Big picture – A historic first

History beckons when Papua New Guinea take on Uganda in an all-Associate clash in Group C with one of them set for their first win in a T20 World Cup. Both teams know Wednesday’s game will be their best shot at collecting two crucial points, having been placed alongside strong teams such as Afghanistan, West Indies and New Zealand in the group. Both PNG and Uganda are coming off defeats in their opening-round fixtures but that may not necessarily dent their confidence. PNG, who made their T20 World Cup debut in 2021, had lost all of their four matches then but threatened to pull off an upset against co-hosts West Indies a few days ago. A strong team in the East Asia-Pacific region, especially in the shortest format, PNG are capable of handing Uganda – in their first World Cup appearance in any sport – a thrashing.Uganda are a high-energy team. One of the biggest highlights in their journey to the Caribbean was qualifying ahead of Zimbabwe via the Africa Region Qualifier last year, where they beat Zimbabwe by five wickets. Cut to 2024, up against Afghanistan in the opener, they folded for 58 in chase of 184, and it underlined the gulf between the two sides. Come Wednesday, the gulf may not be massive, thus providing a realistic hope for Uganda – who have played a total of 92 games in this format since achieving the T20I status in 2019 – to etch their name into World Cup history. But can they put up a better show with the bat will be the question?

In the spotlight – Sesse Bau and Roger Mukasa

Sese Bau, one of PNG’s prolific batters, is fresh off a half-century against high-quality bowling of West Indies. Having lost the top three for 34 in that game, it was his knock that held the innings for PNG and dragged them to 136. He was comfortable driving Andre Russell down the ground, reverse-sweeping Akeal Hosein and skipping down the track to Gudakesh Motie. Bau, the fourth-highest run-scorer for PNG in T20Is with 941 runs in 45 innings, will be keen to carry forward this momentum into the second game as well.Roger Mukasa is a solid right-handed top-order batter for Uganda. He has featured in 56 of Uganda’s 92 T20Is and accumulated 1186 runs at a strike rate of 121.39. The 35-year old was also the second-highest T20I run-scorer in 2023 with 738 runs. He was dismissed for 0 against Afghanistan but scored an unbeaten 51 off 41 against Namibia in a warm-up game in Tarouba. His contribution at No.3 will be key for Uganda.Norman Vanua bowls during a PNG training session in Guyana•ICC/Getty Images

Team news

Norman Vanua, PNG’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is, was expected to lead the pace attack but missed the first game. It remains to be seen if he will make it to the XI against Uganda.PNG (probable XI): 1 Tony Ura, 2 Assad Vala (capt), 3 Lega Siaka, 4 Sese Bau, 5 Hiri Hiri, 6 Charles Amini, 7 Kiplin Doriga (wk), 8 Chad Soper, 9 Alei Nao, 10 Kabua Morea, 11 John KarikoUganda went in with an experienced XI and used as many as seven bowlers against Afghanistan. With three spinners and four pace-bowling options, they might stick with the same XI.Uganda (probable XI): 1 Ronak Patel, 2 Simon Ssesazi (wk), 3 Roger Mukasa, 4 Riazat Ali Shah, 5 Dinesh Nakrani, 6 Alpesh Ramjani, 7 Robinson Obuya, 8 Brian Masaba (capt), 9 Bilal Hassan, 10 Cosmas Kyewuta, 11 Henry Ssenyondo

Stats that matter

  • PNG beat Uganda by eight wickets in 2022, the only time these two sides met in a T20I before the World Cup.
  • Sese Bau is 59 shy of 1000 runs in T20Is.
  • Simon Ssesazi is the only Uganda batter to cross 2000 runs in T20Is.

Pitch and conditions

The average score at Providence in men’s T20s since the start of 2023 is 159. Of the nine games played in CPL 2023, only two games witnessed 200-plus scores. The surface has been slow traditionally, so spinners might play a crucial role. There are chances of thunderstorms and showers throughout the day.

Quotes

“The joy of playing the game, which is something I love to see, and giving everything when they go out in the middle, giving everything when we come to practice, it’s a part of my game and it’s a part of what I like to see in teams that I work with. So, seeing that and seeing the energy they have, I remember the first practice session, the energy in just the warm-ups, I was like, how are we going to practice today? But they love it and the enjoyment of being at the World Cup and representing PNG is huge, so I have enjoyed that.”
“It’s a baby of the World Cup to be honest, Uganda. That’s just a new country to the international, this is the first experience they are facing under lights also. So now they have experienced that. But this team might take a little time. We have to be really patient with these kind of players because if you remember in 1975, India played their first World Cup and if I’m not wrong, they played all 60 overs for 36 [very few] runs – whole 60 overs. So, India was just new to the World Cup, same with Uganda you never know after 15 – 20 years you find that Uganda is holding the trophy somewhere.”

His value has soared 100%: Ipswich have struck gold on the new Darren Bent

When Ipswich Town last suffered relegation from the Premier League, it’s unlikely they were expecting such a long exile from England’s top flight.

Indeed, the last time the Tractor Boys slipped back down to the English Football League, it took them nearly two decades to return to the big-time, having found themselves marooned in the second tier and League One season after season after dropping out of the top division back in 2002.

Despite sinking back down and struggling to get back up, Ipswich did uncover a gem around this time in Darren Bent, who would later leave the building in 2005 for Charlton Athletic to forge a very successful Premier League career.

Darren Bent's heroics at Ipswich

Before going on to play for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, on top of an England call-up or two, Bent’s humble beginnings originated in Suffolk.

In total, the now retired centre-forward picked up 56 of his 218 career strikes at Portman Road, with the-then wide-eyed Bent very much garnering a reputation for being a deadly finisher with his boyhood club.

A move up to the Premier League with the Addicks happened at the close of his most impactful season in Suffolk, with Bent accumulating a blistering 35 combined goals and assists during the 2003/04 campaign, which then resulted in a big £3m move to the Valley occurring.

The well-travelled striker is still held in high regard at Ipswich to this day, but there is another forward in McKenna’s current ranks who possesses the same clinical edge Bent was known for and he could well make the relegation-threatened club a sizeable profit soon.

Ipswich's brand-new Bent

There are parallels to be made between the disappointing relegation suffered by Ipswich in 2002 and the Tractor Boys’ current unfolding campaign, with George Burley taking Ipswich down in 18th spot, the same position they currently occupy under McKenna’s rule.

That’s hopefully where the parallels end in terms of league positions and fates come the end of the 38-game marathon.

That said, Liam Delap in the here and now has become Ipswich’s second iteration of Bent; he’s direct, can score goals and he’s quick. What’s not to like?

Delap has definitely lived up to his bumper £20m price-tag this season with a hefty haul of ten goals and two assists next to his name in Premier League action, leading to Bent actually praising the ex-Manchester City man as a more than capable top-flight calibre attacker.

Described as a “one-man battering ram,” by Opta Analyst, his double digits in front of goal have even seen Chelsea reportedly emerge as frontrunners for his signature, with Ipswich very much facing a losing battle to keep the young forward around even if they do secure survival.

It’s safe to say that the Tractor Boys really did strike gold securing the lethal marksman’s services for a modest £20m, considering reports now suggest he’s worth an increased fee around the £40m ballpark, representing an increase in value of 100% over the course of a whirlwind few months.

Delap will hope he can further emulate Bent in solidifying himself as a reliable source of Premier League goals moving forward, whether that be with Ipswich or – as Bent had to do – having to spread his wings for opportunities elsewhere.

Aston Villa: Romano shares "really important" update on Rashford deal

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared a “really important” update on Aston Villa and their chances of signing Marcus Rashford permanently this summer, with the England international currently enjoying a new lease of life under Unai Emery.

Marcus Rashford praised since joining Aston Villa

After being left out in the cold by Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old opted to pursue a different club in January.

Aston Villa now considering hijacking AC Milan deal to sign £33m star

Aston Villa are now looking at joining the transfer race to sign a Premier League player.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 25, 2025

Rashford was linked with a Man United exit for months, before Villa eventually took the bait and signed him on loan with an option to buy for around £40 million – a move which NSWE and Monchi will be overjoyed with.

Since putting pen to paper on a temporary move to the Midlands, Rashford has worked his way back into the England fold with four assists from nine appearances in all competitions and some truly impactful performances.

“The Holte End have a new hero,” said Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp after Rashford’s excellent substitute appearance in a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

“That sub made all the difference. He was fantastic. Rashford came on, he gave energy, enthusiasm, everything we want to see from him. The running, the desire… he was excellent. He gave them that impetus to put Chelsea on the back foot.

Aston Villa's MarcusRashfordreacts after the match

“Right now, he looks like he is loving every second of it. He’s involved, he’s showing enthusiasm – all the things that were thrown at him at Man Utd, he is now doing the opposite. And he’s got sweat on his face and he’s not jogging around like ‘I don’t want to be here’. He looks like he wants to be in that claret and blue shirt.”

His impressive form means Villa could even face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich for Rashford’s signature this summer, even if Emery’s side possess an option to trigger his buy clause.

Fabrizio Romano shares "really important" Marcus Rashford update

Now, speaking on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness, respected reporter Romano has shared an update on Villa’s plans to sign Rashford permanently.

He claims that Villa’s finances will be “really important” in determining whether they’ll trigger the £40m buy option, but in any case, the journalist expects him to remain beyond 2024/25.

“Aston Villa are very happy with Marcus Rashford in general,” said Romano.

“So I don’t think, in any case, if they decided to trigger the £40m option clause, I don’t think they would do that just to sell the player again.

“So in that case, I see Marcus Rashford staying at Aston Villa and having the opportunity to make something long-term with the club. What I can say about Marcus Rashford is that it’s going to be really important to understand financially what happens for Aston Villa.

“So now they’re obviously really focused on the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and to see what happens in the Premier League table from now to the end of the season. That’s going to be obviously really important, and then we will have to see financially.”

Everton academy gem was ahead of Gordon, then Thelwell sold him for £1.5m

Everton’s time at Goodison Park has very nearly run its course with a second test event at Bramley-Moore Dock now complete.

It remains to be seen what players will be picked by David Moyes for Everton’s first competitive fixture at their fresh home, with the Scotsman having to wrestle with the futures of many of his camp now owing to their contracts running down, on top of loanees such as Jack Harrison and Jesper Linderstrom perhaps not sticking it out long-term.

Whatever does take place, the options at Moyes’ disposal on the left side of the attack look to be light with Iliman Ndiaye currently out injured and homegrown gem Anthony Gordon now way away from the grasps of Goodison at Newcastle United.

Gordon's rise at Newcastle since leaving Everton

Gordon has had to walk away from Thomas Tuchel’s England camp this international break due to his own injury difficulties, but it’s fair to say his career has come on leaps and bounds since waving goodbye to Merseyside.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

Indeed, the Liverpool-born attacker is front and centre of Eddie Howe’s EFL Cup-winning side right now, with Gordon boasting an impressive nine strikes and six assists this season in all competitions, even if he did miss that Wembley showdown with the Reds through suspension.

Those numbers alone actually match his entire output from when he was in the Everton first-team picture, with Gordon only mustering up a disappointing seven goals and eight assists at the Toffees, having previously shone in many a youth side.

Still, this didn’t prove to be a setback for the now fully fledged Three Lions international who has gone on to excel past Merseyside.

On the flip side, however, a fellow former Toffees youth product hasn’t quite gone on to reach the heights once expected of him, despite bettering Gordon back in their U23s education.

The Everton academy star who was ahead of Gordon

It’s to be expected in the cruel landscape of youth football that some won’t hit the heights they believe they’re destined for, with the hype next to their name often working against them.

Nathan Broadhead is arguably a forgotten face when examining the recent crop to have come up through the youth ranks at Goodison, with the likes of Gordon stealing most of the plaudits for his heroics now at St James’ Park.

But, back in 2021, many would have been expecting Broadhead to be the star to hit the big time in the same way Gordon has, considering the Welsh starlet had a number of goal-and-assist laden campaigns under his belt playing for the U23s.

Broadhead had been in and around the U23 set-up since 2017, with Gordon still having to cut his teeth in the U18 picture initially, whilst his counterpart went on to tally up 17 goals and seven assists from 59 appearances in the highest level of youth football.

Anthony Gordon

Gordon paled in comparison with his output for the U23s too – helping himself to just eight goals and five assists from a lesser 28 appearances – but only one of them would ultimately go on to forge a senior career at the club.

Despite making a name for himself in the youth circles at the club, Broadhead only made a meagre two first-team appearances for the Toffees, with the path to stardom for Gordon laid out for him when he seized his senior chances better.

He has since gone on to play in the Premier League more regularly at his current employers Ipswich Town after Kevin Thelwell sanctioned a £1.5m switch, but he has had to work hard to get back up to the level, having joined the Tractor Boys when they were marooned down in League One.

Ultimately, it’s extremely hard to predict how a youngster’s playing days will pan out, with Gordon potentially set for even dizzier heights at the Magpies, whilst Broadhead stares a relegation back to the Championship in the face.

Man Utd now want to sign "powerful" £50m star who is Tottenham's top target

In what would see them get one over on their top six rivals, Manchester United are now keen to sign an attacking star who’s currently Tottenham Hoptspur’s top target this summer.

Man Utd and Spurs battling on and off the pitch

So much of Manchester United’s season has mirrored Tottenham’s. Both find themselves languishing in the bottom half, both have been left to rely on the Europa League for any chance of turning their season around and both are now in desperate need of summer reinforcements. When the summer transfer window does arrive, it would also come as little surprise if the two ‘big six’ sides found themselves operating in close quarters, either.

After admitting that nothing could turn their season around, Ruben Amorim will at least be hoping that the lure of Old Trafford is still enough to see the Red Devils secure their targets ahead of the likes of Spurs even in Manchester United’s current state.

On that front, the rumours are already coming thick and fast. According to Caught Offside, Manchester United now want to sign Antoine Semenyo in a move that would see them beat Spurs to their top target this summer. The Lilywhites are even reportedly lining up a bid worth €40m (£34m) to sign the winger Bournemouth value at £50m ahead of the transfer window.

Sold by INEOS, now outscoring Zirkzee: Man Utd must rue losing £25m "hero"

Man Utd may wish they kept hold of this star

ByJoe Nuttall Mar 7, 2025

That doesn’t look set to discourage United, however, who caught a first-hand glimpse of Semenyo’s quality earlier this season when he scored in a stunning 3-0 victory for Bournemouth. Handing Noussair Mazraoui a torrid time, the versatile full-back ended the defeat with just five defensive actions and a 50% duel-success rate.

Semenyo, meanwhile, found himself wheeling away in celebration after scoring the final of his side’s three goals to stun Old Trafford just after the hour mark.

"Powerful" Semenyo has earned big move

Whilst there would be plenty of irony involved if Semenyo set his sights on a big move this summer and found himself at a club currently on a crash course hurtling towards a bottom half finish, Manchester United’s name still carries plenty of weight. As they look to rebuild under Amorim, picking apart sides like Bournemouth would be a good place to start.

Antoine Semenyo scores for Bournemouth

Semenyo has certainly earned a chance to move onto a top six side too, scoring nine goals and assisting another five in all competitions for the Cherries so far this season. Receiving plenty of praise as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed the winger the “perfect instant-impact winger” who also possesses “powerful ambipedal ball striking”.

Semenyo certainly looks likely to have a decision to make this summer, but whether that results in a trip to Old Trafford remains to be seen.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The LA Galaxy have signed head coach Greg Vanney to a multi-year contract extension, the club announced on Friday. Vanney, who led the Galaxy to last season's MLS Cup, was set to see his contract expire at the end of the season. According to GiveMeSport, both sides looked to get a deal done in the offseason, but negotiations were greatly impacted by the Galaxy's poor start to the season.

Through the first 13 matches of the season, the Galaxy remain winless, having lost 10 of those 13. Notably, the Galaxy fell, 7-0 to the New York Red Bulls on May 10. The Galaxy, however, have extended Vanney as a show of faith while also bolstering the club's soccer staff, promoting Juninho, to Senior Advisor to the General Manager and Zack Murshedi to Director of Team Administration and Player Care while hiring Rava Ramineni to a new role, Director of Quantitative Analysis.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vanney has been with the Galaxy since 2021, having previously coached at Toronto FC. Throughout his coaching career, he's won two MLS Cups and reached four MLS Cup finals, while amassing a 16-6-2 career playoff record, level for best in league history.

However, the Galaxy have struggled mightily this season without star Riqui Puig, who suffered an ACL tear during last year's playoff run. Additionally, Joseph Paintsil missed significant time due to injury as well, while the departure of striker Dejan Jovelic due to salary cap reasons hasn't helped matters, either.

    WHAT VANNEY SAID

“I’m honored to continue this journey with a club that has meant so much to me,” said Vanney. “We know we haven’t started this season the way we intended, but we believe in the group, in the process, and in what we’re building. I’m fully committed to our players, our fans, and this organization – and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

“Greg is one of the most respected and successful coaches in MLS history, and we are excited to be continuing under his leadership,” added LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz. “While this season’s results haven’t reflected our standards, this was a decision made following our 2024 MLS Cup victory, and we remain confident in the project we are building with Greg, and we have a clear path forward to returning to an MLS champion level. Greg’s commitment to development, culture, and high standards is unwavering.”

Aston Villa hold strong interest in "smart" star who’ll cost £0 this summer

Aston Villa hold a strong interest in a “smart” midfielder who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, according to a recent report.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans came from a goal down to beat Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday night, and they had January signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio to thank. Rashford grabbed two assists as he set up Asensio twice to make sure all three points stayed in the Midlands.

Rashford is on loan from Manchester United, and it was reported over the weekend that Villa do have an option to buy the Englishman for £40 million, but the chances of him joining the club on a permanent basis are slim.

In further transfer news, Villa are interested in signing Samu Omorodion from FC Porto as a possible replacement for Jhon Duran, who left in January.

FC Porto's SamuOmorodioncelebrates scoring their first goal

Omorodion has been an impressive force in Portugal, and the Villans are now interested in making a deal happen, with Porto looking to get around £41 million for his services. Signing a new centre-forward will be a key priority for Unai Emery in the summer, and they would be more willing to splash out such a figure on the 20 year-old due to his age and sell on potential.

Aston Villa hold strong interest in "smart" Angel Gomes

But it is not just strikers on Villa’s radar, as according to Give Me Sport, Aston Villa are monitoring Lille midfielder Angel Gomes and have a strong interest in doing a deal in the summer.

Gomes has been with the French side since August 2020, but his time at the club appears to be coming to an end, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign. The 24-year-old is expected to become a free agent, and Villa are among the Premier League teams keeping an eye on his situation.

Tottenham, Bournemouth, Man United and West Ham are also interested in signing Gomes, but the report states that Villa could represent an appealing option to the player. That is because Villa may be able to offer European football in some capacity, which the others likely won’t. Furthermore, given how the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers have done under Emery at Villa, the England international may see the Midlands as somewhere he can really develop.

Gomes, who has been described as a “smart passer” by analyst Ben Mattinson in the past, has been a key performer for Lille over a number of seasons now, and that has earned him recognition on the international stage. The midfielder may have his eye on a return to England and the Premier League to prove that he is more than capable of performing at this level, and it may improve his chances of success for England as well.

Fleming had previously worked with New Zealand in the lead-up to the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. He is currently coaching Southern Brave in the men’s Hundred and will then link up with the New Zealand team for the ODI series against England, which begins on September 8, three days after the end of the T20I series.”I think Flem will be great for players on that side of it and also good for the staff as well,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. “He’s got [an] immense amount of knowledge in that part of the world [India] and has coached in the IPL right from the start of the competition [from 2009], so he’s coached in all those areas where we’re going to play in. Foster will be New Zealand’s assistant coach for the England ODI series and will also be part of their coaching staff for the ODI World Cup in India.”James spent a week with us in the UAE, think about four or five years ago when he was over there,” Stead said. “He might have even been playing at the time. But it’s great that he has come back. He will come to the World Cup; he’s got a lot of experience in the IPL with the KKR side and in an assistant coach role there he’s worked with video analysts, so will give us a lot of, I think, information and knowledge for us to consider when we approach all the different venues in the World Cup.”Ian Bell to fill in for Luke RonchiFormer England batter Bell has been appointed as New Zealand’s assistant coach for the upcoming T20I series against England. He will then fill in for Luke Ronchi as the batting coach for the following ODI series against England. Ronchi will then return to take charge of the side for the three-match ODI series in Bangladesh in September – New Zealand’s last ODI assignment before the World Cup – allowing Stead a short break. Bell will assist Ronchi and bowling coach Shane Jurgensen during the ODIs in Bangladesh. Bell is currently an assistant coach at Birmingham Phoenix in the men’s Hundred.”The well-being of our players and staff is of vital importance with the sheer amount of cricket being played these days,” New Zealand manager Simon Insley said.”Following the T20 team’s departure to the UAE (Aug 12), the team will be on the road right through until December 16 when the Test team returns, ahead of a busy home summer.”Saqlain to rejoin NZ support staffStead will also take a break for the Test leg of the Bangladesh tour, which begins on November 23, with a two-day practice game, just four days after the World Cup final on November 19. Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain will rejoin the side for that Test tour, having previously worked with the white-ball sides during the Pakistan tour in April. He has been appointed as spin coach. The Test tour of Bangladesh will likely be the first task for the new bowling coach, with Jurgensen taking up the role as head coach at Wellington after the World Cup. He is set to work with Wellington from November 22, 2023 to April 2027.”Saqi is a great human being,” Stead said. “He has had experience with our guys in Pakistan and knows about spin-bowling stocks and has certainly added to that area of the game. He’s just got great knowledge. As a player himself, he was superb; he was a Test player. And going to Bangladesh, he will certainly add some skills and add some expertise in the spin-bowling area, which isn’t always an area that we cover all the time.”
