could finally put an end to their struggles up front.

Wolves interested in move for Broja

As first reported on the X account of Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Wolves are one of a number of teams eyeing a move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Plettenberg states that Wolves are "concretely interested" in the Albanian talisman who had been linked with a move to Molineux earlier this month. Alongside Wolves, the journalist cites fellow Premier League side Everton and continental outfits AC Milan and VfB Stuttgart as other potential suitors.

Broja is currently under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2028, however it is clear that the 22-year-old is seen as surplus to requirements in West London and will be moved on this summer. The Albanian has struggled for minutes with his parent club, making just 38 appearances for Chelsea, many of which have been from off the bench.

Whilst Broja's goalscoring stats don't make for fantastic reading, it is clear that the Albanian is a talented player that could thrive in the right environment. Despite his lack of senior game time, the 22-year-old is still highly regarded in West London with former Blues' boss Frank Lampard waxing lyrical about Broja back in 2022.

"He's a very good lad, very talented young boy. He's fast, strong, has a real eye for a goal. He's a very good young player, so I'm very aware of his strengths."

Chelsea forward Armando Broja.

In many ways, Broja and Wolves are a match made in heaven. Broja is a talented striker that has struggled for game time and Wolves boast a strong squad that is crying out for a proper number nine. With this in mind, if Wolves are to get this transfer over line it would be a good deal for all parties.

The Plymouth manager, who scored 253 goals in 559 games for United, admitted it was tough to see his old side languishing down in 14th this season. The former England international is hopeful manager Ten Hag can turn their fortunes around, but was less magnanimous about the Red Devils squad.

    WHAT WAYNE ROONEY SAID

He told Sky Sports: “Well that’s obviously down to the owners of the football club to look at that. I’m sure Erik Ten Hag is a fantastic manager. He’s won trophies wherever he’s been and won trophies at Manchester United as well. So yes, he’s going through a difficult period and I think he’d probably say that himself. But you hope he can turn it around because too often managers lose their jobs and then it’s another rebuild with a different manager. I think it’s difficult and anyone would admit that Manchester United want to be challenging for titles, so to be 14th, I’m sure everyone at the club knows they need to improve on that. I know Erik Ten Hag is doing everything he can to try and improve that. Players again, and I said this last season, need to do better than what they’re doing. There’s a big turnaround of players over the last few years. You just want to see them challenging again.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League season with their haul of eight points in seven games in 2024/25. Ten Hag is under pressure to keep his job, his players are, arguably, not performing, and the short-term future seems bleak. If their fortunes don't improve quickly, the ex-Ajax boss could be dismissed from Old Trafford soon.
