West Ham planned to sign £35m star before deadline-busting Aston Villa move

West Ham United were planning to sign an “outrageous” player, before he ended up signing for Aston Villa in a deadline-busting move.

West Ham miss out on "outrageous" star to Aston Villa

Ultimately, West Ham did what they needed to do on deadline day, bringing in Igor Julio on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion to provide cover in defence, but there are question marks over whether it was a successful window on the whole.

Former player Dean Ashton has been left unconvinced by the recruitment team’s summer transfer strategy, saying: “The recruitment’s been so shoddy, especially when you change managers and style of football.

“You have to be so aligned at board level to make sure that recruitment is absolutely spot-on for the manager that you’ve got in place.”

Things picked up in the latter stages of the window, bringing in 21-year-old midfielder Soungouto Magassa from AS Monaco, while Mateus Fernandes also arrived from Southampton.

However, there are arguably some doubts over the signing of Fernandes, given that the attacking midfielder is yet to really prove himself at Premier League level, having been part of the Southampton side that picked up just 12 points last season.

Instead, West Ham may have been better off signing a more established Premier League midfielder, and that is exactly what they tried to do, having planned to push for the signing of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott in August.

However, Elliott ultimately ended up completing a deadline-busting move to Aston Villa, with the 22-year-old joining on a loan deal for the remainder of the season, which includes an obligation to buy for £35m.

"Outstanding" manager is "leading" West Ham candidate to replace Potter

The Hammers have set their sights on a Graham Potter replacement.

Elliott could have been "outrageous" signing for West Ham

It is perhaps unsurprising the Hammers missed out on the England U21 international, given that the option to join a club competing in the Europa League was on the table, but it is still disappointing they were unable to get a deal done.

The former Fulham man has been lauded as “outrageous” by scout Jacek Kulig in the past, and he is much more established than Fernandes at the top level, most notably scoring a late winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season.

That’s not to say Fernandes isn’t a strong addition to Potter’s squad, however, with the Portuguese youngster impressing after being thrown straight in on the left-wing against Nottingham Forest last time out.

The starlet won six duels, the joint-second highest number of any West Ham player on the pitch, while he has also received high praise for his attitude from former Saints man Jo Tessem in the past, who said: “Every week he plays his heart out, he is by far the best player on the football pitch from a Saints perspective.”

Man Utd now swoop and move for "relentless" £25m+ star to replace Casemiro

Manchester United have now swooped in and made a move to sign a “relentless” £25 million star to replace Casemiro, according to a recent report.

Alejandro Garnacho turns down Al-Nassr move

Not only are the Red Devils looking to bring in new players for Ruben Amorim this summer, but they are also looking to offload several first-team players they believe are not good enough and don’t fit into the plans of the United boss.

Better than Kudus: Man Utd confident they will sign "unplayable" £60m+ star

Manchester United believe that they will sign this Premier League star who is even better than Mohammed Kudus.

Alejandro Garnacho is one player that the Red Devils want to see leave this summer, and the Argentine has been offered the chance to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. However, according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Garnacho has turned down the move to Al-Nassr, as he wants to remain in Europe. The Saudi side held initial discussions with the attacker, as they look to be title contenders in their own league this season.

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho

As well as looking to move Garnacho on, United are also looking to sell Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Tyrell Malacia and are said to be open to offers for Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana. While Garnacho turns down a possible transfer, it looks as though Sancho could be one step closer to leaving Old Trafford.

That is because, according to a recent report from Italy, United have accepted a £20m+ bid from Juventus for Sancho. Furthermore, the England international has accepted a contract offer from the Italian side which is worth more than £5 million a season.

Man Utd swoop in to sign "relentless" £25m+ star to replace Casemiro

Allowing players such as Garnacho and Sancho to leave means the Red Devils can enter the transfer market to strengthen their side in key positions, and they appear keen on signing a new midfielder. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by The People’s Person, Man United have made an approach to sign Richard Rios from Palmeiras.

Richard Rios at the Club World Cup for Palmeiras against Porto.

The report states that AS Roma are very keen on signing the young midfielder and have reportedly held talks with Palmeiras and have made an offer worth €25 million, but the Brazilian side will not sell the player for anything less than €30 million, which is roughly £25 million. Their pursuit has now been affected, as United are said to have “swooped in on the player in the last few hours” with an approach of their own.

Those at Old Trafford see Rios as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is unlikely to play such a key role in Amorim’s team in the 2025/26 campaign after some ‘incosistent performances’. The Brazilian was a key performer in United’s run to the Europa League final, but he isn’t getting any younger, and Amorim is ready to find a younger replacement.

Rios, who has been dubbed “relentless” for his work rate, joined Palmeries in 2023 and has made over 130 appearances for the club. Tottenham think midfielder is a star in the making as Levy now readies move

Tottenham Hotspur recruitment chiefs think one club's mainstay midfielder is a potential star in the making, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy now seemingly readying a move.

Spurs closing in on early January deals

Following the widely reported capture of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner on a six-month loan deal, it is now believed that Tottenham are close to signing Genoa star Radu Dragusin as well.

The north Londoners are currently chasing Champions League qualification after a stellar first season overall for manager Ange Postecoglou, who has quickly endeared himself to the hearts of Spurs supporters.

The Australian's brand of intense, attack-minded football is easy on the eye, with Tottenham sealing some impressive results this season despite a plethora of injury and suspension problems.

Postecoglou has been left very short defensively in particular. First-choice centre-back pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been unavailable for long periods since early November, exposing Spurs' real lack of depth in defence and prompting them to open talks for Dragusin this month.

Spurs' head coach will be eager to get the Romanian to N17 as soon as possible, but it's also believed that Levy and sporting director Johan Lange would like to bring in a centre-midfielder as well.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher if they can offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before January 31, alongside the likes of Royal Antwerp ace Arthur Vermeeren. Now, it is believed the north Londoners have their eyes on Blackburn Rovers star Adam Wharton as well.

Tottenham "readying a move" for Wharton

The 19-year-old, who has been a mainstay in Blackburn's midfield this season, starting 20 games and playing 24 overall, is seen as a potential "star in the making" by Spurs.

That is according to Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, who also claim Tottenham are "readying a move" to sign Wharton after scouting him extensively this season.

While it is believed a transfer is unlikely to happen in January, the Lilywhites are apparently stepping up their interest in the Englishman ahead of a possible 2024 swoop.

The teenage sensation, who can play across the midfield, currently ranks as one of Rovers' best-performing players by average match rating according to WhoScored.

“I saw Adam’s quality on the ball immediately when I arrived here," said Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson to Rovers TV.

“I’ve been pushing him every day, he’s a young boy who wants to learn and he has a big future. I’m on him every day, he has to demand more from himself as well.

“He’s a great player but there’s still a lot to learn off the ball. The important thing with Adam is that he’s willing to learn. He’s done a great job, he’s a positive boy and he’s already developed a lot and he has the mentality to become better every day."

Club now "braced" for Spurs bid to sign defender who Harry Redknapp loves

One club are reportedly anticipating a Tottenham move for their "quality" centre-half, who former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a big fan of.

Van de Ven suffers hamstring injury

Spurs' early-season unbeaten run had to come to an end eventually, with Ange Postecoglou watching on from the sidelines as his team succumbed to a 4-1 defeat on Monday.

Tottenham performed admirably in the circumstances, boldly sticking to their high line despite a two-man disadvantage in the second half. You could make a case that the scoreline flattered Mauricio Pochettino's side, who often struggled to get past Spurs thanks in part to the exceptional performance of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The result was a slight dampener on what has been a truly incredible start to Postecoglou's tenure at N17. Indeed, the far more worrying aspect of this defeat is the sheer number of absentees for Spurs over the next few matches.

Both Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero are suspended after their red cards against Chelsea, while James Maddison and Micky van de Ven were forced off through injury. The latter is awaiting results on what looks to be a very serious problem, with van de Ven being carried off the pitch clutching his hamstring.

Reports have suggested that the Dutch defender could be facing months rather than weeks on the treatment table, resulting in Spurs looking at the January transfer market for solutions.

Bournemouth anticipating Spurs move for Kelly

Indeed, it is rumoured that Tottenham have their eye on Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah, while other media sources claim Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo is a target for Spurs too. Another centre-half to be heavily linked with a move to north London is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

The Cherries captain was subject to apparent summer interest and even a deadline day bid from Postecoglou's side, but a late move didn't come to fruition.

Now, The Evening Standard back reports that Kelly is expected to be a Spurs target yet again, coming amid van de Ven's serious injury blow. They add that Bournemouth are "braced" for a move by Tottenham as we slowly approach the winter window.

Harry Redknapp and Scott Parker praise Kelly

The Englishman has been a key player at the Vitality Stadium in recent years, leading to praise from both Scott Parker and Harry Redknapp.

"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half. And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really," said Parker on Kelly to Bournemouth's official website.

Redknapp, speaking to Bet Victor about the 25-year-old, called Kelly a "real talent" while naming him in a September team of the week after his performance against Chelsea (via Bournemouth Echo).

“I thought he put in an absolutely immense performance against Chelsea and showed why he’d been linked previously with a move away from the club," said Redknapp on Kelly.

“For me he is key for the Cherries moving forward. He’s a real talent that puts his heart and soul into it for the full game and he was one of the key reasons why Bournemouth came away with a deserved point in a hard fought 0-0."

Newcastle transfer news: Update on pursuit of £56m "machine"

Newcastle United are looking at a January deal for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, and a fresh report has revealed that the club would be willing to complete a player-plus-cash exchange.

What did Napoli say about Victor Osimhen?

In recent days, Napoli created a video on the social media platform TikTok appearing to mock the 24-year-old after missing a penalty, which has caused the relationship between both parties to spiral, with the player’s representative, Roberto Calenda, even threatening to take legal action, as per BBC Sport.

Whilst Nigeria’s international still has two years remaining on his contract, he could be tempted to look elsewhere in the new year following the fallout, and having established himself as Rudi Garcia’s overall top-performing offensive player so far this season, he won’t be short of potential suitors.

In the Premier League, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are the three primary clubs to have been credited with an interest in the attacker, but over the summer, Eddie Howe’s side also took a big step by enquiring about a move.

Back in June, Lille’s former star was the subject of an approach from the Magpies, who reportedly made contact with his agent, and whilst a deal failed to come to fruition at the time, chiefs are looking to take a second bite of the cherry at the start of 2024.

Are Newcastle signing Victor Osimhen?

According to Sport Italia (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are set to “immediately target” Osimhen in the upcoming transfer window in January, and they are supposedly plotting a “crazy exchange”.

PIF are hoping to bring the centre-forward to the northeast for €65m (£56m) and are apparently happy to send Alexander Isak the other way in a straight swap deal. Napoli aren’t actively looking to sell their prized asset, but a “super” proposal like this could force their president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, to “waver”.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

How many goals has Victor Osimhen scored?

Since the start of his career, Osimhen has posted an impressive 126 contributions (101 goals and 25 assists) in 198 appearances which has seen him dubbed a goal-scoring “machine” by journalist Josh Bunting, so it would be a massive coup if he was to sign for Newcastle.

The Lagos native has also recorded 26 shots so far this season which is more than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, highlighting his constant desire to try and hit the back of the net even if the end product isn’t always there (all information correct prior to today's game vs Lecce).

Furthermore, Howe’s target is a versatile operator having previously played in all four positions across the frontline, including out wide on both the left and right wings and as a second striker alongside his usual role when leading the line through the middle, so he would be able to easily adapt to the manager’s demands.

However, while Osimhen knows what it takes to be successful at the highest level having not only won last season's top goalscorer accolade in the Serie A but also being named the division’s Best Young Player for 2022, we can't imagine fans on Tyneside would be happy to see Isak head out the door at this time regardless of the player stepping into his place.

Pujara, detached from IPL, muses upon the art of the leave

As the glitter and cacophony of the IPL engulfs India, Cheteshwar Pujara is in Yorkshire hoping to return the former champions to title contention

Melinda Farrell11-Apr-2018As the glitter and cacophony of the IPL engulfs India, with maximums and power hitting among the most prized batting traits, Cheteshwar Pujara is happily discussing the value of the leave in Leeds. While it is common for the County Championship to see visiting Test players use the competition as a valuable acclimatisation period before a Test series, Pujara maintains he would have played in England even if India were not touring later this summer. It is, after all, his fourth stint in the Championship and his second for Yorkshire. At Headingley they hope his return is an omen: when he was here in 2015 the title followed.Yorkshire are seeking a refocus in their approach to batting this season, with an emphasis on consolidation before attack. They could hardly have found a better exponent of this than Pujara. Generally a cautious starter, he is notoriously difficult to pry from the crease, as evidenced by his 14 Test and 44 first-class centuries.”They have spoken to me about that,” Pujara told ESPNcricinfo. “The guys played too many shots in the last couple of seasons. They’ve learned from their mistakes and obviously they will try to change the way they play a little bit but at the same time one has to know their strengths and weaknesses so you still need to play according to your strength.”It is always important to spend a lot of time at the crease, have a lot of patience when the ball is doing a lot understand the situation where you need to be a little defensive and know your time to attack because you will always have a time when the ball doesn’t do much and that is where you can capitalise.”Not everyone appreciates Pujara’s discipline and control. His trademark slow starts and a Test strike rate of 47.45 frustrate those fans who have grown impatient on a white ball diet and its effect on the longer formats. When Pujara scored a majestic double-century against Australia in the third Test in Ranchi, which ended in a draw, some critics pointed to the time it took – 525 balls – for him to make 202 as a major impediment to India winning the match. He feels fans in England have a greater appreciation of his skills and temperament.Cheteshwar Pujara works the ball to the leg side•BCCI

“Sometimes I do feel that when I start leaving the ball people really don’t appreciate that because of shorter formats of the game, ” said Pujara. “But when I come here they understand what my role is.”In the India team they do understand but I’m talking about the fans’ perspective where they want to see fours and sixes. So when I come here fans they do understand the game, they do appreciate if you’re leaving the ball, if the bowler is bowling well, if the conditions are challenging, they understand that you need to survive that. Then obviously, once I’m set, I always start scoring runs.”

Wagner returns for Essex in 2018

Essex have secured a return for Neil Wagner, the New Zealand left-armer who played a key role in their 2017 Championship title

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2018Essex have secured a return for Neil Wagner, the New Zealand left-armer who played a key role in their 2017 Championship title. Wagner has signed for an initial spell from May until July, with the possibility of it being extended depending on his international commitments.Although Wagner’s 31 wickets came at 35.32 last season, he sent down more than 300 overs – behind only Simon Harmer and Jamie Porter – and added experience to a youthful seam attack. His aggressive style complimented the nagging lines provided by Porter, and his best figures of 6 for 48, at Taunton in April, helped set up Essex’s first win in what was to become a memorable season.Currently ranked the No. 7 Test bowler in the world, Wagner will take over from Peter Siddle as Essex’s overseas player in May, after a five-match Championship stint for the Australian. Wagner is set to play in all formats until the end of July.”Once I knew there was an opportunity to come back to Essex, I was very keen to get back to Chelmsford and build on the hard work and success of last season,” Wagner said.”Everyone at the club made me feel welcome last year, from the members to the commercial team, and I absolutely loved my time there. The squad and coaching staff were brilliant with me and I am looking forward to catching up with the friends I made and bringing more success to such a special club.”Wagner was Essex’s main overseas signing in 2017, joining for a second stint later in the season after Mohammad Amir returned to Pakistan. As well as helping Essex to their first Championship in 25 years, he claimed 14 wickets in the Royal London Cup before their semi-final exit. The 31-year-old has also played county cricket previously for Lancashire and Northamptonshire. He claimed his best Test figures of 7 for 39 against West Indies in December and should play a key role in New Zealand’s two-Test series against England starting next month. New Zealand are then due to have a six-month gap before touring the UAE to play Pakistan in October.Anthony McGrath, Essex’s head coach, said: “We have been working hard on bringing Neil back for a while. His performances were excellent last season and he offers something to the squad with both bat and ball.”Off the field he was very much a popular member of the squad and he brings international experience to our exciting group of young bowlers. He showed great commitment to the club last year and was integral to what we achieved. From the minute he joined he understood exactly what Essex is all about, and we are looking forward to welcoming him back this year.”

Sohail Tanvir fined 15% of match fee after middle-finger gesture

The Guyana Amazon Warriors pacer had sent off Australian Ben Cutting by giving him the middle finger with both hands after dismissing him during their clash against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
