Wagner returns for Essex in 2018

Essex have secured a return for Neil Wagner, the New Zealand left-armer who played a key role in their 2017 Championship title

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2018Essex have secured a return for Neil Wagner, the New Zealand left-armer who played a key role in their 2017 Championship title. Wagner has signed for an initial spell from May until July, with the possibility of it being extended depending on his international commitments.Although Wagner’s 31 wickets came at 35.32 last season, he sent down more than 300 overs – behind only Simon Harmer and Jamie Porter – and added experience to a youthful seam attack. His aggressive style complimented the nagging lines provided by Porter, and his best figures of 6 for 48, at Taunton in April, helped set up Essex’s first win in what was to become a memorable season.Currently ranked the No. 7 Test bowler in the world, Wagner will take over from Peter Siddle as Essex’s overseas player in May, after a five-match Championship stint for the Australian. Wagner is set to play in all formats until the end of July.”Once I knew there was an opportunity to come back to Essex, I was very keen to get back to Chelmsford and build on the hard work and success of last season,” Wagner said.”Everyone at the club made me feel welcome last year, from the members to the commercial team, and I absolutely loved my time there. The squad and coaching staff were brilliant with me and I am looking forward to catching up with the friends I made and bringing more success to such a special club.”Wagner was Essex’s main overseas signing in 2017, joining for a second stint later in the season after Mohammad Amir returned to Pakistan. As well as helping Essex to their first Championship in 25 years, he claimed 14 wickets in the Royal London Cup before their semi-final exit. The 31-year-old has also played county cricket previously for Lancashire and Northamptonshire. He claimed his best Test figures of 7 for 39 against West Indies in December and should play a key role in New Zealand’s two-Test series against England starting next month. New Zealand are then due to have a six-month gap before touring the UAE to play Pakistan in October.Anthony McGrath, Essex’s head coach, said: “We have been working hard on bringing Neil back for a while. His performances were excellent last season and he offers something to the squad with both bat and ball.”Off the field he was very much a popular member of the squad and he brings international experience to our exciting group of young bowlers. He showed great commitment to the club last year and was integral to what we achieved. From the minute he joined he understood exactly what Essex is all about, and we are looking forward to welcoming him back this year.”

Sohail Tanvir fined 15% of match fee after middle-finger gesture

The Guyana Amazon Warriors pacer had sent off Australian Ben Cutting by giving him the middle finger with both hands after dismissing him during their clash against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Aug-2018Guyana Amazon Warriors fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has been fined 15% of his match fee for making an obscene gesture during his team’s home game against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Thursday. Tanvir accepted the sanction handed to him by match referee Denavon Hayles. The incident occurred during the 17th over of the Patriots innings, when Tanvir dismissed Australian Ben Cutting with a yorker that crashed into the middle stump. As Cutting began walking back, Tanvir showed him a double-middle finger, with Cutting’s back turned to him. One ball before the dismissal, Tanvir had been dispatched for a six over long-on by Cutting.Tanvir finished his spell with 1 for 24 in four overs, which was instrumental in restricting the Patriots to 146 for 5, before the Warriors ran down the target in 16.3 overs, with six wickets in hand. Tanvir was the highest wicket-taker in the previous season, and was subsequently retained by the Warriors, for the maximum price of US$160,000.

Rashid defends eight off the last over to seal 3-0 whitewash

Raton Gomes/BCB

With four runs needed off the last ball, Ariful Haque swung Rashid Khan towards long-on. Were Bangladesh going to deny Afghanistan a 3-0 whitewash? Not quite. With two athletic interventions at the boundary, Shafiqullah prevented the ball from going over the boundary for six and then from rolling past it for four. Then the ball somehow made its way to the wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad before Bangladesh could complete the match-tying third run. This wasn’t quite over, though. The third umpire was called in to see if Shafiqullah had stepped beyond the boundary when he flicked the ball back into the field of play. It was a matter of an inch, but he had not. Afghanistan had completed the perfect finish to the series, winning by one wicket and sealing a 3-0 scoreline. The third T20 burst into life in the last two overs, which began with Bangladesh needing 30 to win. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, who had put on Bangladesh’s only 50-plus stand of the series, knew the penultimate over was do-or-die as Rashid was due to bowl the last over.Mushfiqur blasted Karim Janat over point and then pulled him and drove him through and over long-on to pick up four consecutive boundaries. It became five in a row when Mushfiqur brought out an inch-perfect reverse-sweep to bisect backward point and short third man. The 21-run over brought the equation down to nine runs off the last over, but it was against Rashid.Mushfiqur fell off the first ball, caught at deep midwicket slog-sweeping, and neither Ariful nor Mahmudullah could find the boundary off the next four balls, leaving the newcomer on strike with four needed off the last ball. Ariful finally managed a meaty hit, but Shafiqullah ensured he would have the final word.Bangladesh’s chase of 146 did not begin well. Tamim Iqbal’s quiet series ended with a catch driven to extra-cover in the third over, off Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Soumya Sarkar became the third Bangladesh No. 3 in three matches, and he promised much when he switch-hit Mujeeb for six in the fifth over. But in the space of four balls in the sixth over, Bangladesh were in tatters, Soumya and Liton Das run-out, one after another in near-identical fashion, both sprinting out too eagerly from the non-striker’s end when the batsman played Mohammad Nabi towards short fine leg.Samiullah Shenwari then took a superb catch at cover to send back Shakib Al Hasan, leaving Bangladesh 53 for four in the ninth over.Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah took control from that point, tackling Rashid, Mujeeb and Nabi sensibly and laying into the other bowlers. Mahmudullah pressed the accelerator in the 17th over, hitting Aftab Alam for a six and four, but then Rashid conceded just three runs in the next over, leaving Bangladesh with a very tough ask in the last two overs.Having chosen to bat first, Afghanistan began with a bang – more accurately, three bangs – as Mohammad Shahzad struck Mehidy Hasan Miraz for two fours and a six over long-on in the first over. Shahzad hit one more four before falling to a poor decision in the eighth over, given out leg-before to Nazmul Islam even though he had gloved a reverse-sweep. Shahzad’s opening partner Usman Ghani fell in the next over for 19 off 26 balls, caught behind trying to pull Abu Jayed.Asghar Stanikzai helped Bangladesh recover, hammering three sixes – two over long-on and one over cover – before falling to part-timer Ariful in the 13th over. Asghar made 27 off 17. Nabi’s dismissal in the 15th over, Mahmudullah taking a good diving catch at mid-off, was another crucial blow for Bangladesh but the in-form Samiullah Shenwari and Najibullah Zadran brought Afghanistan back with some big hits, taking a combined 26 off the 17th and 18th overs.Just when a total in excess of 150 looked likely, Bangladesh pulled them back with spin as Shakib and Nazmul conceded only 10 off the last two overs. The two left-arm spinners finished with a combined 3 for 34 in their eight overs, while Jayed was also impressive, using the short ball well to finish with 2 for 27.

The mysterious Mr Narine

Bought as a rookie for an eye-popping fee to play in the IPL, Sunil Narine and his knuckle ball have delivered for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Next up? Watch out, Test cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi26-May-2012Kieron Pollard remembers the moment clearly. Sitting at his laptop in the middle of the night in Barbados, he was following the IPL player auction in Bangalore. “When his name came up and the price started to rise, I think I was more excited than him. He is one of the guys I have seen come through the ranks in Trindad & Tobago and he has been on the fringes for a long while, and then to get this opportunity to come to the IPL and not only come but come at such a price was very nice,” Pollard says of fellow Trinidadian Sunil Narine, the offspinner.Bidding on Narine started at the base price of $50,000. Two hours into it, the Kolkata Knight Riders and Pollard’s Mumbai Indians were in a tug of war. Eventually the Knight Riders had him for $700,000. Narine was in Bridgetown at the time, playing in a match against Combined Campuses and Colleges, which he near-singlehandedly won for T&T with a 13-wicket match haul. He was returning to the team hotel in the early hours of the morning after a liming session with a few Trinidad players, including Dwayne Bravo, who was being fed news of the auction by New Zealand allrounder Scott Styris on the phone. “It was four or five in the morning,” Narine remembers with a smile. “Bravo asked me, ‘You know you have been bought in the IPL?’ I asked for how much. He said $700,000. I was like, ‘Oh shit, no way, man,'”Over the last month Narine has been delivering on that investment: he is the IPL’s mystery man, whose hands, seam and “knuckle ball” quality batsmen are finding impossible to read. Going into Sunday’s final, Narine has 24 wickets, one shy of tournament leader Morne Morkel, though Narine’s wickets have come far cheaper: his economy rate of 5.20 is the best across all IPL seasons among bowlers who have bowled a minimum of 30 overs. Even Muttiah Muralitharan, who played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore this season, has an overall tournament economy rate of 6.48. That Narine is difficult to get away is also indicated by the fact that less than 40% of the runs he has conceded have come through boundaries (112). Compare that with Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla, at least half of whose runs have come in boundaries.Narine is one of the few instances in IPL history where a big buy has provided value for money in the first season. Joy Bhattacharjya, the Knight Riders’ team director, says that putting big money on Narine was not a risk. The team’s post-mortem at the end of the 2011 season highlighted the need for a strike bowler who could also be economical bowling at the death. “Narine has fulfilled the need on both fronts,” Bhattacharjya says. The Knight Riders play their first IPL final this weekend and Bhattacharjya agrees that Narine has been instrumental in them having gone so far.”It is a little tough knowing that you have been bought for so much,” Narine says. “There is a little bit of pressure. Knowing that, you still have to go out and do your best. It is not like you just got the money and didn’t perform. Hopefully I can continue performing.”From out of Trinidad
Narine comes from a small family and lives with his parents and older sister in Arima, Trinidad. He surprised Sunil Gavaskar recently when he revealed in a post-match chat that his father, Shadeed, a big fan of the Indian batting legend, had named his son after him.It was Shadeed who sparked his son’s interest in sport, taking him to the Queens Park Savannah every evening. Narine is proud he has been loyal to his first club, Queens Park Oval. “I started at age seven and I’m still there at age 23.”Family support helped Narine keep faith with cricket when his teachers at school were unhappy he was getting increasingly distracted by the sport. “Some of the teachers said, ‘You better concentrate on your books, because one in a million make it big.'” But his father did not let his young son be discouraged. “He said, ‘Don’t worry. What’s for you is for you and will happen.’ So I just continued playing cricket and here I am now,” Narine says.Narine is a Roman Catholic, but says he is not religious, and though superstitious by his own admission, he is reluctant to say what rituals he observes. Apart from his now-famous mohawk, he has a tattoo on his arm and wears a couple of bands on his wrists, including a metal one with his first name inscribed on it. His one kit-bag essential is sunglasses: “I have eight shades, all different colours. Just love them,” he says.

“When you bowl with a scrambled seam, it is very difficult to pick the actual rotation. If the batsmen aren’t getting good visual clues out of the hand, then they are reduced to playing the ball off the pitch, which has obvious limitations in terms of time to play shots”Former Australia bowler Geoff Lawson on Narine’s action

He first came to notice during the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2005, his first games for West Indies. He looks at that tournament as a stepping stone, because he then graduated to play for the senior side at his club. “Before that I used to struggle to make the second team at Queen’s Park.” Bernard Julien, Sammy Guillen and Roland Sampath were among the coaches who played a significant role in Narine’s progress at various stages of his career. In 2011, Narine had to travel to Australia to make minor tweaks to his bowling action. Some regional umpires had raised doubts about his bowling during the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament and told the T&T manager and coach remedial action needed to be taken. The government of Trinidad funded the trip. It was a critical time, just before the T&T side was picked for the Champions League Twenty20. “If I failed I would have to start all over again,” Narine says. “It was a lot of pressure.” In Australia he learnt to bowl a little more side-on. “Little, little adjustments” were suggested without changing his action entirely, which worked well.Though West Indies as a whole may not quite be a haven for spin, T&T does not lack for slow bowlers. Narine was pitted against the likes of Dave Mohammed, Samuel Badree, Amit Jaggernauth, Sherwin Ganga and Imran Khan. It helped, then, that the first time he was selected for a trials game meant to pick the Trinidad team, in 2008, he took all ten wickets, including that of West Indies opener Lendl Simmons. It immediately catapulted him over the competition. Narine says he has learned from the rest. “Probably their motivation and love for cricket and the pride they take in representing the country. They are quite serious about their game, and attitude-wise they are brilliant,” he says. The knuckle ball
As a youngster, Narine played “windball” cricket with a soft ball, where the bowler squeezes the ball during delivery to make it spin. Shadeed had watched the Sri Lanka offspinner Ajantha Mendis bowl his “carrom” ball, and urged his son to try the knuckle grip. So did Darren Bravo. “I was practising in the nets and then one of my friends, Marlon, and small Bravo told me why did I not try it in club matches,” Narine says.He found it hard initially – it’s one thing squeezing a soft ball and another propelling a hard cricket ball across 22 yards – but says he has improved with time and practice. The knuckle-ball grip involves bending the forefinger and middle finger and using them to propel the ball forwards. What is distinct about Narine’s away-going delivery, as opposed to a carrom ball bowled by someone like, say, R Ashwin, is that the Indian uses one finger to push the ball away while Narine uses two.Narine has used his knuckle ball sparingly, and says his stock ball will always be the offbreak, which he delivers with more side spin. He also has the topspinner, and a faster ball, which he uses varyingly to keep batsmen in check. The first glimpse the world at large got of Narine’s repertoire was in T&T’s crucial match against the Chennai Super Kings in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, when he dismissed Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni – the last two caught and bowled. “When I came on, they were under pressure, so I was happy to bowl,” he remembers. “Against Dhoni, I know he was looking to hit me for a six. So I mixed my pace and got him.” He rates the performance as one of his best spells to date. “It was my first real exposure to that level of cricket.”Former England batsman Owais Shah, who moves about a lot in his crease, is the kind of player Narine finds difficult to bowl at. At Eden Gardens in April, Shah came in to bat for the Rajasthan Royals against KKR after a solid half-century against Mumbai Indians a couple of days before. “He is pretty hard to bowl at because he is not stable at the crease,” Narine says. His game plan was to not give Shah any room, and to bowl as close to the wicket as possible. It worked and Shah was stumped when he charged down against one that left him.Two days later Narine took a five-for against Kings XI Punjab at the same ground, including Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh in quick succession. Marsh, one of the best Twenty20 batsmen around, was bowled by a knuckle ball that came in through the gate.Narine’s favourite wicket of the season so far, though, has been that of Sachin Tendulkar – who was bowled by a sharp offbreak that cramped him for room as he tried to cut it.Hungry for the big game
Narine may have bowled only 81.5 overs in international cricket but he has left a mark there as well. As the Australians, the No. 1 ODI team in the world, found out recently, in particular Matthew Wade, who Narine got three times in 20 deliveries for just two runs in the series in the Caribbean.Narine’s stats

In the five-match ODI series against Australia, Narine had an economy rate of 3.32. Only three times has a bowler achieved a better economy rate in an ODI series against Australia since 2000.
In the 2011-12 first-class season, Narine took 33 wickets at 10.90. He was the leading wicket-taker for T&T, and only Nikita Miller had a marginally better average.
In List A matches, Narine was easily the leading wicket-taker among all teams in the 2011-12 season, taking 26 at 12.96 and an economy rate of 3.23. No other bowler took more than 11.
In the ODIs against Australia, Narine dismissed Matthew Wade three times in 20 balls conceding only two runs, average 0.66, run rate 0.6 per over.

Narine’s strength is his consistency, Pollard points out. “The way he analyses situations and batsmen, and if you watched his pitch map in the Australia series, the percentage in one area was very good.” Pollard thinks Narine is learning quickly to adapt, knowing that teams will work him out in international cricket over a period of time. “He will try to keep one step ahead and he will work hard as he is a humble human being.”Narine for his part says he is still learning to bowl under pressure. “Two things can happen: you can bowl good and get a better name for yourself. Or you can go there and get smashed and then you have to work on something. So I take it up as a challenge each time I go in to bowl to be consistent,” he says.Geoff Lawson, the former Australia fast bowler, who was in the West Indies as a television commentator for the series, thinks if Narine had played in the Test series, West Indies might have won it – if only because the pitches for the Tests had more bounce. “He does put a lot of work on his offspinner, which makes it effective – he doesn’t just roll it out, so batsmen have to be looking to play for significant deviation off the pitch,” Lawson says. The other thing about Narine that struck Lawson was that he bowls with a scrambled seam. “When you bowl both the offspinner and the topspinner and doosra with a scrambled seam, it is very difficult to pick the actual rotation. If the batsmen aren’t getting good visual clues out of the hand, then they are reduced to playing the ball off the pitch, which has obvious limitations in terms of time to play shots.”Narine says he is ready and “hungry” to play Test cricket, and reckons his time is nearing fast. “Hopefully I will be fully prepared and fully ready for it,” he says.He is 24 today. The biggest challenge ahead, he reckons, is to keep his feet on the ground. “I want to learn to adapt to not being successful – how to keep a mindset when things are not going well for me. In cricket there are less ups than downs, so I want to learn to bounce back from a bad over, a bad innings, bad match.”

Everton: Toffees summer signing is already a ‘proper Everton player’

Everton recorded easily their most comprehensive victory of the campaign thus far, as they brushed aside AFC Bournemouth to claim a richly-deserved and must-needed 3-0 Premier League win at Goodison Park.

Having failed to score more than one goal at home in nearly 12 months, it had felt like a result that was coming, given how dominant Sean Dyche's men had been in clashes with Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the term. However, such was their misfortune, few could have predicted when their luck would finally come in.

Massively aided by a visiting side devoid of any passion, cutting-edge or desire to challenge a beleaguered home side with well-documented struggles in Merseyside, it was a pretty perfect afternoon as they oversaw three different scorers and a clean sheet.

Whilst a near-impossible task to pin down a sole Player of the Match, although James Garner was the official recipient on Everton's official channels, there were too many standouts to laud.

dominic-calvert-lewin-everton-beto-jack-harrison-dyche-luton-bournemouth

Jarrad Branthwaite was resolute as always at the back, protecting Jordan Pickford who too starred in goal, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin put in yet another tireless display in which he did everything but score.

Things seem to finally be clicking into place for Dyche, who faces a true challenge after the international break: his first Merseyside Derby supported by home fans.

Who played well for Everton vs Bournemouth?

As aforementioned, it was a truly outstanding display from their number nine, who continued his road to full fitness by completing another admirable 83 minutes before being replaced by Beto.

As a willing runner sent into channels, he seemingly won everything in the air and even his own second balls at times.

However, it was actually Dwight McNeil who was lauded as their best player, earning an 8.6 Sofascore rating that surpassed Garner, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jack Harrison, all of whom found the net. That should come as little surprise given the former Burnley wide man was often the man creating, having amassed a whopping six key passes and creating two big chances, despite failing to register an assist.

The Cherries were consistently terrorised down his flank, seemingly too shell-shocked to even threaten the host's goal. Despite that, Pickford was still comfortable when called upon, making three routine saves, hitting 16 accurate long balls, and even registering a key pass too.

It would be hard to find fault with anyone on the pitch, but it could be argued that the show was instead stolen by the on-loan Leeds United dynamo, whose stunning strike added a much-needed cushion just before the break.

How did Jack Harrison play vs Bournemouth?

Earning just his second start for the Toffees since his summer move, it was a typically industrious display from the two-footed wide man, who offered a dash of attacking flair to partner his relentless work ethic.

Dyche would have been purring watching him chase down defenders and harass the opposition midfielders, with his 47 touches indicative of someone sufficiently involved.

With the ball, the 26-year-old would remain efficient, recording one key pass alongside his 80% pass accuracy, whilst also creating a big chance and even winning 100% of his two aerials, via Sofascore.

However, it was his goalscoring know-how that instead shone through, with his back-post header being miraculously blocked before Doucoure lashed in the rebound. Understandably snatching the headlines though was his actual goal, a side-footed volley from 25 yards out, meticulously placed over Neto that struck the underside of the bar and bounced over the line.

A truly beautiful strike, perfectly measured to bypass those in his way, it also marked an important effort to ensure there was additional protection to the scoreline, given how fragile the Toffees have been at times.

Journalist Connor O'Neill would even hand the £90k-per-week star an impressive 8/10 rating in his post-match analysis, writing: "Superb after a slow start. He took his goal really well and offered Everton a balance to their side that they haven't had this season. The fitter he gets, the better he will become."

It seems that fans are only seeing the start of what promises to be a fine deal achieved by Kevin Thelwell, who fought off late interest from Aston Villa to secure his signature.

Clearly, writer Ell Bretland is indebted to the Director of Football, who described Harrison as a perfect fit for the club: "Don’t know how to explain it other than Jack Harrison is a proper Everton player."

Why did Everton sign Harrison?

Many knew just how talented an individual they had acquired in the summer, with his progress into the first team hampered due to injury. However, the suspense his absence provided has only added to the excitement and made his instant impact feel even more earned.

Last season saw the speedster star for the relegated Whites, scoring an admirable five times and assisting a further seven in the league, to no avail. His work for a club in crisis gave credence to the suggestion that he might prove imperative for Everton, who too have been striving for safety with each passing year.

However, Harrison's US college coach Bobby Muuss would outline these attributes anyway, speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the deal had been announced: "The guy knows how to grind. He’s been grinding and taking the longer approach and the harder road than some others.

"If I’m an Evertonian right now, I’m excited to have a person with that mentality and character in my side for sure. Jack had attributes that some people just don’t have. With his work-rate, his ability to beat players and his savviness, he was just different."

These are attributes that Dyche will have certainly hoped to attain with his signing, with the rest of the team likely delighted with his progress already. The sky truly is the limit for the former Manchester City man, who seems like not just the perfect man for the club, but for the manager too.

Yesterday only helped to emphasise that further, with it being a notion only certain to be reinforced with each passing game.

Kohler-Cadmore, ignored in the Championship, begins his white-ball season with 164

If Jos Buttler can turn IPL brilliance into a Test place, perhaps Tom Kohler-Cadmore can make enough white-ball runs to make Yorkshire think again in the Championship

Kobbie Mainoo for England! Man Utd teenager's first call-up is fully deserved – he offers much more to Gareth Southgate's potential Euro 2024 line-up than Jordan Henderson

The 18-year-old has been rewarded by Gareth Southgate for his exceptional performances at Old Trafford and could yet make the difference in Germany

In the build-up to every international tournament, there is always a clamour for the flavour of the month to be called into the England squad. Think Michael Owen for the 1998 World Cup, Wayne Rooney for Euro 2004, Phil Foden for the rescheduled Euro 2020 and Jude Bellingham ahead of the last World Cup in Qatar.

Kobbie Mainoo has been the name on every England fans' lips ahead of Euro 2024 and there was noticeable disappointment among supporters when he was initially left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. But the England manager has had a dramatic change of heart and has called him into his penultimate squad before the tournament.

Mainoo has been impressing in practically every match he has played for United this season since breaking into the first team in November, and was one of the standout players in the Red Devils' incredible 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup. His England call-up is richly deserved and now it's time for him to sprinkle his magic on the biggest stage.

    Injury pain to indispensable

It is no exaggeration to say Mainoo has transformed United's fortunes since returning to action in November following a long spell out with an ankle injury suffered in pre-season. Mainoo was the player everyone had been talking about during United's tour of the United States after giving glimpses of his potential last season.

However, his progress was cruelly de-railed by a freak injury suffered against Real Madrid in Houston, when Casemiro tackled Rodrygo and the forward landed on Mainoo's foot in just the second minute. The midfielder left the NRG Stadium on crutches and did not even return to training until late October. And despite United spending more than £150m ($189m) on new signings, including Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund plus a raft of loan arrivals, they got off to a horrendous start, losing nine of their first 18 matches in all competitions.

Their abject midfield was a huge factor in their miserable results, with Casemiro looking off the pace, Sofyan Amrabat struggling to adapt to his new surroundings and Christian Eriksen not having the legs to last more than 45 minutes.

Fit-again Mainoo was, however, a surprise inclusion for a potentially tricky match at Everton in late November, and he was a revelation in his first-ever Premier League start. Indeed, he was so impressive that Gary Neville remarked he looked more like a Manchester City player than a United player.

    Growing in importance

Since returning to full fitness, Mainoo has been involved in 19 of United's last 22 matches, and there has been a significant improvement in results. Ten Hag's side have won 10 out of 16 games in which Mainoo has played more than 45 minutes, only losing to Newcastle, West Ham, Fulham and City while drawing with Tottenham and Liverpool.

He played no part in the humiliating 3-0 thrashing by Bournemouth and was taken off at half-time against Nottingham Forest, with it being little coincidence that United ended up losing 2-1. Mainoo has started every match since the turn of the year with the exception of the FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, helping United win eight out of 11 matches in all competitions.

He scored his first goal for the senior team with a thumping strike against Newport County and followed it up with an incredible run and curling finish against Wolves in the 97th minute, snatching back two valuable points. He dominated the midfield against West Ham three days later, forming part of an already iconic photograph with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

He helped United come through a tricky test against Aston Villa in what was a potentially make-or-break match for the club's top-four ambitions. It was his clever footwork in a tight space around the area which allowed Diogo Dalot to pick out Scott McTominay to head in the winning goal.

    Maturity amid chaos

He was exceptional again in a tricky encounter at Luton Town. With Casemiro and Harry Maguire getting tied up in knots while Bruno Fernandes played at 100mph, Mainoo held the fort practically by himself, offering control with his quick footwork and his intelligent passing, as well as cutting out the hosts' most dangerous balls.

He was a big factor in Erik ten Hag's side eventually scraping a 2-1 win, and former England striker Ian Wright was thoroughly impressed, leading calls for him to be called into the Three Lions' squad. "Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad," Wright wrote on . "Such maturity in chaotic conditions that we've not seen from a England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him."

Sunday's match with Liverpool was the game where everyone sat up and took notice, however. Mainoo was missing his usual partner Casemiro, but if anything he looked more confident without the Brazilian by his side and took more responsibility in attack, gliding past opponents with ease while skilfully controlling the ball under huge pressure.

    Henderson's career has gone backwards

Mainoo's effervescent form is in total contrast to the players he is competing with for a place in the England team. Jordan Henderson' career has nosedived ever since his ill-advised move to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, which attracted huge criticism back home given his previous support for the LGBTQ+ movement. The transfer was also a disaster on an individual level, as Al-Ettifaq won just six out of their 19 games with Henderson.

The former Liverpool captain sought an early exit to join Ajax, and his arrival has coincided with a downturn in the Dutch giants' results. Ajax had won seven out of nine games in December and January, but since the former Liverpool captain joined, they have won just one out of the nine matches in which he has played.

Henderson has an extra 15 years experience than Mainoo, but on current form, the United teenager has the edge.

West Ham could land Antonio upgrade in £40m gem who’s "very Ian Wright-like"

West Ham United continue to defy expectations following their stunning 2-0 win over Arsenal in midweek – their second over the Gunners this season – and confidence must be flowing at the London Stadium.

David Moyes won't be resting on his laurels and with the January transfer window just days away from opening, the Scot could be keen on bolstering his squad further.

West Ham United transfer news

Jarrod Bowen led the line for the Irons against Arsenal, and it is clear that Moyes needs to strengthen his attacking department.

According to Football Insider, West Ham are keen on signing Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, with the North Londoners valuing the player at around £40m.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

They could face competition from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth for the Englishman and with Mikel Arteta looking to potentially offload the forward if the right deal comes in, Moyes could strike in the next few weeks.

Having sold Gianluca Scamacca in the summer, the club currently have only Michail Antonio and Danny Ings as their two main strikers, with youngster Divin Mubama providing backup.

It is clear that a new centre-forward is urgently required, especially if Moyes looks to lead his side to even more glory this term.

Michail Antonio

Nketiah may not be a marquee name as such, but he could be a big upgrade on Antonio, without a shadow of a doubt.

Eddie Nketiah’s season in numbers

Antonio has been a wonderful servant to West Ham since arriving, yet this season, he has only scored twice in the league.

With just a few months remaining on his deal, Moyes should be ready to part ways with the striker and this should give him a licence to bring in Nketiah.

Former professional Tony Cascarino hailed the 24-year-old recently, claiming the striker was “very Ian Wright-like” as he is a "natural goalscorer", and he has demonstrated his goalscoring abilities this season.

He has scored five league goals this season along with chipping in with three assists, and he could certainly add something different to the West Ham attack.

This season, Nketiah has registered more shots per 90 (3.08 vs one), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.56 vs 1.99) and goal-creating actions (0.72 vs 0.55) than Antonio during the league this season and it proves that he would be an upgrade on the West Ham striker.

With regard to the Arsenal squad, the 24-year-old currently ranks third in terms of goals and assists (six) in the Premier League, along with ranking fifth for total shots per game (1.7) and he has proven top-flight ability.

Indeed, since making his debut for the Gunners during the 2017/18 campaign, Nketiah has played over 150 times, scoring 38 goals and chipping in with nine assists in the process.

Arteta transfer "priority" as Arsenal prepare to sell "top-level" player

The Spaniard is thoroughly preparing for January.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 23, 2023

Perhaps it is time he moved on to a fresh challenge in order to establish himself as the main striker and a move to West Ham – for whom Wright briefly featured for after leaving Highbury in 1998, scoring nine goals in 24 games – could be ideal.

He would be a perfect replacement for Antonio and, given his pedigree in the Premier League over the previous few seasons, Moyes could be signing a player who should be able to settle in with ease.
